Happy Fall, Friends!

I LOVE this time of year, don’t you?

The crisp morning air, the beautiful colors of the leaves, hot apple pie, fresh coffee, warm bread, hayrides, and the beginning of the holiday season! During this fabulous time of year, the days are shorter and the hustle and bustle of the activities and appointments comes to a halt a little sooner. We can all slow down just a little bit and prepare for our holiday gatherings as we sit by a crackling fire and curl up with a good book.

Our family has always enjoyed visiting the pumpkin patches and picking out the largest, roundest, most welcoming pumpkins we can find for our home and front porch. I’m so thankful that our son enjoys playing the guitar and our girls enjoy singing. We will gather around our fire pit and roast marshmallows and sing a chorus or two as we talk a “little about nothing” and sometimes “a lot about something”.

I hope you enjoy this very special time of year with your friends and family.

Volunteering Builds Communities, Improves Lives

The opportunities to help your community are endless. It’s as easy as linking your talents with causes you are passionate about or that have affected you personally.

With so many charitable causes and organizations, it’s easy to find a volunteer opportunity that’s perfect for you. According to research conducted by the Corporation for National and Community Service, those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, reported more self-worth and had fewer cases of depression. And the positive benefits don’t end there. Volunteering also promotes the feelings of accomplishment and personal fulfillment rarely found in other activities. Though the list of volunteer activities is vast, here are a few causes that can be found in most communities: • Give blood: Due to accidents or illnesses, thousands of people are in need of blood each day. Organize or participate in a blood drive at your church, social group or school. You can also volunteer at the local bank within your community.

• Build homes: Do you enjoy using your hands and being outdoors?

Organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity, utilize volunteer labor, material donations and monetary support to build and rehabilitate houses for families in need of decent shelter. To support this cause, M&M’S Brand has created the M’Prove America movement, and will provide more than $500,000 to help build Habitat homes across the country. The brand is also rallying Americans to donate their time and talents to help build Habitat homes.

• Adopt a family: Natural disasters wreak havoc on communities, destroying homes and lives. Many organizations help families who’ve lost their homes and belongings by providing assistance with clothing, personal hygiene products and other necessities to get them back on their feet. Such organizations also look for assistance during the holidays to ensure children and parents aren’t forgotten during the season of giving. Get a group of friends together and consider adopting a family in need.

• Help at food bank: Hunger has become a national epidemic, touching lives in almost every region of America. Many volunteer opportunities are available for this worthy cause. Consider helping at a food kitchen to serve the hungry directly, box up food shipments for other banks or start a food drive competition with co-workers to see who can give the most.

A simple online search will point you in the direction of the perfect volunteer opportunities that fit your lifestyle. A WALK BACK IN TIME

by Jill Seigmund With its cooler temperatures and colorful leaves, October is a great time of year to take a stroll through historic downtown Kalispell. The Kalispell Downtown Association and the Kalispell Business Improvement District are the cosponsors of the production and publication of an informative brochure detailing 60 historic sites. “The Self-Guided Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Kalispell” can be picked up at the Visitor Center inside the old Great Northern Railroad Depot building or downloaded from www.downtownkalispell. com free of charge.

The self-guided tour begins at the Depot and loops around Main Street and First Avenue East between Center and Fourth Streets. Built in 1899, the Depot is an appropriate place to begin the tour. Although Great Northern would eventually move its main line north to Whitefish, the railroad had significant influence in shaping Kalispell. Today the Depot remains a fixture of downtown Kalispell.

Stops two and three take walkers to the old MacIntosh Opera House, built in 1896 by John MacIntosh. He and a partner added the building to the north in 1903. Today rather than taking in a show, visitors to the old Opera House can purchase cowboy boots at Western Outdoor or enjoy a milkshake at Norm’s News.

Continuing south along Main Street, the tour stops at the Kalispell Hotel, built in 1911. Today it is the elegant Kalispell Grand Hotel and still houses antique furniture and fixtures, giving guests the sense they’ve stepped back in time (although they can expect to pay more than the $2 per night guests paid in 1911).

It wouldn’t have been a railroad town without a bar. The building that now houses Sassafras was originally The Brewery Saloon. When it opened in 1892, the Brewery Saloon was described by the Inter Lake as “one of the neatest and best furnished bar rooms in the state,” with new oak furniture purchased from Brunswick & Balk Collender.

“The Self-Guided Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Kalispell” contains detailed descriptions of Kalispell’s first days, its residents, and the commercial and social activities of the time. Black and white photos of the buildings from the private collection of an early family accompany the descriptions, making it easy to follow along without a tour guide.

Before winter sets in, put on a comfortable pair of shoes and take a walk back in time. You’ll be amazed at what still remains of Kalispell’s earliest days.

Autumn Fun for the Whole Family Fall brings with it beautiful weather, cool breezes and colorful foliage. Celebrate all of the beauty, fun and flavors of the season with your family. Take a hike, visit a pumpkin patch, plan a party or spend the afternoon baking autumn-inspired treats. Here are a few fun ideas to enjoy fall with your family: •

One traditional fall favorite is apple butter. Crisp apples are cooked slowly until the sugars caramelize into a deep, rich flavor. That’s also the way Musselman’s makes it. Spread it on toast, pancakes or other baked goods. It is also a great way to add a new flavor to your favorite, familiar dishes. Every autumn, nature puts on a brilliant color show in many parts of the country. The beautiful weather, colorful background and traditional activities are the perfect excuse to embrace fall fun with your family.

Heavenly Sweet Potato Casserole Servings: 8 2 pounds (3 large) sweet potatoes, peeled, cubed 3/4 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter 2 eggs 1/4 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup melted butter 1/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup pecans, chopped, optional 2 tablespoons butter, melted Place potatoes in medium saucepan; add about 1 inch of water. Cover and cook 10 to 15 minutes or until tender. Drain very well. Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 1 1/2-quart casserole with cooking spray. Mix apple butter, eggs, cream, honey and 1/4 cup melted butter. Add potatoes and beat by hand or with electric mixer until mashed and well mixed. Spoon into casserole.

Mix brown sugar, pecans and remaining butter in small bowl. Sprinkle over potatoes. Bake 20 to 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly.

Deliciously Scary Treats for Goblins and Ghouls of All Ages This Halloween, throw a wickedly wonderful fete for family and friends. With help from the Wilton entertaining experts, you’ll have all the tricks to treat your guests to a spooky celebration that will leave them howling with delight. Try this recipe for a Tower of Horror Treats for a spook-tacular Halloween party.

Skull Cakes: Makes 8 skulls 4 cups all-purpose flour 2 2/3 cups granulated sugar 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves Pinch ground nutmeg 1-1/3 cups vegetable oil 4 eggs 2 cups applesauce Buttercream icing Preheat oven to 325ºF. Prepare Dimensions Mini Skull Pan with vegetable pan spray. In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cloves and nutmeg. In small bowl, whisk together oil, eggs and applesauce. Add to dry ingredients, stirring until well combined.

Fill each cavity about 2/3 full with 1/3 cup batter. Reserve remaining batter. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 15 minutes. Remove to cooling grid and cool completely. Bake remaining batter as above. To assemble, cut the domes off of fronts and backs of skulls and sandwich with buttercream icing.

Cookie Bones: 1 1-1/2 1 1-1/2 1/2 3 1

Makes about 3 dozen cookies

cup (2 sticks) butter, softened cups granulated sugar egg teaspoons vanilla extract teaspoon almond extract (optional) cups all-purpose flour teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly spray Bones Cookie Pan cavities with vegetable pan spray. In large bowl, beat butter and sugar with electric mixer at medium speed until well blended. Beat in egg and extracts; mix well. Combine flour and salt; add to butter mixture. Beat until well blended. Press dough into prepared pan cavities, filling 2/3 full. Bake 9 to 10 minutes or until light brown around edges. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Turn pan over; lightly tap pan to remove cookies. Cool completely on cooling grid.

Using disposable decorating bag, pipe melted black candy face details on skull cakes; chill 5 to 10 minutes or until set. Attach candy eyeballs to skulls with dots of melted candy. If desired, brush Color Dust highlights on candy-covered bones and skulls.

Using melted white candy, secure four decorated skull cakes to cake base or serving platter, hold until set; insert decorated bone cookies between cakes. Add second row of skulls, positioning between the skulls below and securing with melted candy; hold until set. Add bone cookies between skulls. 4 bags of decorative gourds 2 Styrofoam brand foam rings 1 package floral picks Spray paints: Purple Short Cuts; Gray Primer; Gloss Varnish; Krylon Purple, Island Splash and Peekaboo Blue Bottled paints in desired colors Paintbrush Glitter Glue Black gems filler Pillar candle Glass hurricane container 1 roll purple tulle Feather picks

Spray foam rings with Purple Short Cuts spray paint. Let dry.

Paint gourds in desired colors, some spray-painted, some brush-painted. If the gourd is orange or yellow, spray it with primer first, then the color. Otherwise, the orange or yellow will bleed through.

Break the ends off the floral picks if too long, dip both ends in glue then insert one end into the gourd and the other end into the Styrofoam ring, nesting closely together. Let dry.

Place glass hurricane inside the ring first to determine how to position the gourds. Remove the hurricane before proceeding to the next step.

Spray the finished ring with gloss varnish, sprinkle with glitter while still wet, and then spray again with gloss var¬nish. Let dry.

Add small tufts of tulle to fill any holes between gourds and to give a softer look around vase.

Embellish with several feather picks; glue in place.

Return hurricane to center, fill with black gems. Insert pillar.

One can get a “good” hamburger at many establishments around the Flathead Valley—some are even “great” hamburgers; but if you want an AWESOME hamburger, which are billed as “Montana’s Best Burgers”, try HOP’S Downtown Grill, 121 Main St. in Kalispell!

We just had 2 of their 8 choices of “American Kobe Beef Burgers & Homemade Chips, a fresh ground, half-pound premium steak burger on a fresh-baked bun.”

I had the Creole Burger with two huge fried shrimp, brie & creole pepper sauce ($13.95). My pretty blonde had the Teriyaki Burger with grilled pineapple & sautéed onions ($10.95). We were 100% impressed with the quality, freshness & taste of these “Gourmet” burgers. I personally liked that the bun was freshbaked & not soggy from the meat! The couple at the table next to us was raving about their meals of 2 of the 3 “Extreme Burgers”: the Wild Boar Burger, Mission Mountain Buffalo Burger & Spring Brook Ranch Yak Burger (all $14.95 each).

For an adult beverage to go along with your meal, HOP’S has 100 choices of craft beers & regional wines. The dessert choices were to die for as we shared the “Orange Butter-Cream Torte” ($6.95). Take our word for it; “WOW” would be an understatement regarding portion size and taste!

HOP’s has a very classy and intimate atmosphere. It’s a full-service restaurant with superb Chef’s Specialities and Daily Specials. Owner/Chef Doug Day was recently voted the Flathead Valley’s “BEST CHEF 2013” in the Daily Inter Lake Reader Poll. Our server Erin was very personable and accommodating with her superb service.

Stop in to HOP’s soon and tell them you saw it in Seniors’ Scoop. They open at 5:00pm Mon.-Sat. We suggest getting there early or you may have to wait a while to be seated... but it’s worth the wait!
