Colorful Candle Ring:Supplies and Tools: 4 bags of decorative gourds 2 Styrofoam brand foam rings 1 package floral picks Spray paints: Purple Short Cuts; Gray Primer; Gloss Varnish; Krylon Purple, Island Splash and Peekaboo Blue Bottled paints in desired colors Paintbrush Glitter Glue Black gems filler Pillar candle Glass hurricane container 1 roll purple tulle Feather picks 1. Spray foam rings with Purple Short Cuts spray paint. Let dry.

2. Paint gourds in desired colors, some spray-painted, some brush-painted. If the gourd is orange or yellow, spray it with primer first, then the color. Otherwise, the orange or yellow will bleed through.

3. Break the ends off the floral picks if too long, dip both ends in glue then insert one end into the gourd and the other end into the Styrofoam ring, nesting closely together. Let dry.

4. Place glass hurricane inside the ring first to determine how to position the gourds. Remove the hurricane before proceeding to the next step.

5. Spray the finished ring with gloss varnish, sprinkle with glitter while still wet, and then spray again

with gloss varnish. Let dry.

6. Add small tufts of tulle to fill any holes between gourds and to give a softer look around vase.

7. Embellish with several feather picks; glue in place.

8. Return hurricane to center, fill with black gems. Insert pillar.

Pet parents do everything they can to ensure their dogs and cats are around as long as possible.

Try this recipe for Pumpkin Chocolate Chunk Pound Cake to kick your fall baking into full gear.

Pumpkin Chocolate Chunk Pound Cake 3 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened 1-3/4 cups firmly packed light brown sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1-1/4 cups 100 percent pure pumpkin 3/4 cup dark cocoa Candy Melts Candy, roughly chopped Glaze: 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional) 2 teaspoons milk Preheat oven to 325ºF. Prepare Dimensions Cascade Pan with vegetable pan spray with flour. In large bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg. In large bowl, beat butter and brown sugar with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition; beat in vanilla. Add flour mixture in three additions, alternating with pumpkin. Stir in chopped candy; mix until just combined. Pour into prepared pan. Bake 55-65 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 minutes; invert onto cooling grid and cool completely.

For glaze, stir together confectioners’ sugar, cinnamon and milk in small bowl. Drizzle over cooled cake.

Makes about 16 servings.

Easy Home Improvements to Benefit Indoor Air Quality Runny nose, itchy eyes and headache. These are just a few ailments suffered by homeowners with poor indoor air quality, potentially as a result of smoke, odors, dust or other contaminants.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, people spend up to 90 percent of their time indoors, where air quality can be two to five times more polluted than the air outside.

While asthma and allergy sufferers, children and the elderly are particularly sensitive to indoor air quality, everyone is impacted by it. Fortunately, a few simple and affordable home improvements can go a long way to benefit your home’s air.

Skip synthetic fragrances Despite their fresh scents, air fresheners and laundry products can emit dozens of chemicals.

The dragons are back! The Second Annual Montana Dragon

by Jill Seigmund Boat Festival will be held Sept. 7-8, 2013 on Flathead Lake. Last year’s inaugural festival was so successful that the producer of the event, the Kalispell Convention & Visitor Bureau, extended the event to two days this year to accommodate more teams.

Montana Dragon Boat Festival

More than 80 teams from Montana, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Nevada, California, Alberta, and British Columbia will take to the water to compete against one another in 46-foot-long dragon boats. Dragon boat racing is the 8th fastest growing sport in the world, with more than 50 million people in 63 countries participating. Teams of 20 paddlers, a drummer and steerer race in authentic Hong Kong-style boats. All ages, skill levels and physiques can paddle, requiring synchronicity and finesse more than power to win.

Sponsored by the Flathead Community Foundation, the Montana Dragon Boat Festival is staged out of the Flathead Lake Lodge in Bigfork. Flathead Lake is the largest fresh water lake west of the Mississippi River and many of last year’s out-of-state teams reported that it was the most scenic body of water on which they had ever raced.

According to legend, dragon boat racing originated in China more than 2,300 years ago when the patriot and poet Qu Yuan threw himself into the Mei Lo River upon learning of his kingdom’s devastation at the hands of a rival kingdom. Qu Yuan’s faithful followers raced out in their fishing boats to the middle of the river in a vain attempt to save him. They beat on drums and splashed their oars in the water, trying to keep the fish from his body and ward off evil spirits. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s festival will benefit Save a Sister, a collaborative initiative among Northwest Healthcare, North Valley Hospital, and the Flathead City-County Health Department to promote breast cancer awareness and raise funds to improve women’s access to screening mammography. Save A Sister also supports post-operative durable goods that often are not paid for by insurance. All funds stay in the local area.

Dragon boat racing is a spectator sport! Last year drew more than 3,000 spectators, and even more are expected this year. A variety of food and beverages will be available for purchase at the festival, and live musical performances will grace the day. The best time to make decisions regarding long-term care is well before it’s needed. An unexpected illness or injury may force you or a loved one into making hasty decisions. Long-term care is a set of services and supports for people who are unable to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). ADLs are self-care activities, such as getting in and out of bed, walking, bathing, dressing, eating, and bowel and bladder management. About 70 percent of people turning 65 can expect to need some kind of long-term care services as they age. Experts encourage everyone over age 50 to take the time, while you have it, to research options and make important choices.

Long-term care planning means developing a personal strategy now for how things should be handled later when you or a loved one is in need of care. Important considerations include the following:

Make Long-Term Care Plans Before They Are Needed

STAYING IN CHARGE An important part of long-term care planning is outlining how you would like things to be handled. Expressing preferences clearly about how any declines in ADLs should be handled, what financial resources are available, and who should provide needed care is a good way to retain control. All adults over age 18 should execute legal documents that appoint one or more individuals to make health care and financial decisions for them in the event they become unable to make decisions for themselves. An attorney can also prepare an advance care directive, which is a set of written instructions detailing what medical care you want or do not want.

HOUSING Those who would prefer to stay at home for as long as possible should make a plan to do so, and consider making modifications as needed. Typical modifications include adding wheelchair ramps, installing medical alert systems and adding handrails or safety grips. Ideally, your residence should maximize your ability to continue performing ADLs, and help you avoid a fall.

FAMILY CARE Unpaid family members are the most common source of long-term care help. But, they may not be able to provide all the care you need, or be there every hour of the day. If you intend to rely on family members for long-term care services be sure to involve them in your long-term care planning. Make sure they are willing and able to be caregivers for you.

PAID CARE As part of your long-term care plan, look into caregiving services in your area, including in-home care providers and elder daycare centers. Find out about elder shuttles, meals on wheels and other low-cost services offered in your community. Several types of housing come with support services for people who cannot fully take care of themselves due to aging and/or disability.

Take the time to familiarize yourself with the different types of facilities available in your area. Your local Area Agency on Aging office also offers a list of resources available to the elderly in your area.
