A letter from our Executive Director I grew up on a 25-acre cherry farm in Eastern Oregon, selling cherries on the side of the road three weeks of the year in addition to planting trees, moving rocks, picking up wood from pruned trees and moving irrigation for hours in ankle deep mud. This lived experience taught me the value of hard work and resilience. Farming is not easy when a hailstorm in July can take out your cherry crop, or when pests can damage half the orchard.

What we experienced in the last year, at an individual and community level, was like watching a storm roll through in July; will it pass by or will it ruin my crop? What inspires me and gives me hope in these moments of uncertainty is the will of our farmers, ranchers, chefs and business owners to keep going as best they can.

As an organization, HDFFA believes that everyone deserves good food and that our food connects us to each other. We know that 39,000 Central Oregonians face food insecurity every day. We also know that access to fresh healthy and local foods is essential for everyone, and in the face of adversity we do our best to support our food community - from farm to plate.

Our work wouldn’t get far without strong support from the communities that we serve. Here are a few of the ways that we have expanded collaborations and partnerships to better reach Central Oregon communities in 2021!

• Collaboration with Central Oregon Veteran’s Ranch (COVR) We are dedicating 5% of our USDA Beginning Farmer and Rancher funding to assist COVR’s work with therapy-based livestock programs for U.S. Veterans - that’s $14,000 and three years of collaboration!

• Food Sovereignty in Warm Springs We are excited to collaborate with the Warm Springs Community

Action Team as they assess Food Sovereignty in their community (see p.14-15) • Expanded VeggieRx programming HDFFA is working with the local Community Based Outpatient

Clinic to reach additional U.S. Veterans, connecting them to locally grown foods and nutrition education.

RESILIENCY FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES

Shelley and Jeff Akers of Bohemian Roastery: “When we began our wood-fire coffee business journey in 2017, little did we know what the future would store for us! We built a custom roaster and a sweet coffee shop in a new mobile trailer with a deck on the back. When the pandemic hit, we pivoted our business model to exclusively roasting and selling beans directly to our customers and markets around town. Thanks to our loyal, local community, the farmers markets were a godsend in 2020!

Making the drastic decision to change our plans for our business truly saved us. We are so thankful for our strong customer base, and look forward to continuing to wood-fire roast small coffee batches long into the future.”

Kristin Bergh of Compassion Kombucha: “When the initial blow of COVID hit, 25 generous supporters helped us ride the wave by signing up for essentially a kombucha CSA. By paying upfront, we were able to pay the bills and had fun delivering growlers to doorsteps each week! Once we were able to get our feet back under us, we knew we needed to pivot and took the leap of purchasing a bottling line to finally launch our product into 16oz bottles in the fall.”

Randi Holm of Holm Made Toffee Co., LLC: “2020 brought a ‘back to basics’ approach and A LOT of change to survive: • Downsized kitchens to maximize rent/square footage • Increased visibility on social media, including a campaign featuring fellow small-businesses • Launched a new website focused on D2C • Created a safe curbside option for locals • Curated gift sets featuring other local businesses’ products • Renewed focus on community and fundraising Our tagline “Happiness, Plain and Simple” seems to be filled with more meaning than ever intended the past 12 months!”

Over the past year, they fought hard to serve customers, support their families, and nourish our community. - HDFFA Sarah Frost-McKee of Super Belly Ferments: “Aside from farmer’s markets, our fermented foods business relies almost entirely on wholesale and grocery sales. Last year, most of the accounts that we had planned to roll out paused on bringing in new products, so our projections for growth in 2020 were not met. We instead focused on selling direct via our website, which has been a success. We now cold ship our products nationwide, allowing us to reach a much greater customer base. In addition, we spent the better part of the year working to strengthen the relationships we have in the regional food system. The Local Food Trust is partnering with us to connect philanthropy and food systems.

HDFFA PROGRAM GROW & GIVE

Grow & Give is a fresh food donation program providing donated fresh produce to NeighborImpact food bank.

May - October, HDFFA and volunteers collect produce from farmers, farmer’s market patrons and gardeners for distribution through NeighborImpact food bank. We host booths at regional farmers markets where YOU can donate money or food, and gardeners or farmers can donate excess fruits or vegetables. The majority of the produce is collected in the fall when we coordinate our Harvest Team volunteers to collect excess produce from farmers’ fields.

“HDFFA facilitates donations from local farmers who have generously supported our food bank and partner agencies with seasonal fruit and vegetables that we don’t often receive through regular donation channels. We are very grateful to be able to offer a wider variety of healthy foods through these donations.”

Annually donate 15,000 lbs to NeighborImpact Food Bank 2020 donations provided the equivalent of 9,000 meals for Central Oregonians Since 2014, we’ve collected 73,176 lbs. of fresh, local produce - enough food for 60,000 meals!

HDFFA PROGRAM VEGGIERx

VeggieRx is a fresh vegetable and fruit prescription program.

We believe that everyone deserves good food. We know that in order to make healthy food choices these foods need to be accessible and affordable to everyone. VeggieRx is a free program available in Bend and Prineville for individuals experiencing food insecurity and diet-modifiable disease, like diabetes or heart disease.

All of our vegetables and fruits are purchased from regional farmers.

“At the time I was participating in the program I was going through treatment for cancer and having surgery. It helped provide a better understanding of veggies and fruits that I normally would not eat...

I felt so much better having the different veggies to cook with and veggies that I can’t afford to buy usually.”

HDFFA PROGRAM Agricultural Support Farmers and ranchers feed our communities, and we work with them to meet their mission and connect with you, the consumer. Our educational workshops and networking opportunities provide capacity support for local farmers and ranchers to reach their full potential.

We also provide financial support through Grow & Give (see p.10) and VeggieRx Through our agricultural (see p.12) by paying farmers for their food support program, products.

Get A Taste of This Place is a regional marketing campaign to increase consumption of Central Oregon grown foods by making them easier to find and highlighting their uniqueness, while increasing profitability for the HDFFA Partners who grow and sell them.

In 2021, we are partnering with local grocers to use the Get a Taste logo to highlight High Desert producers. Keep an eye out for it! Don’t see the logo? Ask the business if they purchase Central Oregon grown and raised crops, and let them know about the campaign!

Food Sovereignty In Warm Springs

The Warm Springs community is unique for multiple reasons; a confederation of three separate Tribes that can be broken into dozens of different bands, it is one of two treaty Tribes in Oregon.

The Warm Springs reservation is the largest in Oregon and creates distinctive opportunities for agriculture and food systems. Not only is Warm Springs rich in cultural

and traditional knowledge passed down through families since time immemorial, but Warm Springs has a long and strong political identity.

People from the Warm Springs community have maintained relationships to the land, animals, and food through tradition and spirituality. This allows us to understand the world differently but our Tribal relationships to food have been disrupted deeply by colonization. Many modern barriers cause a disconnect between these traditional skills and relationships to food and everyday diets and practice.

Many of our families have spent generation after generation hunting, fishing, digging roots and picking berries. As communities and families we continue to hold feasts, celebrations and ceremonies with the changing seasons to honor the first foods that sacrificed themselves for us. Although our relationships on every level have been damaged by colonialism, there is opportunity to decolonize, evolve, and experience metamorphosis, pulling ancient traditions into modern systems.

The Warm Springs Community Action Team and the High Desert Food and Farm Alliance have partnered to create a two-year position for a project focusing on the Warm Springs food system. Using a food system assessment from the First Nations Development Institute as a guideline, WSCAT is collecting information about the existing food system and simultaneously taking community input to reimagine a new one.

development that brings in Tribal values, and assisting us in developing future projects. However, the most important piece will be to start vital conversations about where our community is when it comes to food systems and access to good food, how colonization has impacted us and created often unhealthy and even harmful environments and how we can vision a new food system and value every individual who lives here’s experience and contributions.

We aim to increase awareness about what food systems are here and to expand thinking about how to decolonize our modern day economies, diets, and lives with things like food. We hope to always center community member input, provide educational and empowerment opportunities and partner with organizations to get resources directly to the Warm Springs community members.

Central Oregon produces a bounty of foods, including ripe strawberries picked in the morning, carrots recently uprooted for market, and frost-kissed fall kale. To enjoy all that this land can offer, eat seasonally and know that you’re supporting the lives and livelihoods of local farmers, ranchers, and food businesses.

• Use the Seasonality Chart Before meal planning, visiting the farmers market or shopping at a grocery store, take a look at our seasonality chart for the fruits and vegetables that are available in our region.

• Practice Patience Bookmark recipes and wait to try them when the ingredients are in season. If it’s March and the recipe calls for tomatoes, consider waiting until August to make it. Your farmers and your palate will thank you.

• Substitute Many recipes are adaptable.

Knowing how to swap ingredients is a great way for you to cook your favorite recipes and eat seasonally at the same time. HDFFA has an easy to follow vegetable substitution guide in our Cooking Counts workbook (hdffa.org/cookingcounts) • Buy in Bulk Buying in bulk is a great way to support your local farmer, get creative in the kitchen, and save money! Consider buying
