FROM THE EDITOR

I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and can recall my first stab at business. When I was 7, I stayed up late into the night putting together friendship pins to sell at a garage sale. (Friendship pins were a popular trend in the 80’s, and consisted of a safety pin with colored beads threaded through them. Kids pinned them on their clothes and traded them.) I started with 100, and at the end of the day, I still had 100. This was my first hard lesson in business, and looking back, the issues were easy to spot. I didn’t have the right product for my audience. But at the time, I was hurt and confused. Business has a tendency to make a person feel that way. Some tips I’ve learned since then are best expressed from one of my favorite business faith-based business speakers, Terri Savelle Foy: 1. Someone else’s success doesn’t take away from your own.

5

2019-07-08.indd 5

2. The one thing that separates winners from losers more than anything else is that winners take action. 3. Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. Metro Woman, I encourage you to work toward your dreams whether that’s retirement, a direct sales success, or building your own business! Here’s to you! Metro Woman Angi, Owner/Publisher

Ask five women her earliest memory of a beauty product, and we guarantee Avon will be in the top five. Ask Penny Terry about her favorite beauty product memory, and she’ll tell you about her travels! This June, Penny Terry returned from Los Caboz grinning from ear-to-ear. Always one to share a smile, this time it was because her all expenses paid trip to Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula was a dream-come-true. Fast friends with everyone she meets, Penny relaxed on the beach, visiting with Avon’s Women of Enterprise Dana O’Daniel, Karen Blanchard Tucker, her sister, Becky, and many more sisters and brothers in the Avon family. Since introduced to the Avon sales opportunity, Penny has traveled on four trips - all with Avon! Her first trip out of the country to the beautiful Punta Cana in 2017. Penny’s hard work earned her these trips and national recognition for her dedication. When you join Penny as an Avon Representative, you can earn your first Avon trip, too!

How OneSolePurpose provides

shoes f o r k i d s

OneSolePurpose is a volunteer run, local non-profit focused on providing new shoes for kids in area Public Title I Elementary Schools. Title I Schools have a high percentage of low-income students attending. Since its inception in 2010, OneSolePurpose has given away over 20,000 pairs of new shoes to local kids. OneSolePuporse does this by partnering with local churches, businesses, and individuals who have big hearts, generous character, and a love for kids. Partners donate not only money but time, energy, and love to help make what they do possible. Each fall, OneSolePurpose determines how many schools they can serve based on donations and money raised. Every student

at that school gets a pair of new shoes. Volunteers visit each recipient school, sizes every child individually, and lets them choose what color they want. Shoes are then ordered from Shoe Carnival, a huge supporter of the organization. Once the shoes arrive, volunteers sort them by school, classroom, and student, and deliver them. On Shoe Giveaway Day, volunteers spend time with each kid, utfitting them with new socks and putting new shoes on their feet. It’s a wonderful sight to see 300 kids all excited, wearing their new shoes! OneSolePurpose would love to have you be a part of what we do. Please contact us at info@ onesolepurpose. com or visit www. onesolepurpose.com to find out more.

END FOOD STRESS: GAIN FREEDOM AND CONFIDENCE Have you been on more diets than you can count? Is food causing you stress or guilt? Do you feel confused about how or what to eat?

“I don’t put people on diets.” Some people are shocked when I tell them this. You might ask, but aren’t you a dietitian? And what exactly does a nondiet dietitian do? I’m glad you asked! I don’t put people on diets for a very simple reason. They don’t work! Yes, they might “work” for a short time, but long term 95% of people will gain back all the weight they lost, many even more. If this is you, it’s not your fault. Diets work against you by lowering your metabolism and increasing your preoccupation with food. If you struggle with cravings and/ or overeating, you might think you need a diet, but in reality, it’s likely that dieting has CAUSED these problems. I tell people over and over again. “You haven’t failed. Dieting has failed you!!!” Repeat that until it sinks in. So then, what do I do as a dietitian? I help individuals improve their health through healing their relationship with food. Diets make food the enemy and cause you to lose touch with your natural body cues. I can help you tune back into and trust your body’s natural cues, eat for physical rather than emotional reasons, and be at peace with food and your body. I will work with you to heal the damage from dieting and find your healthiest self. You deserve to be healthy and find joy in eating. Want to learn more? Reach out to me, I’d love to hear your story and see how I can help.

LESS is Everyday Extraordinary

MORE

Ten years ago, Amity Farr was living the typical American life, feeling adrift in her circumstances. In her search for help, she found a book that opened her eyes to the life-changing magic of minimalism. Using the book’s principals, she began leading a minimalist lifestyle and soon retired her debt, decluttered her house and found what everyone wants: more time, more money, and less stress. Now an expert minimalist, Amity spends her time, helping others discover the joys the lifestyle offers. She wrote “Simply Fly Life: The Manual” and now helps others on their journey to discover the benefits of more time, more money, and less stress through her minimalist techniques, mindset, and philosophy.

SIX REASONS WHY LESS IS MORE BY AMITY FARR simpleflylife.com/

Many of us have a gnawing inside for more. More is better, right? But what if less is more, and more is less? When you want what you have, you have what you want! Gratitude and discontent cannot co-exist. LESS TIME SPENT MAINTAINING THINGS: If you don’t own it, you don’t have to maintain it, fix it, or dispose of it. Refuse what you do not need. LESS TIME SPENT MAINTAINING THINGS: If you don’t own it, you don’t have to maintain it, fix it, or dispose of it. Refuse what you do not need. LESS MONEY SPENT ACQUIRING THINGS YOU DON’T NEED: If you don’t spend your money, it will still be in your wallet. Living with less can provide you a surplus with your present income. EASIER TO FIND THINGS: If the dinglewhatzit is not buried under a layer of clutter, you will know right where to find it when you need it. You won’t buy an extra and then find what you are looking for later. Make sure every item you own has a “home” within your home. LESS TIME SPENT CLEANING: Less knickknacks means easier dusting. Less things to mop around really speeds up the process. Imagine if cleaning your house took less than two hours. It can happen! LESS STRESS FROM YOUR DWELLING: If the laundry has been done and the clothes are put away, you can rest easier in your evenings and on your weekends. Sort the mail daily; put away the clutter. Kick procrastination to the curb, and kick back and relax at the day’s end. LESS HASSLE IF YOU HAVE TO MOVE: If you don’t own it, you won’t have to pack it, or pay to move it. Less effort, and less money can be spent with less clutter. Doesn’t that sound nice? 14
