Morning Sickness Remedies Is there anything worse than being excited about being pregnant but feeling so nauseous that you can’t enjoy it for months? Here are a few things we frequently recommend to our patients.

Please check with your healthcare provider who knows the specifics of your situation when trying various remedies.

The cause of morning sickness is not fully known, although there are many theories, including hormonal changes in pregnancy, low blood sugar, gastric overloading, slowed peristalsis (intestinal action), toxin overload, and several other possibilities.

Nausea occurs in half-to-three-quarters of pregnant women. Most women experience the worst nausea and vomiting around 11 weeks gestation with symptoms beginning around 5-6 weeks. About half of pregnant women with nausea and vomiting find it completely gone by 14 weeks and 90 percent by 22 weeks. Persistent and severe nausea and vomiting beyond the first trimester may be hyperemesis gravidarum and should be taken seriously and should be discussed with your provider.

The following suggestions are common remedies that often help alleviate or eliminate nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, but keep in mind that there certainly isn’t a “one size fits all” remedy! A combination of the following suggestions may be effective.

• Eat small, frequent meals, ideally a protein /carb combination each time, as often as every two hours. Small amounts of food are more apt to be retained than three large meals and prevents the blood sugar from dropping enough to cause nausea. If this 8

seems to work for you, keep snacks by your bed (almonds, cheese sticks, yogurt, peanut butter and apples, etc.) and eat several times during the night. This will keep your blood sugar from falling by morning, which would leave you feeling nauseous upon awaking.

Keep in mind that eating a high sugar or high carb food may initially make you feel better for a short time, but you will feel even more nauseous with a blood sugar crash shortly.

This is where protein is so important – to sustain and level your blood sugars.

• Eat dry crackers or toast or plain yogurt before starting your day in the morning.

• Sip on ginger or raspberry leaf tea. The best ginger tea is made by pouring one cup of boiling water over 3-5 slices of fresh ginger root. Let steep 5 minutes and sip slowly.

• Take ginger capsules with your meals.

• Avoid foods with strong or offensive odors.

• Sip on small amounts of carbonated beverages - especially the old-fashioned ginger ale that contains real ginger. (We don’t recommend doing this on a regular basis, but it does help some women with severe nausea!)

• Rest.

• Try wearing “sea bands” for nausea.

• Inhale peppermint oil for temporary relief from nausea.

• Chew mint gum.

• Vitamin B6, either 25 mg four times a day or 50mg twice daily can be very effective.

• Use medication if all else fails and you are becoming dehydrated and nutritionally deprived from frequent vomiting. Some women find 50mg of vitamin B6 and 1 Unisom tablet (an over-the-counter sleep aid) at bedtime in addition to 25mg B6 twice daily to be very helpful. (Or, 25mg B6 and ½ Unisom tablet three times a day). Unisom can cause drowsiness. Consult your healthcare provider before taking any medication!

Nine Ways to Reduce your Legal Costs in Family Law • Part 2 of 4 3. Use your time with your lawyer wisely. Most lawyers bill in incremental time. The concept is not unique. Most service professionals (doctors, dentists, accountants) base their efforts, and prices, on measured units of time. In the case of lawyers those units are typically blocks of minutes. For instance, many lawyers will charge in six minute increments. As soon as the work starts, you are charged every six minutes. As an example, at $200 per hour, one six minute increment has a value/ cost to you of $20. If you have a two minute conversation with your lawyer, that is one six minute increment, or $20 in fees. If you have a seven minute conversation, that is two six minute increments, or $40 in fees.

To realize maximum efficiency under this system plan ahead before meeting with or talking to your lawyer. Save your questions for one conversation, rather than calling up your lawyer every time you have something on your mind. Four two minute conversations equals $80 in legal fees. One eight minute conversation equals $40 in legal fees. Even though he’s holding your future in his hands, and there’s a natural inclination to talk to your attorney as a friend, socializing can become expensive. If you invite your attorney to

lunch (or vice-versa), find out first if it will be “on the clock.” If you’ll be discussing business, have a pen and paper with you so the lunchtime information doesn’t disappear with the last cup of coffee.

4. Your lawyer is your legal representative, not your psychologist. Although you may find a genuinely sympathetic attorney, don’t use him as a counselor. Go to a licensed therapist. An experienced mental health professional will be more effective, will cost less per hour, and will help you deal with the emotional peaks and pits that continually throw you off balance. In addition to that, you’ll have developed a relationship with a therapist who can guide you through the rocky recovery period after the judgment is granted.
