Spokane's Wellness & Beauty Expo Owner and creative director, Ann Marie Danimus started Stubborn Girl Productions and the Wellness & Beauty Expo while she was still on dialysis waiting for a kidney in 2011. She had closed down her theater in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and came home to her mother here in Spokane in 2010, too sick to care for herself. Once financially stable with a life in LA and Mexico, she found herself two years later in a twin bed in her mom’s house with a broken knee from falling, and infection in her other leg, sick from dialysis with no theater, no condo, no money and failing kidneys- not the best conditions under which to turn 40 years old. Under the care of great local doctors she got on the list for a donor and after a chat with her Chiropractor about marketing & health fairs the idea for the first Wellness & Beauty Expo was born. Ann Marie received her kidney June 23, 2011. It took 3 1/2 years of dialysis and 17 surgeries, but Ann Marie’s health is thriving. Now in its third year, the Expo is ready to explode. “We had a modest start”, says Ann Marie, “but the Expo has grown every year and we have added so many amazing activities from last year to this year, the excitement is really palpable.” This year’s Wellness & Beauty Expo takes place June 20 & 21 with a VIP ticket event Fri. 5 PM to 9 PM for $30 including a drink ticket and hors d’oeuvres and Saturday general admission for $10, 10 AM to 5 PM at the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center. 6

An important part of the mission for the Wellness & Beauty Expo is to give back to the community. In addition to the fun highlights of the show, we have a variety of free health checks; non-profit educational and outreach booths; a food drive, Food4Beauty, where your donations to NW Harvest get you discounts on Mini-Spa passes; and a community fundraising program which allows local charities to sell tickets for the expo and receive $5 for every ticket. “It’s a win-win for the Expo and the charities to promote the show in this way,” says Ann Marie. Other highlights this year: the fashion show, the fitness model competition and the “Honey-Do” auction to support NW Harvest during the VIP event. “Recently I started a non-profit entity which will produce two conjoining events - the Healthy Kid’s Day Camp and Health Talks, a conference featuring speakers on a variety of wellness topics. In addition, the expo is affiliated with Miss Spokane and their first annual Fun(d) Run “Run for Miss Spokane" which takes place Sunday, June 22nd. Between the activities and vendors, the expo has a lot to offer this year. “Wellness is not about finding the absolute right way to a healthy balance in life, it is about finding the right balance for you.” In addition to event planning, Stubborn Girl Productions is a burgeoning film studio. Ann Marie is shooting a short this Spring about domestic violence and a fundraiser for her first feature film “Surviving Gringo Gulch” is June 26th at the Upper Glen.
