3 Benefits of Kids Engaging with Nature

The surge of technology ushered in the captivation of screen time. Whether it is the laptop, the smartphone, the gaming devices, or the the television - our children have steered away from outdoor hours. The casualty of this transition is their optimal health. The good news is that families can quickly rebound from this pattern and organically shift time to embrace a richer development. Consider park time. Our counties offer beautiful trails (any time of the year) to explore, exercise, and engage with family. Or enroll in a park program to spark interest and discover the world around us. Here are some benefits your children will enjoy: 1. Physical & Mental Benefits - Studies have shown that increased outdoor activity improves mood, increases gross motor skills, and improves vision. It also reduces depression, mental fatigue, and inflammation. 2. Improves Kid's Self-Confidence - Engaging with Nature can provide healing. Experiencing Nature offers peace, self-control, and self-discipline; creating a platform for a higher level of self-confidence. 3. Enhances Smartness - Nature exploration facilitates experiential learning, critical thinking, and analytical skill development; equipping children to thrive as teens and adults. Why not start small? Start with planning an outdoor activity monthly. Then, simply keep growing!

Hug More, Stress Less Whether circumstances are good or bad, exciting or stressful, there are several simple ways to improve emotional and mental fitness. As one example, sharing a hug with a loved one has been found to boost immune system responses, help fight disease and increase overall health, according to an article published by "The Guardian." Hugs increase serotonin, which is the body's natural antidepressant, can be a natural sleep aid and help reduce stress and anxiety. However, according to the article, hugs are on the decline. Among the reasons for this decline in hugging are busy schedules and the prevalence of technology extending the workday into time spent at home. It can be hard to focus on personal connections when work follows you home in your pocket. At times, it seems there are stronger connections to mobile devices than family members sitting in the same room. There is a simple solution, though. Get back to showing love through the simple act of hugging! 4

In the spirit of reducing stress and giving meaningful, memorable hugs, consider these tips: Keep it real. Avoid superficial hugs or giving a hug just out of habit. Instead, try focusing on the hug and giving it with purpose, as an expression of friendship. Squeeze hard, but not too hard. Take a breath. Once you are in the hug, pause for a moment and breathe. Just one breath. This is where you have the chance to squeeze a little longer. Go ahead and be a little vulnerable. In the moment, remember who you are hugging and why you are hugging him or her. This is a moment when the healing power of the hug can shine through, and a hug or squeeze is a sign of affection and trust. Let it go. Be sensitive to the movements of the person you are hugging and be willing to be the first to let go. Leave the embrace with a smile on your face, even in the hardest moments of life. Always let the person you are letting go of know you are happy.

Easy Ways to Spark Your Infant's Curiosity It's the way your baby gazes into your eyes as if pondering the meaning of life. It's how your infant grabs onto your shirt to play with the buttons and collar. It's your toddler stacking and sorting, as if addressing a problem that only he can solve. These are all examples of curiosity at work, and it's something all kids have in common. "Curiosity is an inherent characteristic that starts when we are babies and is important for brain development throughout life," says Rochelle Wainer, Ph.D., vice president of global insights at Baby Einstein, a leading baby product and toy brand. "For parents and caregivers, it's important to celebrate and support this curiosity as it's a trait that will help them lead a successful life. It helps cultivate many fundamental skills while building confidence and a love of learning." While kids may be naturally curious, you can help plant the seeds of success by nurturing their drive for curiosity. Wainer offers simple research-backed ideas for inspiring curiosity at home: 6

Stack the toy bin - Quality is more important than quantity for toys, and not all toys are created equal when it comes to inspiring curiosity and fostering development of critical skills. Read, read, read - It's never too early to start reading to your child. Reading is one of the most valuable ways to help children's language and imagination grow. Whether it's board books for babies or picture books for toddlers, try sitting down daily with your child and a good book. You can make reading an interactive activity for you and your little one by having them pick out the book and help flip the pages. Ask them about the things they see on the pages. Have them point to different pictures and feel different textures. Even if they can't speak yet, you'll be communicating and building language skills. "Encouraging your child's curiosity today will cultivate their confidence, creativity and discovery for tomorrow," says Wainer. "These are just some of the countless activities that can help to set your child up for success as they grow and develop throughout life."
