GIVING THANKS

N

ovember is a time of year where we stop to give thanks for our “abundant harvest.” On Thanksgiving Day, many of us will be with friends and family making and sharing memories. Be sure to be aware of those around you who may not have others to celebrate with. I’m sure they’d enjoy a quick phone call or that extra piece of pumpkin pie delivered to their door.

On November 11th we will honor our Veterans who have served our country and fought for our freedom. In the Ozarks, there are many ways to celebrate. Take a look at the listing on page 5 to find an event that appeals to you. You may also want to place a flag outside your home as a symbol of support for our troops.

We have many wonderful events listed in our calendar on pages 12-13. Be sure to look there for ways to get out in November. If you have a need that our advertisers can help you with, be sure to contact them. They are dedicated to area seniors and would love the opportunity to assist you.

Celebrating Veterans around the Ozarks SPRINGFIELD The Southwest Missouri Veterans Day Parade will take place on Saturday, November 7th at 10am. The theme this year is “Spirit of 45” marking the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War II. The parade starts on E. Trafficway and N. Sherman Parkway—right in front of Hammons Field and will proceed west through Downtown Springfield. Please visit swmoveteransdayparade.com for a full parade map and details of the event.

Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield will waive entrance fees, commercial tour fees and transportation entrance fees in recognition of Veterans Day on Wednesday, November 11th. The Battlefield is located at 6424 W. Farm Rd 182, Republic, MO. Call 417-732-2662 for more information.

BRANSON On Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11 at 7am, there will be a Morning Flag Raising and Wreath Laying Ceremony at College of the Ozarks. This event will take place at the Main Flag Pole on Chapel Lawn. This event is free and open to Veterans and their families.

Advance tickets are not required.

While visiting the College of the Ozarks Campus, you will want to visit the official Missouri Vietnam Veterans Memorial that was dedicated earlier this year. The names of the 1,410 sons and daughters of Missouri who lost their lives during the Vietnam War are engraved on two walls of granite, divided by a bronze statue representing the Vietnam War Veterans who survived to return home. The Memorial is open daily until 10pm. For more information, call 417-690-2212.

Branson hosts the largest Veterans Day Parade in the Nation on Wednesday, November 11th at 11am. This event will conclude a week-long celebration entitled Branson’s Veterans Homecoming Week. The 82nd Annual Veterans Day Parade will take place in Historic Downtown Branson. Bring your chairs and blankets (as the weather dictates) and join us as we celebrate all our American Veterans!

A Guide for

Talking with Your Doctor

H

ow well you and your doctor talk to each other is one of the most important parts of getting good health care. But, talking to your doctor isn’t always easy. It takes time and effort on your part as well as your doctor’s.

In the past, the doctor typically took the lead and the patient followed.

Today, a good patient-doctor relationship is more of a partnership. You and your doctor can work as a team, along with nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers, to solve your medical problems and keep you healthy.

Here are some tips to making good time of your doctor visits: Be honest—It is tempting to say what you think the doctor wants to hear, for example, that you smoke less or eat a more balanced diet than

you really do. While this is natural, it’s not in your best interest. Your doctor can suggest the best treatment only if you say what is really going on. For instance, you might say: “I have been trying to quit smoking, as you recommended, but I am not making much headway.”

Decide what questions are most important—Pick three or four questions or concerns that you most want to talk about with the doctor. You can tell him or her what they are at the beginning of the appointment, and then discuss each in turn. If you have time, you can then go on to other questions.

Stick to the point—Although your doctor might like to talk with you at length, each patient is given a limited amount of time. To make the best use of your time, stick to the point. For instance, give the doctor a brief

Live Well, Age Well <<< description of the symptom, when it started, how often it happens, and if it is getting worse or better.

Share your point of view about the visit—Tell the doctor if you feel rushed, worried, or uncomfortable.

If necessary, you can offer to return for a second visit to discuss your concerns. Try to voice your feelings in a positive way. For example, you could say something like: “I know you have many patients to see, but I’m really worried about this. I’d feel much better if we could talk about it a little more.”

Remember, the doctor may not be able to answer all your questions—Even the best doctor may be unable to answer some questions.

Most doctors will tell you when they don’t have answers. They also may help you find the information you need or refer you to a specialist. If a doctor regularly brushes off your questions or symptoms as simply a part of aging, think about looking for another doctor.

Taking an active role in your healthcare and developing a partnership with your medical care providers is key to staying healthy. They will help you navigate to the resources you need to improve your quality of life and keep you on the road to good health.

INGREDIENTS FOR CAKE

INGREDIENTS FOR GLAZE

3 cups apples, finely chopped 2 cups sugar 1 cup vegetable oil 2 eggs 2 tsp vanilla 3 cups flour 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp salt 1 cup nuts (optional)

1 1/2 cup powdered sugar 3 to 4 T milk 2 tsp vanilla (optional)

Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Combine apples, sugar, oil, eggs and vanilla into a large bowl and stir together.

In a separate bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt. Add flour mixture to wet ingredients and mix well. Stir in nuts. Pour into 9 X 13 baking dish and bake for 1 hour. Whisk together glaze ingredients until smooth. Pour over cake while warm. Enjoy with family and friends!
