Teen Health & Wellness Initiative When we were kids, our parents didn’t have to worry as much about our physical fitness because we were outside being active, sometimes even by choice. Technology has changed that, and who can blame this generation of kids, the technology is amazing. Unfortunately, as advances in technology increase, studies point to a decline in the wellness of our youth.
TEENS AND A LACK OF EXERCISE
HOW BAD IS IT?
• The WHO (World Health Organization) reports that only 1 in 4 teenagers, only 1 in 5 female teenagers, are getting the daily recommended amount of exercise for health. • The CDC reports that activity levels toward the end of adolescents are comparable to 60-year-olds. • Inactive teenagers are more likely to be sedentary adults. • Teen obesity increases the risk for health problems as adults including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, and kidney problems. • High-impact exercise during childhood and adolescence is important for building bone density, which has been shown to help protect agains osteoporosis later in life. • Adolescents and teens that are physically active perform better academically in certain areas. “As a father of two teenage daughters, I see the pressure today’s world places on them.
