TWO SIDES OF OCEANSIDE: THIS YEAR’S 70.3-MILE RACE Two different perspectives from Chuck Pateros and Toby Guillette CHUCK: Last year was the first time I participated. What a blast! It was like I voted for Pedro and my wildest dreams came true as I finished strong and happy in a little under seven hours. This year the race took on an added dimension as I have committed to yet a longer distance: Ironman Arizona in November. Now I had a single goal—avoid an injury. My run training has been, well, do the swimming and biking pretty much exactly to plan. Tell “Gotta look good.” yourself that you are heavy and prone to injuries, so only plan to do half the run mileage. Finally, get sick and travel and end up doing a mile here, a mile there and a long run of…3 miles. My race number, 1994, was the year I got married. God Bless America, we’ve got it all. Race morning, 3:00 a.m. Yes, I got there before pretty much everyone but the security guards and one guy just starting to put out traffic cones. I took a quick look at the transition area and said to myself, “Idiot!” They assigned spots by number. I left the bike with the guard and headed back to the van to sleep. Of course, in the van I found the “Doctor Who” DVDs that I was supposed to take to the library on the way in because they were due the day before. I gladly spent $2.00 on gas to avoid a $1.00 late fee, and I was back in the lot about 3:30. I set the alarm for 4:30, climbed into the back and promptly went to sleep. At 4:30, the transition area was finally open so I set up the bike and dropped off my bag. I wandered around a little bit and watched the crowd filcontinued page 3
