15 Years of Saving Lives “I could have never gone to Fayetteville for treatment without Komen’s help. Truly this grant saved my life and without it I would not have been able to see the doctor and get my treatments.” ---Komen Grant Recipient Ozark Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is celebrating 15 years of saving lives! Since 1998, the Ozark Affiliate has supported the mission of breast health by raising awareness and funds to support the PROMISE of saving lives and ending breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures. Fact: ALL women are at risk of getting breast cancer, which is why it is so important for women to get screened. When breast cancer is found early and confined to the breast, the 5 year survival rate is 98%. Since its inception, the Ozark Affiliate has awarded over $7 million dollars to local organizations and over $2 million to the Komen National’s Research and Awards program. This makes the Ozark Affiliate’s contribution to ending breast cancer forever to over $9 million! “Without Komen funds, I could not have gone to Highlands Oncology every Friday for a year for treatment.” ---Komen Grant Recipient The Ozark Affiliate serves 8 counties in Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley including; Benton, Boone, Carroll, Crawford, Madison, Newton, Sebastian and Washington and 2 counties in Missouri that includes Stone and Taney. We are committed to comprehensive breast health for ALL women in our 10 county service area through local grants, partnerships, education and support.

“Every woman has a right to access breast cancer screening tools that may save her life. Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have a right to fight the disease without the fear of bankruptcy.” ---The Breast Cancer Bill of Rights In 2012, the Ozark Affiliate awarded $750,000 to fourteen grantees to support local breast health programs provide education, screening and treatment services to those in greatest need. Grantee programs include; access to screening, treatment, genetic testing, emergency financial assistance, counseling, prescription assistance, gas cards, navigation assistance and many other services to those who are uninsured or underinsured that might not have access to these life saving services otherwise. “I had just finished radiation and was very weak at the Race for the Cure. I couldn’t do the walk, but the event was very encouraging. People reached out to me and made me feel special.” ---Komen Grant Recipient Please help support the Ozark Affiliate’s mission of saving lives by signing up for the 15th Anniversary Komen Ozark Race for the Cure which will be held at the Pinnacle Hills Promenade Mall on April 27, 2013. SUN PRECAUTIONS by Margaret Christensen, RN (ret), EdD
Summer will be here before you know it. Now is the time to look at the risk factors for all skin cancers. This includes melanoma. The sun without protection can cause skin cancer and skin wrinkling. Here are a few tips to allow you to have fun in the sun and decrease sun damage. 1. Apply sunscreen with a Sun Protection (SPF) of at least 15. This will provide protection from both ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B. Remember that you still need the protection on cloudy days. Reapply every couple of hours especially if you are near water, snow or sand. The reflection of the damaging rays can increase your chance of sunburn. 2. Wear clothes that protect you from the sun such as longsleeves, pants, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses. 3. Avoid tanning beds as they too can cause skin cancer. It is better to use a sunless self-tanning product. 4. See shade especially during the hours between 1- a.m. and 4 p.m. If your shadow is shorter than you are, look for some shade. 5. Eat a healthy diet that may include vitamin supplements so you still get your vitamin D. 6. Examine your body and if you notice anything changing, growing or bleeding on your skin, see a dermatologist. Skin cancer is very treatable when identified early.

Ozark Regional Transit (ORT) Ozark Regional Transit (ORT) is Northwest Arkansas’ Public Transit agency providing services to Benton County, Carroll County, Madison County and Washington County. ORT provides fixed-route services in the cities of Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale and Fayetteville. In addition to fixed-route services, ORT provides para-transit services. The para-transit service provided by ORT goes beyond what is required by ADA law and allows passengers living outside the fixed route areas to schedule rides if there is space available. Q: What is ADA Para-transit? A: ADA Para-transit is individual rides provided as a safetynet for those who have a disability and are functionally unable to access the fixed route bus service. Para-transit services are available within a ¾ mile radius of the established fixed route. Q: Do I need to apply for ADA eligibility? A: If you have a disability and live within ¾ mile of a fixed route, you need to submit a competed application within 30 days of scheduling your first ride to continue to use the ADA paratransit services. If you do not have a disability and live outside of the ¾ mile radius, you may schedule rides. However, these non-ADA qualifying rides are subject to space availability. Q: Where can I go using ORT’s para-transit service? A: Para-transit trips can be used to access shopping, medical or non-medical appointments, visits to friends or any other venues in the area served. Q: Where can I get more information? A: Contact Ozark Regional Transit at 479-756-5901 or visit our website at www.ozark.org Please say “I found it in NWA Seniors’ Out ‘n’ About
