Happy Love Month!

Webster defines Love in this way: 1. tenderness, fondness, predilection, warmth, passion, adoration. 1, 2. Love, affection, devotion all mean a deep and enduring emotional regard, usually for another person. Love may apply to various kinds of regard: the charity of the Creator, reverent adoration toward God or toward a person, the relation of parent and child, the regard of friends for each other, romantic feelings for another person, etc. Affection is a fondness for others that is enduring and tender, but calm. Devotion is an intense love and steadfast, enduring loyalty to a person; it may also imply consecration to a cause. 2. liking, inclination, regard, friendliness. 15. like. 16. adore, adulate, worship.

I’m sure different people come to mind as you read this detailed description of “love”. What a precious thing it is to experience the love of others and to give love back to those precious lives who impact our heart and soul so deeply. To love and to be loved is one of the most important things in this world. I am so blessed to have the love of my God, endearing parents, devoted grandparents, loyal husband, precious children and very dear friends.

cup all-purpose flour cup cocoa powder teaspoon baking powder teaspoon baking soda teaspoon salt tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter, softened cup firmly-packed brown sugar egg teaspoon pure vanilla extract cup buttermilk cup peanut butter, chocolate fudge ice cream topping or cherry pie filling containers (14 ounces each) Chocolate or Vanilla Icing Glaze (optional) Jumbo hearts sprinkles (optional)

Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare 24 cavity bite-sized heart dessert shell pan with Cake Release pan coating.

In large bowl, combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

In large bowl, beat butter and sugar with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla extract; beat until well combined. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk in three additions, beating until just combined. Spoon one tablespoon batter into each pan cavity.

Bake 9-11 minutes or until tops of cakes spring back when touched. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Cool completely on cooling grid.

To decorate, place cakes on cooling grid with cookie pan below. Pipe 1/2 teaspoon peanut butter, chocolate fudge or cherry pie filling into shell; fill only to top of cavity. If desired, warm glaze according to package instructions; carefully pour over shell and tap pan to smooth. If desired, add jumbo hearts sprinkles.

The Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth is coming to Kalispell. The Kalispell Mini Maker Faire is scheduled from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22nd at Flathead Valley Community College. Sponsored by FVCC and Flathead County Library, Kalispell Mini Maker Faire will be Montana’s first Maker Faire.

“What in the heck is a Maker Faire?” you might be asking.

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists and students. All of these makers come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and share what they have learned through interactive exhibits, hands-on demonstrations, and informative presentations. The original Maker Faire event was held in San Mateo, California in 2005. Just seven years later, the San Mateo Maker Faire featured more than 800 makers with nearly 110,000 people in attendance. The World Maker Faire in New York has grown in three years to more than 500 makers with 55,000 attendees. Community-driven, independently organized Mini Maker Faires, such as the Kalispell Mini Maker Faire, are now being produced around the world.

The Kalispell Mini Maker Faire will feature makers who can demonstrate a unique skill or craft, show a finished piece of work and explain it, and/or teach people a skill. From basket weaving to robotics, from home brewing to 3D printing, the makers of Northwest Montana specialize in the primitive to the high-tech.

Think you might be a maker? Makers like to tinker and “do it themselves.”

They think outside of the box and take pride in coming up with new twists and spins on the familiar. Makers like giving new life to old things, and they enjoy teaching others how to be makers. It wasn’t so long ago in our country’s history, where everyone was a maker by necessity.

Simple Change Can Save Costly Engine Repairs The sticker on your car’s windshield serves as a constant reminder that every car eventually has to be taken to get its oil changed. Go too long and a bright red indicator light will also start demanding attention. If you’re ever tempted to ask if all of those oil changes are really necessary, consider the important work oil performs for your engine.

Keep your motor running: Motor oil lubricates and cools the moving parts in your car’s engine.

Without clean oil your engine’s metal-on-metal components can grind against each other, causing extensive wear. So, not having clean oil and the proper amount of oil can have serious consequences.

Take time for a change: Extended oil change intervals are the number one cause of sludge and varnish build up. Motor oil degrades over time due to heat, pressure and contamination. Check the owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended oil change interval for your vehicle and remember, oil is the lifeblood of your engine.

Inspect for potential problems: Most cars are designed for easy oil change maintenance so if you don’t change your own oil, take this product to your professional service installer. Those who like to do the job themselves should always pop open the hood and inspect the car for fluid levels and leakage, cracked or frayed belts and bulging hoses. Visit any reputable auto repair garage or lube shop to have all of these inspections and maintenance tasks performed during your car’s oil change. They’ll also dispose of the dirty, used oil for you.

Hearts Love Watermelon

Beyond adding color and variety to your family’s diet, watermelon has other great benefits. Here are a couple of these heart-healthy reasons: • Fresh watermelon is certified by the American Heart Association’s Heart Checkmark program as being low in saturated fat and cholesterol.

• Watermelon is the primary source of an amino acid called citrulline found in fruits and vegetables. Citrulline can help maintain blood flow within the heart and cardiovascular function.

Lips and Love Basket

1 to 2 long, oval-shaped seedless watermelons Cutting board Green dry erase marker Kitchen and paring knives Melon baller Assorted cookie cutters (X, O and heart shapes), if desired Wooden skewers Toothpicks Strawberries Fruits to make fruit salad filling Large bowl and spoon Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. On cutting board, place watermelon on its side and cut off 1/4 to 1/2 inch from stem end being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind to provide sturdy base. With marker, draw scalloped line around width of middle of watermelon.

Use paring knife to cut along marker line, then separate the two halves. Use melon baller to scoop out watermelon for your base. Cut top half of watermelon in half and use dry erase marker to draw large set of lips on one half. Use paring knife to cut out lips. Once you have general shape, carefully carve away rind. Use paring knife to shape lips into more finished look. Cut remaining 1/4-inchthick slices and cut hearts, X’s, O’s or other shapes, discarding rind. Attach lips to top of base using wooden skewers and toothpicks. Slice strawberries lengthwise into 1/4-inch slices, keeping strawberry tops on for decoration, if desired. Attach slice of strawberry with green top to center of each scallop using toothpick. Use rest of strawberry slices in fruit salad for fruit bowl. Place fruit bowl on serving platter, fill with fruit salad and garnish with slices of fruit cut into hearts, X’s and O’s, if desired.

Living with diabetes? Watch your mouth!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people with diabetes are two times more likely to develop gum disease. In fact, about one-third of people with diabetes have severe gum disease. High blood glucose levels impair the body’s ability to heal from oral infections and uncontrolled diabetes can make treating gum disease more difficult, according to the American Diabetes Association. The Association is joining with Colgate to launch a new “Watch Your Mouth!” campaign to help raise awareness surrounding the often over-looked link between oral health and diabetes. Here are some tips to help you live well with diabetes: •

Watch your mouth! Begin to develop healthy oral care habits, like brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist regularly. Research shows that brushing twice a day can help improve gum health in as little as four weeks.*

Know your risks. The American Diabetes Association lists the common risk factors for diabetes as being 45 or older, being overweight, not exercising regularly, having high blood pressure and being a part of certain racial and ethnic groups.

Visit your dentist. While your doctor and certified diabetes educator play an important role in helping with your diabetes, so does your dentist. If you don’t see a private-practice dentist, you can visit dental schools that provide services at a fraction of the cost to help you keep your mouth healthy.

Simple Tips Keep Clutter at Bay If yours is like the average American household, you have amassed a collection of unorganized stuff, tucked away in piles or behind closed doors to deal with “later.”

Establishing good organization habits and creating proper storage areas can transform that chaos now and set the stage for less mess in the future. Following are some simple tips to help make your apartment or home clutter free, and get you started with some new habits to keep disorganization at bay.

1. Don’t buy things you don’t need.

Living clutter free gives you a better perspective of what you have, so you don’t make unnecessary purchases, which can be costly and only add to the clutter in your home. Be wary of accumulating “aspirational clutter” — things you plan to use someday, but never quite get around to using. Though tempting, also avoid freebies and gifts with purchase that you don’t really need. Remember, clutter creates more clutter.

2. Create zones. In other words, make a space for everything. Your entryway can become a repository, so sort mail immediately (recycle what you don’t need), hang coats rather than draping them on available furniture and use a shoe bin or tray to organize pairs you wear frequently. In the bedroom closet, use vertical space to create additional storage with organizing units.

Perhaps the only thing that would top an evening of fine dining at Showthyme Restaurant, 548 Electric Ave. in Bigfork would be to attend a play, concert or special event afterwards next door at Bigfork Center for Performing Arts (aka Bigfork Summer Playhouse). www. bigforktheater.org Known throughout the Northwest as one of the top food and wine experiences in the region, the moderately-priced Showthyme menu & daily specials feature exceptional & inventive American-style dishes that display the award-winning talent of long-time chef/owner Blu Funk. The building once housed the local bank and provides a setting of casual elegance with antique brick walls, local fine art, and a stamped-tin ceiling. Dining is also available downstairs in “The Vault” which houses an extensive wine cellar.

My pretty blonde and I had a friend visiting from Kirkland, WA who joined us for dinner at Showthyme. Host & co-owner Rose Funk greeted us and was very accommodating. Our server Tiffany was so wonderful, attentive and very knowledgeable on all menu items and wines.

After beverage orders and being served a basket of hot bread, we started with an appetizer of ‘Fresh “Taylor Beds” Manila Clams Steamed with Sherry, Garlic and Butter’-$12.95. All the yummy clams plus all juice was soon GONE! ‘Nuf said!

I started with the ‘Showthyme House Salad: Mixed Greens Tossed with a Dijon Mustard’-$4.00. My entree’ choice was the ‘Fresh Planked King Salmon “A Northwest Tradition.” Roasted on an Alder Plank and Sauced with Lemon Caper Dill Aioli Served with Spiced Rice’-$23.00. My pretty blonde and our friend chose the ‘Filet Mignon Sauced with Red Wine Reduction & Béarnaise Butter Served with Potato of the Day’ (Garlic Mashed)-$28.00. This must be the most popular entree’ as I noticed many around us had ordered it including all 4 at the table next to us. It was truly exceptional... tender & delicious.

We shared my favorite Showthyme “dessert-to-die-for”... the ‘Huckleberry Ice Cream Crepe Floating on Huckleberry Sauce’-$6.00. Scrumptious & a “Show Stopper” for sure!

Do Your Homework Before Cutting Gluten In the battle to get leaner and healthier, people have been targeting many different food groups over the years, from fats to carbohydrates. Now, experts are weighing in on whether or not grains might be a culprit in the growing prevalence of certain diseases, including obesity and dementia.

Conflicting opinions on carbohydrates: “Carbohydrates are awful for the brain,” said Dr. David Perlmutter, neurologist and author of the new book “Grain Brain.” “Eating carbohydrate foods increases blood sugar levels, which causes inflammation and can lead to dementias.”

However, a recent study conducted by the University of Nebraska showed that eating whole grains, such as barley and brown rice, actually helped decrease inflammation.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” O’Neil said. “A study by Centers for Disease Control researchers projected that if grains were eliminated then diets would be extremely low in folic acid, iron and B vitamins.

The experts weigh-in: Gluten found in wheat, barley, rye and in oats processed in the same mills as those grains, cannot be digested by those with celiac disease (CD) and can affect the health of those who are gluten intolerant.

Pump Up Your Morning with Protein at Breakfast We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but what’s the key to making the most out of the morning meal? It could be protein. From building strong muscles to keeping bones healthy, there’s good reason to include protein in your morning meal. Breakfast is typically lower in protein than other meals, but it’s a particularly important time to include protein in your diet. The average breakfast only has 10-12 grams of protein-far from the 20-30 grams per meal that’s recommended. 1,2 One easy way to help close the gap is to include an 8-ounce glass of milk. Whether lowfat or fat free, milk is a breakfast powerhouse, packed with nine essential nutrients, including eight grams of high-quality protein to help start your day off right.

What’s more, not all protein sources are created equal. Milk protein is a complete protein, while most plant proteins may be missing some of the building blocks your body needs.

Including milk at breakfast can help you be sure you’re meeting the recommended amount of protein and milk each day.

Hearty Oatmeal with Strawberries, Dried Cherries and Almonds Oatmeal is a classic favorite, and paired with dried cherries, almonds and cinnamon, this recipe invokes the aromas and flavors of the holidays. Add 1/2 a banana and glass of milk to round out your plate for a breakfast with 25 grams of protein. Makes: 2 servings 1 3/4 cup lowfat or fat free milk 1 cup old-fashioned or quick cooking oats (not instant) 1 teaspoon brown sugar 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 cup sliced strawberries 1/4 cup dried cherries 3 tablespoons toasted sliced almonds (3/4 ounce) Combine milk, oatmeal, brown sugar, and cinnamon in saucepan; bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring often to prevent boiling over. Cook until thickened; divide between two serving bowls and top with strawberries, cherries, and almonds; serve immediately.
