Newsletter Message from the headteacher Since the students returned to school in September I’ve visited around 58 lessons. There are all sorts of reasons for my doing this, but the biggest one is because I like seeing students learn and it reminds me of what the point of this organisation is. This is why I insist on having a teaching load when most secondary headteachers and principals don’t. I’m trying not to get distracted by the budgets, contracts, politics, Ofsted, league tables, marketing etc and instead focus on how we are helping children to learn.

One of the lessons I teach is year 8 PSHE (personal, social and health education) also known as ‘Learn to Learn’ or ‘L2L’. We have reviewed our curriculum for this area this year and it’s quite entertaining to deliver. This week’s lesson got pretty animated as I tried to chair a discussion on ‘parents and teenagers: resolving conflicts’.

We were exploring what generally ‘triggers’ parents/carers and what ‘triggers’ teenagers. One student on the front row thought carefully about this and eventually decided that his dad was at his most annoying when he ‘spoke’. I couldn’t help but think that my own teenager would say pretty much the same thing about me. Adding to this, a female student agreed that parents ‘speaking’ was annoying but, she conceded, largely unavoidable.

What she did however object to in the strongest terms was parents ‘singing’ or ‘dancing’. This chimed with my own experience as my son has formerly pointed out that my singing, especially in the car, is ‘more or less unbearable’. Obviously it was a good natured conversation, albeit a little one sided on the teenager point of view.

In other people’s lessons I saw some great examples of ‘strong starts’ which we are trying to develop further as a staff team. A strong start is a lesson opener which gets students straight into the learning from minute one. Teachers do this in a variety of ways depending on the subject. One lesson I saw in geography (below) featured a slide on the board as students enter which aims to invoke students into a discussion as they are getting themselves sorted at their tables.

I am also seeing really smart use of seating strategies; this is the art of seating students where they are most likely to learn well. We have invested in a nifty piece of software for this which is helping teachers do this bit of admin quickly and efficiently.

Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Higher Apprenticeship evening (post 18 opportunities) Tuesday 24 September 2019 from 7-8.30pm at Lumsdale We are inviting parents/carers and students in the sixth form who are considering applying for an apprenticeship at the end of year 13 to attend an apprenticeship information evening on Tuesday 24 September.

We will be exploring both higher and degree apprenticeships with our guest speakers from Sheffield Hallam University and AECOM. The evening aims to broadly outline what apprenticeships are on offer in terms of industry sectors, how to apply and understanding the recruitment process. We will be giving parents/carers and students the opportunity to look at online platforms and speak to the representatives as part of the evening.

We would appreciate knowing numbers of attendees in advance for IT booking - if you are interested in attending please email confirmation to Mrs Bumby pbumby@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk

Careers interviews During year 11 all students will have at least one individual careers interview with the careers advisor currently employed by "Ideas 4 Careers". Students are encouraged to discuss their current ideas and are informed about the various post 16 options available. Following on from the interview they will receive a careers plan. There will be additional careers guidance during form time, assemblies and enrichment activities.

We would like to give parents/carers the opportunity of attending the careers interview with your son/daughter. Phil Nelson, the careers advisor is in school on a Monday and Tuesday during school hours. If you would be interested in this offer, please can you email Phil Nelson on pnelson@highfields.derbyshire.sch.uk to arrange a convenient appointment.

The careers service is also available to year 12 and year 13 students to discuss post 18 options.

Careers evening – 14 November 2019 We are delighted to invite you to attend our careers evening at Highfields upper school site on Thursday 14 November 2019 from 6pm to 8pm.

The evening will be attended by further education colleges, higher education institutions, training providers and local business. This will be in the form of information stands giving you the opportunity to talk to a number of professionals and representatives from a range of organisations.

This promises to be a great evening and a fantastic opportunity to find out more first-hand what is available post-16 whether it is apprenticeships, traineeships, further education or higher education courses.

Newsletter School news Highfields year 6 open event success It was a pleasure to see so many parents/carers and year 6 students attending our open afternoon, joining tours around both our school sites during the working day, and at our open evening. Parents/carers and students were able to talk to staff and students, take part in activities and hear more about what Highfields can offer.

Feedback from the event has been excellent with a number of parents/carers commenting they came away with from an enjoyable and informative evening with a real insight into who Highfields are and what we do.

The deadline for submission of secondary school applications is 31 October and we hope our open events enabled parents/carers to make an informed decision regarding progression to secondary school. However, if any parent/carer did not get the opportunity to attend or would like a further information about Highfields or to arrange a visit, please contact our lower site at Starkholmes on 01629 584020 and we will be happy to organise this for you.

Our website also has a wealth of information available and provides an excellent flavour of our school. If you do choose Highfields School for your child, there will be further opportunities for them to visit us and spend time at lower site next summer.

World’s Biggest Coffee Morning The World’s biggest coffee morning is on Friday 27 September and students at lower school are raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Starkholmes students will be joining in with this during break time on Friday by selling hot chocolate and cakes.

We are asking for any support you can offer by sending in cakes for students to sell and reminding students to bring in money on Friday if they wish to purchase drinks and cakes.

It was an amazing success last year with students in years 7 and 8 raising over £500 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Please help support us this year by sending in cakes to see if we can beat this amount for this worthwhile cause.

Careers inspiration and advice from BBC Bitesize Explore BBC Bitesize’s brand new collection of free, online careers resources offering a wealth of inspiration and advice for students.

This new resources offer a rich collection of case studies across a wide range of sectors, linking curriculum subjects and the world of work: Explore BBC Bitesize Careers resources

Online careers programme for 11-18 year olds START is an online careers programme designed to connect 11-18 year olds with their future career potential.

The programme is broken down into sections on ‘world of work’ with a job search according to subject, skill or interest; ‘what to study’ about pathways and qualifications; ‘where to learn’ which views all colleges, universities, sixth forms, training providers and UTC; and ‘employability’ which has sections on work experience, work preparation including CV writing, covering letters and interview preparation. There is also the facility for students to upload their personal statement and CV, so they can start to build their own careers profile.

Girls Go Gold Event Last Friday (13 September) 12 girls were invited to attend the Girls Go Gold event at the EIS in Sheffield.

As a premium member school of Youth Sport Trust, Highfields has the privilege of being invited to the Girls Go Gold event last Friday (13 September) at EIS, Sheffield - what a fantastic experience!

The event was being held by the Girls’ Schools Association and our 12 girls in years 9-11 were working alongside students from private schools. The opening address was given by Dame Catherine Grainger, Olympic champion rower, who inspired the girls to try new sports, make the most of all opportunities, persevere and help and support one another.

Our students then were able to take part in a sports technology and engineering session led by Sheffield Hallam lecturers. They were tasked with designing some new technology for next year’s Olympic games for the seven new sports which will be seen in Tokyo and presented their designs to the group. After lunch they went onto an ice skating session which they really found fun. For the final session six girls joined a boxing master class and six took part in an athletics masterclass of high jump, shot putt, hurdle and long jump.

Newsletter The closing address was given by world champion in line skater Jenna Downing, Olympic bob sleigh Donna Minichello and Olympic badminton player Louise Wallwork.

There were three overall student prizes awarded for the day and it was brilliant to hear our own year 11 student, Layla given an award for teamwork – well done Layla! The girls came away buzzing with what they had taken part in and been inspired to do.

Newsletter Primary School Sports Evenings On Wednesday 18 September the first of our autumn term primary sports evenings took place led by our year 9 and 10 sports leaders along with Mr Molyneux, Mr Edenbrow, Mrs Turner and Mrs Allen. 44 students took part from All Saints and South Darley primaries.

Higher Sports Leaders news Our year 12 level 3 higher sports leaders were trained in first aid today (Friday 20 September) – see next week’s newsletter for more details.

Youth Sport Trust News 2019-20 Highfields have again achieved Premium School Status with the Youth Sport Trust and we have once again been successful in our applications for various projects for 2019/2020:  Health and wellbeing hub school – we are looking at working on an ‘active in mind’ project  Combat sport hub school – we have already started sessions in wrestling and fencing with year 11 students and judo with years 7 and 8  ‘Healthy lifestyle champions’ project  ‘Girls active’ project  ‘My personal best’ – PE sessions are look at ‘physical me’, ‘social me’ and ‘mental me’

Level 5 primary schools sports and physical activity specialism Congratulations to Mr Molyneux who received his level 5 award. He followed this course during the academic year 2018-19 and completed his placements in Elton and Monyash primary schools. We are very proud of his achievements as the first learner through this course in our first year of delivery.

Newsletter Highfields School Uniform Code A strict uniform code for years 7 to 11 is implemented at Highfields School. Our school uniform is easy to source and practical, it helps to promote a community identity, encourages pride in appearance, makes life fair for all students when the same rules apply and reflects the high standards and expectations we have at Highfields School. Staff perform a variety of uniform checks and we ask that parents/carers support our uniform code. The uniform code below is designed to be clear.

Parents/carers are encouraged to check with the school on 01629 581888 where they are unsure.

Shoes should be black and polishable with no logos Plain black socks with trousers Plain black tights with skirts During snow and ice, students should wear footwear appropriate to the conditions.

No shoes with heels, logos/other colours/flashes appearing on the design, trainers, boots, ankle boots, canvas/fabric/suede shoes, slipon ballet shoes, flip flops, sandals or fashion shoes

No fitted blouses or plain white polo shirts without school logo

Official black school jumpers with the school logo (stocked only by Kick Off Sport or Trutex) should be worn

No hoodies, jumpers or cardigans from another source with a sewn on logo The Highfields royal blue PE hoodie should only be worn during PE lessons and not around school



Plain black formal shoe-length tailored trousers (for boys and girls) or Plain black formal knee length skirt



No tight skirts, short skirts, fashion skirts, fashion trousers, skinny jeans, skinny trousers, low slung trousers, jeggings, tracksuit bottoms, chinos, combats, cords, leggings or denim of any colour, no detail on skirts or trousers such as zips, metal studs or buckles.

A single sleeper/stud in each ear and a watch



No rings, pendants, necklaces, non-school badges, festival wrist bands, ordinary wrist bands, charity wrist bands (unless sanctioned by school), facial jewellery or other body jewellery (eg nose studs, belly button piercings), tattoos (tattoos are not legally allowed until 18 years of age)



Warm weather resistant winter coat suitable for outdoor use



No leather jackets, denim jackets, hoodies (including plain black hoodies) or plain black cardigans. These items are not waterproof and will not be accepted as outdoor wear. School jumpers should be worn for warmth

Outdoor wear must be removed upon entry to the school building and stored in lockers Outdoor wear must not be worn in classrooms or during lessons

Hairstyles:

Hair should be of natural colour and not extreme in terms of style or cut Plain hair bands can be worn - no flowers or bows

Belts:

Plain black belts (without studs) can be worn to hold up trousers and not for decoration

Scarves:

Scarves should never be worn in classrooms or during lessons

Make-up:

Heavy make-up is not acceptable in school (no mascara, blusher, eye shadow, eye liner, lipstick or fake tan) No nail varnish, false nails or nail extensions are allowed Students will be issued with appropriate ‘wipes’ in order to remove heavy make-up or nail varnish

Bags:

Bags should be of a suitable size to accommodate A4 sized books, folders and other equipment

Equipment:

All students are expected to have pens, pencil, ruler, rubber, calculator and any subject specific equipment every day

Please note: Many department stores also stock the items we list as non-logo wear. Please be cautious when purchasing uniform from retailers, as many advertise and sell fashion trousers/skirts as school uniform, but not all would comply with Highfields uniform code.

If you require advice before making a purchase, please contact school.

Where a term is disputed (e.g. ‘skinny’ or ‘short’) a senior leader will decide whether or not clothing reflects uniform code.

Newsletter Highfields School Contact details Communication with school General enquiries The first point of contact for parents/carers for general enquiries is reception. Reception staff will ask you what the issue is in order for them to help with queries or refer you to a member of staff who can. Please be understanding with your expectations as, unless your call is urgent or considered a safeguarding matter, the majority of staff will not be able to respond to you immediately due to their teaching commitments and a return call may not be until the end of the school day or following day depending on the situation.

Pastoral enquiries & sickness absence If you have any concerns about a student, please contact the form tutor in the first instance either by email or telephone. If you feel enquiries have not been adequately addressed by the form tutor or year manager, this can be followed-up with the relevant head of year.

Newsletter School to home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only.

Our aim is that only students’ data sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request.
