Connecting The Dots... To Discover Your Business Idea
PAULA SHUMAKER O’DONNELL
ave you ever wondered if you could start your own business? Do you have a hobby or a knack for doing things that everyone compliments you on, saying, “You should start a business doing that.”? I believe God gives us clues to our dreams. My sister and my dreams started around the ages 8 and 10. We grew up in an unhealthy environment. Being the big sister, I tried to protect her. We stayed in our room many nights. While I created programs and fun things for us to do, she was in charge of
fixing snacks (bologna and cheese which she adorned with mustard smiley faces!). Funny thing is, I ended up developing programs and ideas for many non-profits, and she grew up to have her own catering business, and eventually became Global Catering Director for a big university. What clues has your life given you towards your career or business idea? Make a timeline from elementary age, teen years, early adulthood, up to now, and you will find a common thread of clues that point the way to what you are designed to do. Were you the group organizer? The artistic one? The natural born
leader? Did you excel at details? Did you sell the most products for your school fundraiser? Are you the encourager? The party planner? The person who loves animals and anything connected to them? Are you the one that makes the delicious treats for any gettogether? Search for your clues and connect the dots. You never know where your idea might take you… Paula Shumaker O’Donnell writes “Monday Motivation” for businesses, individuals, and publications such as “Guideposts Magazine,” “Mysterious Ways,” “Angels on Earth,” and “Woman’s World.” Visit her website at theworldneedsyou. com or email mycoachpaula@ aol.com

Are Your Assetts in Danger Because of Your Business? by Ketchen Willison Many entrepreneurs own and operate their businesses as sole proprietorships. The only problem with this is that in the event the company is sued, the owner’s individual assets (such as their cars or home) are fairly easy to attack or attach in a court of law. One solution to this is to have a trust own the business. If a business is owned by a properly established trust, and it is sued, in most cases the only assets that can be attacked or attached in a court of law are those that are in the trust itself. Better yet, an effective and inexpensive way of liability protection is to effectively change the business from a sole proprietorship to a Limited Liability Company (LLC). An LLC comes with numerous benefits not only to the business but to you as the business owner. It gives you the chance of separating your business entity from personal activities, meaning that creditors cannot target your personal assets to satisfy liabilities of the business.
For superior protection, while also providing a means of passing your business to loved ones later on, Family Limited Partnership (FLP) is probably the most beneficial structure available for wealth preservation via asset protection, estate planning and tax minimization. The effectiveness of an FLP in providing asset protection and has withstood the test of time and court scrutiny. The best thing is because, those assets cannot be attached by the personal creditors of a partner and, if sued and your creditors win, they wind up with a tax debt and legal fees but still cannot reach the assets of an FLP. Does this sound confusing? Call us at Midwest Center for Law & Justice, and we will be happy to explain further!

Non-food Related Reasons You May Be Feeling Stuck You’ve been making healthier food choices and even saw some significant improvements in the beginning of your weight loss attempt. However, you’ve now seemed to hit a plateau. Here are some non-food related reasons why you are not seeing or feeling any improvements lately…
Being too focused on the scale With factors such as fluid fluctuations and building muscle, the scale can be deceptive. It is most practical and accurate to assess our accomplishments by how we feel and how our clothes are fitting.
Not exercising If you’re eating healthy and not prioritizing exercise of some sort, you will likely hit that plateau. While eating clean is a crucial piece of staying healthy, exercise is also necessary to achieve your health goals. Find the exercise that fits into your schedule and that you enjoy the most.
Exercising too much If you don’t exercise enough, it’s not ideal. However, if you exercise too much it causes stress, which can deter your weight loss efforts. If you’re working out too much, take some time to reevaluate your workout strategy for better results. Perhaps think in terms of adding some weight lifting to your work out plan.
You’re still drinking sugar You eat healthy meals, but your morning coffee is filled with cream and sugar, or you’re drinking a lot of other sugary drinks. Try substituting infused water for your beverage of choice until you find that you may crave water more than that sugary drink. So, if you want to start seeing improvements again, reevaluate the non-food related daily habits that may be hindering your progress and make those adjustments!

Accounting for the Direct Sales Representative by Lydia Paasch
For many women, direct sales is a great way to do something they love and make some extra money. It offers them the freedom of setting their own schedule, the chance to meet new people, and the ability to buy their favorite items at discounted prices. Unfortunately, many women don’t realize that whether a hobby or a sole source of income, the IRS considers direct sales a small business and treats the income received as such. Enjoy your business and don’t stress during tax time with these tips for tracking income and deductions. Separate Business and Personal Income Income from direct sales is taxable. It is very important that business and personal items are clearly identified and separated. The easiest and recommended way to do this is to open a separate checking account exclusively for the direct sales business. Sales Tax While most direct sales companies handle the collection and payment of sales tax for their representatives, some do not. Know your organization’s policies and make sure you know or are informed about whether or not you are responsible to make sales tax payments yourself. Track Deductible Expenses There are many deductions direct sales representatives can take advantage of, however it is important to know the rules regarding what qualifies as a deduction and to document all deductible expenses. For more information on how I can help you make identifying and tracking your business income and expenses (including mileage) a breeze, for just $10 a month, call me at 417-893-0836 or email lydia.paasch@ mlpconsulting.biz Lydia Paasch is a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor and the owner of MLP Consulting + Design, LLC in Springfield, Missouri.
