Happy Fall, Friends!

What a GORGEOUS time of year! I absolutely adore the fall season, don’t you? My crock pot comes out of the cupboard and my soup and stew recipes come out of hibernation. The smells of hot apple pie waft through my kitchen while my candles flicker on the countertop. My fireplace is beginning to sing me its song, one crackle at a time, while I place my pumpkins ever so strategically around my home. Eager plans are being made to host friends and family around a bon fire while hot cocoa and marshmallows are served fireside. Dorothy had it right. There truly is, “No place like home”.

I pray you, too, have plans to enjoy our beautiful fall season with your friends and family. Our community offers so many fabulous activities and volunteer opportunities. Try to take advantage of as many of these events as possible. I have found the best things in life are not things, but the moments we share with those we love.

Now, go have an adventure!

77 percent of Americans think the best seat in the house is at home in front of an HDTV, according to a recent survey.

Instead of heading to the stadium, keep the tailgate at home and throw a “Homegating” party. The ultimate Homegate is not only about the football game, it’s about the food.

Prep time: 15 minutes • Cook time: 30 minutes • Yield: 6 servings 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 1⁄2 pounds ground beef chuck

(16 ounce) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed

1

large onion, chopped

1

(12 ounce) can or bottle beer

2

garlic cloves, minced

1

(4 ounce) can diced green chilies

1

tablespoon ground cumin

1

1

(12 ounce) can diced tomatoes

tablespoon TABASCO brand Original Red Sauce

(16 ounce) cans pinto beans, drained and rinsed

⁄2 teaspoons salt

Shredded cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese, optional

Heat oil in 5-quart saucepot over medium heat. Add beef and cook until well browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. With a slotted spoon, remove to bowl. Add onion and garlic to drippings remaining in skillet; cook over medium heat until tender, about 5 minutes. Return meat to saucepot; stir in cumin. Cook 1 minute. Stir in diced tomatoes with liquid, pinto beans, red kidney beans, beer, green chilies, Tabasco Sauce and salt. Heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 20 minutes to blend flavors, stirring occasionally. Serve with cheese, if desired.

GREETINGS! FALL colors are upon us full time now and folks LOVE the short colorful drive down Swan Hwy 83 to one of the Flathead’s perennial favorite restaurants ‘Echo Lake Cafe’, 1195 Swan Hwy 83 near Bigfork, which has been in business at the same location since 1960! Bob & Christi Young bought the building in 1996 and set out to totally remodel it with a theme & menu similar to their successful ‘Firesign Cafe’ in Lake Tahoe while keeping the same old Montana feel. The finished building reopened in 1999 and since then Echo Lake Cafe has been voted “Best Breakfast in the Flathead” for 13 of the last 15 years, plus many other accolades & honors such as a 4.5/5 rating on Trip Advisor.

“ELC” is open for breakfast & lunch with full menu served from 6:30 am to 2:30 pm. I LOVE THAT! They also serve “Southern Grits” thanks to two southerners both named “Bill” (wink smile!) insisting years ago that they would sell! Sure enough they sell a LOT of grits! They also make their own “Glutenfree” bread and serve locally grown foods & ingredients when possible.

On an early afternoon visit with my pretty blonde and our house guest from WA state, we had a most pleasant all-around dining experience! We sat outside on the deck next to the aspen trees in a tranquil & relaxing setting while viewing the beautiful Swan Mountains range. Our waitress Tammy has been on staff for 15 years and her knowledge and professionalism was tops! The front-end manager Deb has also been there 15 years. The ELC menu is as extensive and varied as any I’ve seen around here. Be sure to check out the “Daily Specials” board for both breakfast & lunch specials.

Our guest had the “Echo Lake Crepes” ($9.95): two eggs scrambled with green onions, sauteed mushrooms & jack cheese, wrapped in two crepes & topped with Hollandaise sauce, served with home-fried potatoes. She described them as “light with a perfect hollandaise sauce”. My choice was one of my all-time ELC favorites, Homemade “Corned Beef Hash & Eggs” ($9.85) with a side bowl of GRITS ($3). Bread choices with breakfast include a giant homemade “Muffin of the Day”, but only if you get their early enough! My pretty blonde chose the “Teriyaki Chicken Wrap” ($7.95): Leaf lettuce, grated carrots, avocado, diced tomato, shredded Cheddar cheese, Teriyaki Chicken and a little

ranch dressing, wrapped in a flour tortilla.

Served with chips & salsa, it is big enough to share. She LOVED it!

A few other of my highly recommended personal ELC favorites you should try are the Cajun Ortega Burger, Blueberry or Banana Pancakes, Smoked Salmon Omelette, Kielbasa Scramble, Joe’s Special, Huevos Rancheros, Breakfast Burrito & their famous Veggie Potatoes.

Check out the entire menu at www. echolakecafe.com. Seriously folks, I’ve never been disappointed with a meal at this restaurant and I know many locals that eat there almost daily. So whether it’s “colorful” outside, all green or all white (Yikes!) head on over to Echo Lake Cafe and tell them you saw it in Seniors’ Scoop. Cut one color of yarn into 24 60-inch pieces. Rubber band eight pieces of yarn together to create a section.

2. Clip three sections to skirt hanger and braid together.

3. Cut second color of yarn into 24 60-inch pieces. Rubber band eight pieces of yarn together to create a section.

4. Clip three sections to skirt hanger next to previous braid. Braid new braid together, pulling one side of new braid through loops of first braid so they start connecting.

5. Repeat steps until this has been done with five braids total, making braids on end a different color than middle three braids.

6. Tie off ends of braids with suede cord and trim down to be same length.

Understanding Headache Pain, Treatments Whether it’s a mild stress headache or a fullblown migraine, those who regularly battle headaches are continually looking for safe and effective remedies to alleviate the pain as quickly as possible. The Mayo Clinic describes a headache as “pain in any region of the head.

Headaches may occur on one or both sides of the head, be isolated to a certain location, radiate across the head from one point, or have a vise-like quality. A headache may be a sharp pain, throbbing sensation or dull ache.

Headaches may appear gradually or suddenly, and they may last less than an hour or for several days.”

Types of headaches Understanding what kind of headache you’re experiencing and what may have caused it can go a long way toward finding the ideal treatment, whether with heat and cold therapies such as those provided by Thermal-Aid, other natural remedies or medication.

Causes of headaches are as varied as the aches themselves. Migraines and tension headaches are among the common types of primary headaches – those that relate to pain sensitivity areas of your head but do not signal a potential underlying disease. Other indicators may signal the need to schedule a doctor’s appointment, although not as urgently as if you are experiencing the symptoms above. These include an increase in headache frequency or severity; pain that does not improve after taking over-the-counter medication; and pain that affects your normal activities, such as working or sleeping.

Home treatment options Relieving your headache pain at home depends on the type of headache you’re experiencing.

Some headaches can be relieved by over-the-counter medications, but numerous natural remedies can also be effective, without the potential side effects of drugs.

One example is heat or cold therapy, applied to your head or neck area. To serve, top each with dollop of yogurt and Halloweenthemed sprinkles.

cup Musselman’s Apple Butter cup Musselman’s Apple Cider Vinegar cup brown sugar tablespoons minced garlic tablespoons whole grain Dijon mustard teaspoon salt teaspoon pepper medium apples, cored and chopped medium onion, chopped boneless pork chops

In small bowl, whisk together apple butter, vinegar, brown sugar, garlic, Dijon mustard, salt and pepper. Place chopped apples and onions in slow cooker.

Add pork chops and pour apple butter mixture over top. Cook on low for five to six hours covered. Shred pork with two forks in cooker, and let meat marinate on low in sauce for 20 minutes uncovered. Serve warm over rice or mashed potatoes.

Servings: 8

tablespoons butter cup brown sugar tablespoon maple syrup cup chopped pecans (divided) package (8 ounces) refrigerated crescent sheet cup Musselman’s Apple Butter cup raisins (optional)

Preheat oven to 375°F. Coat 8-inch square baking dish with cooking spray. In small sauce pan over medium heat, combine butter, brown sugar and maple syrup. Stir until melted and pour into baking dish. Sprinkle evenly with 1/3 cup pecans. On cutting board, unroll tube of crescent dough into a rectangle (seal seams and perforations). Spread apple butter evenly over dough surface and sprinkle with additional pecans and optional raisins. Starting on long edge of dough, roll tightly, jelly roll fashion.

With serrated knife, cut roll into 16 equal slices. Place each slice cut side down on the glaze in the baking dish. Bake 18 to 20 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown. Remove from oven and immediately invert onto serving platter.

Allow to cool five to 10 minutes before serving.

Genealogy 101

By Jill Seigmund Beverley Zierow was in the 10th grade when she took an interest in learning about her ancestors. Her history teacher assigned the class to research and write about their families. Zierow, who grew up in Minnesota and whose maiden name is Johnson, learned that she was not of Norwegian or Swedish descent. As it turned out, her paternal grandfather was British and arrived in America aboard the Mayflower. Her mother was a first-generation American, her family hailing from Slovakia since the 1600s.

“But my deep love of family history really started when my father-in-law died in 1980 and my husband and I realized our three-year-old son would be the last to carry on our family name, Zierow, here in America,” she said. Without the ability to query her father-in-law, Beverley began searching for information in other ways. “I’ve actively been doing genealogy for over 33 years now and can trace the Zierow family in Germany to the 1700s,” she said.

Beverley has been teaching others how to conduct genealogic research for almost 20 years. This month she is teaching a Senior Seminar at Flathead Valley Community College for students ages 65 and up. “Preserving Your Family History” is scheduled for three consecutive Fridays, October 3 – 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. Students can register by calling 756-3832. The fee is $44, and no prior genealogy experience is required.

According to Beverley, anyone who is interested in researching their ancestors should begin by interviewing family members. “You may be able to find out birth, marriage and death information from records, but only people, not the courthouse documents you will find, can tell you that Grandma baked the best chocolate chip cookies and Grandpa loved to fish. You can have your pedigree chart traced for 10 generations, but if you can’t personalize the people, they are just names and dates,” she said.

Another good resource for budding genealogists is the Flathead County Genealogical Society (www.flatheadgenealogy.org), which offers monthly presentations. “Other genealogists can offer encouragement when you hit that brick wall, and can listen and celebrate with you when you finally find that record you’ve been seeking for 20 years,” said Beverley.

She cites Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org as two exceptional online resources.

If accessed through the Family History Center at the Latter Day Saints church, there is no fee to use Ancestry.com. The public can access the LDS’s FamilySearch.org for no cost, whether using a public or private computer. And lastly, the Family History Center library located at the LDS church in Kalispell is open to the public for no charge Tuesday – Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information or to speak with a librarian there, call 752-5446.

Beverley has taken it upon herself to learn the craft of writing so she can record her family history in entertaining stories. “I have written books on my parents, am halfway done with my in-laws and have started on myself and my husband,” she said. Her stories are a gift to her children, grandchildren, and generations to come.
