Are Cavities Contagious? The answer might surprise you! Parents are often surprised that children develop cavities even when they are diligent about oral care at home. The bacteria that causes tooth decay actually can be passed from person to person. Cavities are caused by bacteria known as mutans streptococcus. This bacteria feeds on the sugar in your mouth (that’s sweets, sugary drinks and starchy snacks!) and it creates an acid that can eat away at the enamel on your teeth. When present, this bacteria builds plaque that contains even more acid that will cause tooth decay and gum disease. Some individuals tend to have more cavity causing bacteria than others. Though cavities and tooth decay are actually an infectious disease, the good news is that it is a highly preventable one! So how can you help fight the spread of cavities? Here are some simple tips: 1. Avoid sharing eating utensils (that means don't use your fork to feed your child!). 2. Clean pacifiers with warm water and soap, not your mouth (or bring an extra clean one along). 3. Don’t share toothbrushes (everyone in the family needs their own toothbrush). 4. Keep a clean mouth - Brush 2 minutes, 2 times a day (and don't forget to floss). 5. Use a toothpaste with fluoride (just a tiny bit about the size of a grain of rice for children under 3).
See a dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings. Taking care of your children's teeth on a daily basis and seeing a pediatric dentist twice a year can help prevent cavities from forming and leave your children with a healthy smile that will last a lifetime!
