Audrey Retires and Passes the Torch “After 13 years as publisher of Metro Woman Magazine I have decided that it’s time to stop and smell the roses.” I would like to thank each and every person who has been part of this journey with me as I couldn’t have done it without your support. I know that I leave you in good hands with the new owner, and now publisher Angela Frizell. With over a decade experience in marketing, Angela has worked as marketing director, communications coordinator, designer, project manager, and web developer. Her expertise is in digital marketing, but her heart has always been in print. A journalism scholarship recipient, Angela took time off between finishing school and starting her career. She left college to join the Army Reserves, and when she returned, married her high

Angela Frizell

Her career followed a similar windy path, evolving as she moved through each realm of marketing but always pointing back to print. Her favorite course in college was desktop publishing and she was often told by her instructors that she had a knack for it. Today, she helps companies strengthen and grow their brand by initiating interest both online and offline through content writing, community management, and campaign development. She lives in the Springfield, Missouri area, but has worked with companies big and small throughout the country. Angela’s professional commitment is to help businesses grow, but she’s

of the Ozark Mountain Ridge Runners. Before all else, she’s a wife, mother, neighbor, and fellow female consumer who knows how busy women’s lives can get. She understands how sometimes it’s a breath of fresh air to sit down and flip through a magazine, learning about new services and products, finding something that’s new-to-you, that you’ve always wanted to try, or something you have absolutely been looking for. “That’s what Metro Woman has always been about,” Angela adds. “After years of admiring the Springfield Metro Woman Resource Directory, I look forward to building on the momentum and professionalism the magazine always offered the community, and to grow the publication while continuing to provide resources that enhance women’s lives in Springfield, Branson, Nixa, Ozark, and surrounding cities.” Angela lives with her husband, artist and illustrator, David Frizell, and her two youngest children. She enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, and especially enjoys playing with her granddaughter. I will be assisting Angela while she learns the ins and outs of the business. I look forward to watching her energy, passion, and education take the publication to great heights.

A Healing Situation for Everyone The girls at Ashley House gave Truman another chance. Truman was a rescue dog, a golden collie mix, living at the Transitional Living home for teenagers in Springfield. In a special project there, 10 teenagers nurture dogs that have been neglected and prepare them for adoption. According to Alisa Griffiths, site director of Ashley House, the girls develop responsibility and empathy through the project. They manage every aspect of it, starting with choosing a dog from a licensed shelter. “We take the dog that we think needs us the most,” says one resident, “and we try to love them just the way they are!” Over the past year, the girls have succeeded in preparing five dogs for permanent homes. The first dog came with the name Chewy, and chewed on everything, of course. His anxiety decreased over a few months and a family chose him for their pet. The collie, Truman, had a sweet, laid-back personality and found a permanent home in mid-spring. “A lot of rescue dogs have separation anxiety,” Griffith states. “They do well with us because, with 16 staff who come and go and 10 girls living here, there is always someone here to give the dog a pat or a squeeze. Comforting a dog is good for the girls, too, who all come from traumatic backgrounds. They face some of their own issues about being in foster care.”

“We try to love them just the way they are!” Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, provides Christ-centered care and support to children and families in need. 417.862.9634 800.383.8147 Web:

Originally known as the Regional Girls Shelter, Ashley House is now a Transitional Living program of Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services. It helps young women, ages 16-21, as they face the challenging transition of ‘aging out’ of the foster care system. Staff member Josh Marsh explains, “Almost a fourth of Missouri’s children in foster care are 16 or older. About 40% of kids in that situation will drop out of high school. We help prevent the likelihood of their becoming another statistic of being unemployed, homeless or in the criminal justice system.” While they finish school, the girls learn about budgeting, time management, and self-care. Many earn a driver’s license, start college or hold down a job before they move out of Ashley House. “All of the girls can relate to these dogs that are harder to place,” Griffiths says, “and they enjoy the attention from the dogs. As they take care of somebody else, they see themselves in a better light. It’s a healing situation for everyone.” The agency holds a fundraising luncheon in September. Nine Ways to Reduce your Legal Costs in Family Law Part 3 of 4 5. The more work you do for you lawyer, the less work your lawyer will have to do for you. Lawyers require information. The lawyer’s first, best, most obvious source of information is her client. Skilled family law attorneys have tools in place to help them gather the information that they must have. Questionnaires, checklists, etc., are all common information gathering devices. If your lawyer utilizes any of these tools, it is a wonderful opportunity for you to save money. Invest the time and energy to complete the homework your lawyer gives you. If you don’t, your lawyer will have to invest the time (hence your money) to gather the information elsewhere. Along the same lines, educate yourself. The more information you have in your own mind about your family expenses, assets, obligations, etc., the easier it will be for you to explain to your lawyer. 6. Be your own legal assistant. A frequent component of domestic action is sharing of that information with the other side. Copies of bank statements, vehicle title certificates, investment account statements, loan documents, credit card statements, pay stubs, tax returns all have to be delivered to the adverse party. If you can provide these records to your attorney, he will not have to

take the time to get them for you. Whenever possible, run your own copies, take notes when you talk to your attorney on the phone (so you don’t have to call him later to doublecheck on the conversation), and look up any phone numbers and addresses he may need in working up your case. 7. Get smart, not mad. Look at your domestic action as a business transaction. You are after the best economic result. It makes no sense to pay a lawyer a $1000 to get you something worth $100. While the attorney can put forth a valiant effort to maintain control of the case, the effort usually succumbs to the client’s hostility. From this come two certainties: first, the action is going to take longer to conclude; second, attorney’s fees are going to skyrocket, because more attorney time will be necessary.

This column is designed to give general information and should not be construed as legal advice on any specific fact or circumstance & does not create an attorney/client relationship. The choice of a lawyer is an important decision and should not be based solely upon advertisements.
