From the Editor Tradition is the catalyst from which memories are made. My family, like most, gathered each Thanksgiving for a feast. The women always cooked for days, rising early to bake the turkey. After the meal, the men would gather together fighting the effects of L-tryptophan in front of the television or to share their latest workshop project. The women would happily visit, washing dishes while the children played. Christmas held a similar tradition, but with gifts and toys added into the mix. I remember the first year I couldn’t make it home for the holidays, and how the day felt empty. I called home, hoping the titter of laughter and conversation in the background would help. It didn’t’ take long to realize that the tradition lived on year after year whether or not I was there. However, each memory helped knit together the tapestry of our family traditions. Now, I’ve created my own traditions in addition to those with my extended family. As you move through this holiday season, take time to recall past traditions and recognize those you’ve created as well. It only takes one shared memory to begin a tradition that can last a lifetime! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

I

A LEOPARD PRINT PILLOW, VINTAGE CLOTH QUOTE, & ANYTHING PURPLE PAULA SHUMAKER O’DONNELL

’ve learned a few lessons about gift-giving over the years, but none struck home as much as one office Christmas party. As we opened our gifts, a bold leopard print pillow, a beautiful vintage cloth motivational quote and a purple, furry pillow, we started laughing. Because each of us gave something that we would like to get. I was into vintage quotes at the time, one woman was bold and loved leopard pillows, clothes, etc. and the other woman liked anything purple! Each gift looked like the giver and not the receiver! It was so obvious that we had to laugh at ourselves! It made me question how many times I had given something that represented me – instead of the person receiving the gift? All the gifts were given with the best of intentions but we didn’t really think,“Who is the gift for?” or “What is their personality?” Years ago, a friend gave me a motivational quote book for Christmas. She knew, as a writer, I was always looking for inspiring quotes. I keep that book near my desk and use it all the time. I think loving thoughts of her – every time I use it.

Paula Shumaker O’Donnell writes “Monday Motivation” for businesses, individuals, and publications such as “Guideposts Magazine,” “Mysterious Ways,” The book was a great gift, but it was her thoughtfulness that “Angels on Earth,” was the best gift. Of course, our time, our attention, and and “Woman’s World.” connecting with others is the best gift of all. But most of us Visit her website at also like to give a gift on special occasions. Next time you are about to reach for a leopard pillow or purple anything… theworldneedsyou. ask yourself, “Would she love this as much as I do?” If you can com or email mycoachpaula@ answer yes – then you know that’s a wrap! aol.com

Find Potential Inside Your Closet

In a closet overflowing with clothes, I had nothing to wear until Kandice Alexander unleashed its potential and showed me options that I didn’t know existed. Now this Metro Woman has a new fashion best friend -- Kandice Alexander, owner of 5 Elements Esthetics and Makeup Studio and Alexander Personal Image Styling. Kandice is a licensed esthetician, makeup artist and personal stylist. I resigned myself to wearing 10% of my clothes, donning the same blouse and pants each week. Overwhelmed with choices, I continued to add to my wardrobe every season because I wasn’t using what I had.

I Googled Alexander Personal Image Styling and called for a consultation, fully expecting her to look in my closet and dramatically exclaim, “Outdated! Out of style! What were you thinking?!” Instead, her gracious methods allowed me to experience my clothing the same way I had when I found each piece in the store - with admiration and expectation. She even helped me discover how to

organize and pair my jewelry so I can use every piece, even heirlooms I thought I’d never use! “I give you permission,” explained Kandice. “Permission to step outside of the box and pair your items in ways you didn’t think was possible.” She noted the staples I was missing, and we planned a shopping trip to fill the gaps. “For people who love shopping a little too much, I make this a focused effort, and for people who don’t like shopping, I relieve the anxiety associated with shopping.” As part of the latter group, I was surprised by the ease of the process. And Kandice knew where to shop for my budget and taste! This spring, Kandice will help me review my warmer weather wardrobe. “It’s a 12-month contract,” she said. “I help you now, and you call on me anytime you feel unsure, when you’re shopping, or when you just need someone to tell you, “Yes! That outfit works.” Or if it doesn’t work, tell you how to make it work!” Make the most of your wardrobe! Contact Kandice for your consult today! https://kandicealexander.com/

Ev A single mother, Michelle Rador beat the odds when she graduated from Niangua high school with a young child at home. She continued to beat the odds when she got her nursing degree as the mother of three young children, but these challenges, though extraordinary, aren’t what set her apart from the crowd. Michelle is an ultra runner. In September, Michelle participated in the Hawk 100-mile trail run challenge after recovering from a

sprained ankle in mid-August. In fact, just a couple short weeks after her sprain, she ran a 5k… on crutches. “A race is all about mindset,” explained Michelle. “I’ve overcome so many challenges in life, distance is a discomfort I can control!” Michelle has taken on 5Ks, marathons, half-marathons, and everything in between, but Hawk was her greatest distance yet. Shortly after her experience with the Hawk run, Michelle was approached by a major TV producer and interviewed for a reality program.

Her recent encounters are quite extraordinary, and Michelle was equally shocked by them. “I’m nobody. I’m just a random girl trying to do her thing.” Her upbeat spirit allows her to make friends wherever she goes, but her drive and ambition are truly inspirational. That’s why Michelle is our “Everyday Extraordinary 417 Metro Woman!” Thanks, Michelle for being such an inspiration! Photo of Michelle on crutches, used with permission from Gary Momphard, Facebook. WHAT THE PODCAST?!

If you’re just learning of podcasts or are unclear on what they are, read on! Podcasts are sound files, usually recorded weekly or biweekly. Many people who develop podcasts set them up like a radio talk show with different episodes focused on topics or featuring special guests. Churches are even using them to broadcast sermons. You can subscribe to them, download episodes, and listen whenever you have time. People love them because they feature life lessons, special guests, or even how-to sessions. The Springfield metro area has a plethora of talented and popular podcasts. Below are a couple of our favorite up-andcoming podcasts we think you may like. Picture Imperfect

Unsung Dreamers

Deneé and Shannon have been talking about what they can “do” together since their friendship began. Both gifted with an ability to talk without breathing, share without thinking and laugh without fear of snorting, it was inevitable for them to land on podcasting as an appropriate outlet for their passions.

Having spent most their lives pursuing the ‘musical dream’, Dan and Tara Fritz explore the stories of others who have done the same. Currently based in Springfield, MO, this married couple dives into the lives and stories of their local music scene in hopes to gain knowledge, inspiration and connection to their fans, by giving them the platform that they deserve. Having fame and fortune is not the only reason we dream. It’s not the destination of everyone’s purpose. However... the struggles, the triumphs, the pain, the joy, the satisfaction, the being broke down on the side of the road with only a dollar in your pocket... are all shared experiences. Get to know your not-so-famous local artists, writers, singers, players and even those behind the scenes whose stories will inspire you as much as any others.

Both Shannon and Deneé demand excellence from their craft and wanted to launch not just a podcast, but a community movement. Bringing in humor and honesty as they tackle the big “perfection” monster. They want nothing more than to hear that their friends and fans are able to silence the voice in their heads that tells them they aren’t good enough. To listen to the show, search for “Picture Imperfect” in your podcast player, or visit www.pictureimperfect.show.

Creating a Stress-Free Holiday

The holidays are coming! It’s a time of year known for being busy and stressful. You likely have several invitations to gatherings, a list of people to send holiday cards to, and the daunting task of braving the crowds to find gifts for your loved ones. All of this, on top of your normal everyday life, can be overwhelming. We wanted to share with you some of our favorite ways to navigate this busy, stressful time of year and make this season more enjoyable, less stressful, and a time you will fondly remember.

Put forth great effort to be present. It’s almost a reflex to pick up our phones when we have a free moment. One idea is to leave electronics in another room. Don’t allow yourself the temptation to pick up your phone and disengage from your loved ones. Stop and think through what’s going on around you. What do you smell, hear, and feel? Focus on dialing in and being present.

Give up those expectations. Dropping the expectation of perfection allows you to be prepared for when things don’t go as planned. There is joy to be found in each situation. When things go awry, spend your energy finding gratitude in your circumstances and enjoying as much of your time as you possibly can.

Find time to move. It’s important to keep moving! Even if it’s just a brisk walk, get outside, breathing in fresh air, while burning off calories and keeping your heart rate up.
