Get a Brighter Smile with Professional Teeth Whitening! Feeling great about your smile is important and for many, having a beautifully white, bright smile can give an added boost of selfconfidence. Over time, our teeth can become discolored due to several factors such as: taking certain medications, drinking dark colored beverages like coffee and tea, and even the normal aging process. When this happens, professional teeth whitening can be a great way for people to achieve the brighter, whiter smile they have always wanted. Due to the exceptional fit of custom made whitening trays, having teeth whitened professionally can help many people achieve a better result than with most over the counter whitening options. Your dental professionals are also able to get teeth their whitest by using the strongest, most effective whitening gels available.

Professional teeth whitening works when the active ingredient in the whitening/bleaching gel itself (typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) is chemically broken down, causing oxygen to enter the tooth enamel. This process allows the tooth structure to remain intact while at the same time effectively whitening dark or colored substances, making the teeth appear whiter and brighter. Professional whitening is a safe and convenient way to get amazing results in a short amount of time. While not everyone is a candidate for teeth whitening, most people are happy with the fantastic results they can achieve for their smile. The dental professionals at Parkcrest Dental Group are always happy to help with any questions you may have about professional teeth whitening!

Avoid Sugar & Carbs To Prevent Fatty Liver 90 million Americans are living with fatty liver. Research shows that it’s not fat that you need to stay away from. Carbs are to blame for the fat that accumulates in your belly and liver. When they are digested, carbohydrates are “reduced” to sugars rather than “turned into” sugars. Sugar is what triggers fat production in your liver. Most people with fatty liver are unaware of their condition. We also see a trend of children developing fatty liver at a younger age because of poor diet, which includes high-fructose drinks and foods. You need a healthy liver to combat toxins and chemicals. Keeping your liver healthy means you stay healthy, you don’t get sick, and you elevate your energy levels. There are several diet and lifestyle choices you can make to prevent and reverse fatty liver:

1. Cut sugar and the massive amount of carbs you ingest on a daily basis. 2. Get rid of high fructose corn syrup. 3. Eliminate white, processed flour and greatly reduce the amount of starch in your diet. 4. Choose healthy fats. Think Olive oil, avocados, and coconut oil. 5. Choose super foods. Think vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts. 6. Increase the amount of protein in your diet. Think nuts, seeds, eggs, fish, chicken. 7. Exercise Daily! Physical activity improves insulin resistance and reduces fatty liver. Supplements can help promote balance while your body is healing. Choosing the right supplement for you can be a challenge with different stores carrying various brands. Kare Health & Wellness carries Orthomolecular brand products which are available to purchase in office or over the phone. These pharmaceutical grade supplements are the best in the business as the quality of ingredients is unmatched in the supplement market.

Reflections on the Finer Points of Estate Planning On November 5th my mother was born and on November 5th, 87 years later, she passed away. In her final years she lived near my oldest sister who had the unfortunate duty of placing Mother in a nursing home after several attempts at assisted living resulted in Mother breaking her face (literally) twice after falling on the sidewalk and fracturing her hip while in assisted living. No one prepared my sister for the animosity that Mother had for being “confined against her will.” After her last hospitalization Mother graciously thanked everyone at the hospital for their service and then turned to my sister and said, “Except her.” I am truly grateful that, for once, I (the youngest child and the black sheep of the family) was not the recipient of Mother’s wrath although I volunteered that my sister make me the scapegoat as I was not the one being seen on a daily basis. As family members assembled in preparation for Mother’s death I also volunteered to assist transporting people to/from the airport and some other odd tasks but was turned down as well. After Mother’s death, one sister made the funeral arrangements, another arranged for the funeral meal and yet

another opened her home for the memorial service. As much as I wanted to participate and as much as I offered I was not afforded anything to do. Hence this note. If you are entrusted with the honor of caring for someone, as you diligently leave no stone unturned, remember: you may think you are doing a service by shouldering the burden alone but you may be excluding someone else from participating. So to, when making your own arrangements, consider writing a thank you note to the person caring for you at your worst to tell them how appreciated they are. And, if you happen to be that person, know that it is okay to feel conflicted. Often there is a sense of relief at one’s passing and a sense of guilt for being relieved. Finally, if you need help with the legalities, I will be there for you.

Delivering a baby at a hospital in the United States should be one of the safest places in the world to have a child, right? That’s what we’ve been told over the last century. With highly trained physicians and nurses along with easy access to the best advanced medical technology, why wouldn’t our hospitals have excellent outcomes? Surprisingly, studies show that the U.S. has the highest maternal death and infant mortality rates among developed countries, ranking a dismal 33rd among developed countries. More than a third of births in the U.S. are Cesarean sections. Studies show a correlation between unnecessary medical intervention and negative outcomes. Physician training is primarily based on the treatment of disease and medical complexities. Obstetricians are specialized surgeons and often turn to surgery as the solution for labor that is difficult or taking too long. Unnecessary procedures are often performed on low-risk healthy mothers with the intent of mitigating risk. But years of data doesn’t show compelling benefit to this model of care. High-level intervention without medical necessity begins to change the normal physiological processes and negatively affects the outcome of birth. Research shows that the midwifery model of care translates into significant benefits in both maternal and infant health. Europe is leading the U.S. in maternal and neonatal outcomes in childbirth, and over half of births in Europe are attended only by midwives as opposed to less than 10% of births in the U.S. The midwife model of care is typically centered around the belief that childbirth is a natural event best supported without unnecessary risky procedures and intervention – while balancing that with the understanding that medical intervention, even surgery, is necessary and important for a small percentage of women. The midwifery model

MO_MetroWomanJan_Feb2017.indd 12

of care also involves spending more time getting to know each patient’s unique medical situation and focusing on diet, exercise, and wellness. Prenatal appointments with a midwife are typically 30 minutes to an hour, versus 5 to 15 minutes with a physician. This personalized prenatal attention helps women understand their bodies and work to promote a healthy pregnancy and birth. Women are given the opportunity to understand the natural processes and learn how best to support their pregnancy.

“The U.S. has the highest maternal death and infant mortality rates among developed countries, ranking a dismal 33rd among developed countries” Family Birth and Wellness focuses on a complementary relationship between physicians and midwives, as both are necessary for the best outcomes. Utilizing the unique specialties and skills of each profession results in better care for women. By understanding what risk factors require specialized care by a physician and what risk factors can be managed with evidencebased out-of-hospital care, women are given the opportunity to treat potential issues before they become high-risk. With a proper focus on preventive care and wellness, out-of-hospital birth is an increasingly popular option for low-risk healthy mothers. Family Birth and Wellness offers a safe alternative to hospital birth – with an emphasis on promoting the natural birth process and letting women’s bodies work in a peaceful, supportive environment. Comfortable beds, encouraging food and drink during labor, relaxing birthing tubs, birth balls and birth stools, surround sound, lighting options, and soothing professional care all contribute the homey atmosphere conducive to supporting natural labor. For many women, this is the ideal setting for childbirth.
