O

ctober in the Ozarks is generally a month of change. Leaves are falling, cooler weather has moved in and a crispness is in the air. What else do you know about October? Here are some fun facts: Did you know that it’s National Chili Month or more US Presidents have been born in October than any other month? October’s birthstones are pink tourmaline and opal and the birth flower is the calendula. Babies born between September and November are more likely to live to 100 than those who were born in other times of the year.

We’ll celebrate Columbus Day on October 12th and, of course, Halloween on the 31st. But don’t forget about my personal favorite—National Chocolate Day, which is October 28th. Now that’s a reason to celebrate!

A Dietitians Guide to Navigating Nutrition >>> Around Town

I

’ve seen many patients in the past that are completely overwhelmed by all the nutrition advice around them. They want to make a change, but are completely dwarfed by all the information. Dr. Oz says one thing, their Doctor said another, and their nutritionist told them yet another. Should they choose fatfree? Low-sodium? Diet soda? Regular soda? Butter? Margarine? The list goes on and on. It’s enough to make them throw up their arms and choose none of the above.

However, I try to challenge my clients to flip their thinking a bit. How exciting that we are making new discoveries every day! What an awesome world we live in to constantly be on the cutting edge of what’s new. What a boring place it would be if we had it all figured out and knew every phytonutrient there is out there and every trace mineral. Nutrition Science is ever evolving and changing daily and what an awesome time to be a consumer with all we have available to us!

As a Dietitian, I agree with their feelings of overwhelm. Nutrition is a Science that is constantly changing, constantly evolving. What we teach clients today might be different tomorrow depending on what new study comes out or new information is available. It’s difficult to stay ahead of the curve and to always know what the most recent recommendation is.

I challenge you, if you are feeling overwhelmed on where to start or how to begin a healthy eating journey to start small and start with what you know. It has never changed that fruits provide vitamins and fiber, it hasn’t changed that whole grains provide fiber, it hasn’t changed that dairy products are loaded with calcium and other important minerals,

Live Well, Age Well <<< it hasn’t changed that protein from animals are complete and give us all the essential amino acids our bodies need.

Focus in on what you do know. Take small steps. Learn what you can and do away with other information that bogs you down or may not pertain to your journey with nutrition. Small consistent changes are key. Pick one thing to change such as adding a vegetable with lunch, or maybe it’s an extra glass of water before dinner, or maybe you choose to drink a cup of coffee in the AM vs. 2 cups. Whatever your goal is make it attainable.

One of my favorite quotes has always been,

“The only thing stopping you from reaching your goal is you, so get out of your way!”

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds Seeds from a pumpkin salt olive oil

Clean the seeds by placing them in a bowl of water and removing the guts of the pumpkin from the seeds.

Rinse and place in a medium-sized pot of water. Add 1 tsp salt. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 10 minutes.

Drain seeds and dry lightly with a paper towel or tea towel.

Spread seeds onto a baking sheet and drizzle with olive oil. Salt lightly.

Roast in a 325F degree oven for 10 minutes, stir and roast for another 8-10 minutes.

Cool slightly and enjoy!
