GUIDE · SEPTEMBER 26, 2026
AI Citations: How AI Answers Choose Their Sources An AI citation is a source that an AI system links or names as evidence for its answer. Citations are the one part of an AI answer you can observe from the outside, which makes them the best evidence we have about what these systems read. In September 2026 we logged 6,443 citations across 2,100 ChatGPT answers in 21 software categories. More than half, 56 percent, pointed to vendors' own websites, and only 27 percent came from domains that ranked in Google's top ten for the same question. Here is what that means for anyone trying to be one of the sources.
01 DEFINITION
What are AI citations? When ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on web pages, the pages they show as links, footnotes or source cards are AI citations. They are not the same as recommendations: a citation says "this page supported the answer," while a recommendation says "this brand is the one to choose." Citations matter for two reasons. They are the pages whose framing and facts end up in the answer, and they are the part of an otherwise opaque process you can actually measure.
02 ORIGINAL DATA
Where 6,443 ChatGPT citations came from Across 21 teardowns we ran 100 commercial software questions per category through ChatGPT with web search and logged 6,443 citations, counting each cited domain once per answer. We classed each one as a vendor's own site, a review site or recognized publisher, or another third-party page. We also recorded whether each cited domain ranked in Google's top ten for the same question.

Three patterns stand out: Vendor sites carry more than half the evidence. Between 41 and 74 percent of citations went to vendors' own pages, depending on the category, and 56 percent overall. Your site is a real source, not just a destination. The third-party mix changes by category. Accounting leaned on recognized publishers, with 81 of 302 citations going to review sites and publishers such as NerdWallet and Fit Small Business; in business intelligence and data warehouse tools they supplied 4 of 274 and 1 of 267. CRM, help desk, scheduling and AI writing leaned on a long tail of smaller comparison sites, which made up 46 to 49 percent of their citations. Google's top ten is a minority of the evidence. Only 1,771 of 6,443 citations, 27 percent, came from domains in Google's top ten for the same question. Rank tracking alone misses most of what ChatGPT reads.

One run per question, logged out, United States, September 2026. Frequencies describe this sample, not every answer ChatGPT will ever give. Full datasets are on each teardown page. Corrected October 23, 2026: in late September Google answered some automated searches with swapped results pages, so where one of our September Google pages was swapped we now use Google's page for the same question on October 23; that replaced 481 of the 2,100 pages, and the share of citations from domains in Google's top ten was 1,490, 23 percent, before the correction.
03 MECHANICS
How AI systems choose what to cite The pattern behind those numbers is the retrieval process AI systems use to choose what to cite. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode can run many related searches across subtopics, a technique it calls query fan-out, and then link to pages that support the answer. ChatGPT search fetches pages through OpenAI's search crawler. Either way, a page is cited when it is retrieved for one of those searches and supports a specific point in the answer: a price, a definition, a comparison, a fit for a use case. That explains why so many citations come from outside the top ten for the original question. The system is not reading one results page. It is assembling evidence from several narrower searches.
04 HOW TO
How to earn more AI citations To earn more AI citations, work through these five steps. Be retrievable. Allow the search crawlers that matter (OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Claude-SearchBot, Googlebot). See our AI crawlers guide. Publish the specifics. Prices, plans, limits, integrations and who the product suits. In payments, 54 of 100 answers cited a vendor's own pricing or fees page, and the model quoted the number it found there. Write the pages answers are built from. Honest comparisons, alternatives pages and use-case pages give the model evidence for specific claims. Earn a place on the category's go-to third-party pages. Find which publishers and comparison sites your category's answers cite, and make sure you are there, accurately. Measure citations and recommendations separately. Our AI visibility guide covers the method. For the ChatGPT-specific steps, see how to get cited by ChatGPT. 05 FAQS

AI citations FAQs These AI citations FAQs cover traffic, tracking and how a citation differs from a recommendation.
Which AI systems show citations? ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode all show citations when they draw on web pages. An AI citation is a link or named source that an AI system shows as the evidence behind its answer.
Do AI citations send traffic? AI citations send some traffic, but less than a classic ranking. In a Pew Research Center study, people clicked a link inside Google's AI summaries on just 1 percent of visits. The larger value is that your page shapes the answer and your brand is seen as a source.
Why does ChatGPT cite sites that do not rank in Google? ChatGPT runs its own searches, often several per question, so it can cite sites that do not rank in Google. It picks the pages that best support specific points in its answer. In our September 2026 data, only 1,771 of 6,443 citation events, 27 percent, came from domains in Google's top ten for the same question.
Can I see which AI citations my site gets? You can see some of the AI citations your site gets. ChatGPT tags many outbound links with utm_source=chatgpt.com, so clicks show up in analytics. For citations that are not clicked, you need to sample answers directly for a fixed set of questions.
Are AI citations the same as recommendations? No, AI citations are not the same as recommendations. A page can be cited without its brand being recommended, and a brand can be recommended on the strength of other sites' pages. Track both separately.
