It’s August, Friends! Can you believe it? Where has the year gone? The summer months are flying by and the kiddos are picking out lunch boxes, backpacks, and shiny apples for their teachers. (Do kids do that anymore?)

Summer Loving Strawberry & Watermelon Salad Servings: 4

Sherry Vinaigrette

2 Cups Quartered And Cleaned California Strawberries 2 Cups Diced Watermelon (Yellow And Red, If Available) 1 ⁄4 Cup Sliced Fresh Basil 1 Handful Arugula Sherry Vinaigrette (See Recipe Below) Salt And Pepper, To Taste 1 ⁄3 Cup Candied Walnuts Or Pecans 1 ⁄3 Cup Blue Or Goat Cheese 1 Tablespoon Pomegranate Molasses Or Balsamic Syrup

1 ⁄2 1 1 1 ⁄2

Cup Sherry Vinegar Tablespoon Honey Shallot, Cut In Half And Sliced Thinly Cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil Salt And Pepper, To Taste

To make vinaigrette, bring sherry vinegar and honey to a boil in small sauce pan. In small mixing bowl, pour hot sherry mixture over shallots and let cool to room temperature. Once cooled, whisk olive oil with shallots and add salt and pepper to taste.

In a large mixing bowl add strawberries, watermelon, basil and Arugula. Gently add drizzle of mixed vinaigrette over strawberries, watermelon, basil and Arugula mixture. Toss and season with salt and pepper, plate on desired serving platter or into bowls, then top with nuts, cheese and syrup to serve.

What a great idea it turned out to be! Est. in 2007, Tamarack (105 Blacktail Rd. on the way to Blacktail Mountain) is a very popular place year-round, but be prepared for a short wait during the busy tourist season. Seating choices are the main dining room, upstairs balcony, or outside on the patio along the “babbling brook”. It’s also a popular place for live music often with lively recorded music at all other times. Kids Eat Free on Monday’s, Tuesday is “Tamarack Trivia Night” & Wednesday is “Community Tap Night”. “Brewery Soups & Salads” has six unique choices such as Baked Brie Salad, Salmon Caesar, Stoner Creek Salad. The Homemade Soups are made fresh daily.

“Brewhouse Favorites” (Entrees) feature 10 “Tried and true favorites with some brewpub twists”. Choices include Steaks, Ribs, Salmon, Pasta, Enchiladas, Fish & Chips & more.

My pretty blonde chose the Mediterranean Salmon - “Blackened wild Alaska Sockeye Salmon grilled medium rare over angel hair pasta tossed with our artichoke Roma Kalamata brushchetta. Finished with feta cheese and a balsamic reduction, and served with toasted pita points.” ($17.95) She loved it and commented, “This is the BEST salmon dinner I’ve had in a long, long time!”

“Rack Classics” are 9 sandwich choices such as Prime Rib Brew Bread, Baked Brie Chicken Sandwich. My meal choice was The Boss Hawg BBQ - “Grilled local Redneck Andouille sausage topped with shredded pork, Switchback Stout BBQ sauce and our chipotle slaw on a toasted Alehouse bun” ($11.95) It was awesome tasting & very filling!

“Alehouse Burgers” are 7 superb choices of “Halfpound American Kobe Beef served on buns baked fresh daily by Ceres Bakery. Choose from a side of beer battered fries, pepper slaw or a garden salad”. ($9.95-$13.95) My favorite is the “Bayou Burger”...

Make a Homemade Sriracha BBQ Sauce Sriracha, a Thai hot sauce made from fresh red chilies, has become a new obsession throughout the nation as Americans crave heat in a big way. For those new to Sriracha and Sriracha lovers alike, a sweet and spicy homemade BBQ sauce is a great way to add exciting flavor to backyard barbecues. It’s the perfect complement to Memphis spice-rubbed and grilled pork ribs, providing a nice combination of heat and sweet.

Homemade Sriracha Bbq Sauce Makes 1 1⁄4 Cups Sauce ⁄4 Pound Fresh Fresno Chilies, Stemmed And Coarsely Chopped 4 Cloves Fresh Garlic 1 Can (8 Ounces) Tomato Sauce 1 ⁄2 Cup Water 1 ⁄4 Cup Firmly Packed Light Brown Sugar 3

⁄4 Cup Molasses ⁄4 Cup White Vinegar 1 Teaspoon McCormick Smoked Paprika 1 Teaspoon McCormick Gourmet Sicilian Sea Salt

Mix all ingredients in medium saucepan. Bring to a boil on high heat. Reduce heat to low; simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Cool to room temperature. Spoon mixture into blender container; cover. Blend on medium speed 2 minutes or until smooth. May also use hand blender to puree in saucepan.

Strain through sieve to remove seeds. Note: May also replace Fresno chilies with red jalapeno or serrano chilies.

Tips: • •

For less heat in sauce, remove seeds from chilies before chopping.

Chilies contain capsaicin, which can burn your skin. After chopping chilies, wash hands and cutting board thoroughly with warm soapy water. Or, wear Source: McCormick rubber gloves when handling chilies.

Serve Eggs with Safety in Mind Today, consumers are more conscious than ever before about the importance of food safety.

Fortunately, providing safe food is the top priority for those in food production. But it’s not always obvious to know how that focus translates into how foods like eggs are actually produced. To help support consumers in making informed food choices regarding safe food, the Coalition for Sustainable Egg Supply (CSES) is leading a research project to understand how producing eggs in various hen housing systems impacts sustainability, including food safety. The three housing systems being studied are known as a conventional cage system, which accounts for approximately 95 percent of eggs produced in the U.S.; an enriched colony cage system, which provides more space and activities for the hens than conventional; and a cage-free aviary system, which allows hens to roam through defined sectors of their barn exhibiting more natural behaviors. Each housing system has different potential impacts on crucial aspects of egg production. Initial findings from the CSES research show that food safety is not impacted by the housing system those eggs are produced in, with each of them producing eggs that are safe to consume.

Food Safety Tips For Your Family Regardless of how the eggs you purchase are produced, it’s important to always use safe food handling practices at home. Be sure to: • Refrigerate your eggs promptly when you return from the store • Wash your hands before and after handling eggs • Prevent cross-contamination between raw eggs and other food items • Cook eggs thoroughly to eliminate any potential foodborne bacteria Source: Coalition for Sustainable Egg Supply

A Camp for Everyone

By Jill Seigmund Nestled along the west shore of Flathead Lake, the Glacier Camp welcomes everyone with a variety of multi-generational and faith based programs. The 40 acres upon which Glacier Camp sits was donated to Kalispell First Presbyterian Church in 1930 by Kathryn Fingado-O’Neil. Since then the camp has fostered positive learning experiences for thousands of people in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Glacier Camp offers several programs that appeal to senior citizens, including the following:

GrandCamp is a weeklong camp designed to help grandparents and grandchildren develop a deeper relationship. According to Dave Saugen, Executive Director of Glacier Camp, facilitated conversations and activities provide the perfect opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to get to know each other better. The camp is designed for a one-on-one experience… one grandparent and one grandchild age 8 or older.

GrandCamp and is based out of the Spruce Lodge, which provides comfortable and clean sleeping, dining and socializing accommodations. Cost is $400 per grandparent/grandchild pair and includes lodging, meals and activities. Although the camp takes place in July, registration begins in January online at www.glaciercamp.org.

Senior Ladies Camp is designed for women 50 and up who are seeking some designated time to dig deeper into what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Facilitated discussions and fun activities, including walking in the woods and jumping on a water trampoline, make this an unforgettable three-day experience.

Senior Ladies Camp runs August 13 – 15. Cost of the camp is $135 per person and includes double-occupancy lodging and meals at the Spruce Lodge, as well as all activities. The camp is limited to 25 participants. Online registration is available at www.glaciercamp.org.

Lanham Lectures are open to all adults but are particularly attractive to seniors,

says Saugen. Also held in July, this three-day retreat features sermons from Glacier Presbytery Pastor Tim Lanham from Sunrise Presbyterian Church in Great Falls.

Pastor Lanham attended seminary school at Princeton and is a highly regarded speaker. Cost of this retreat varies from $125 to $266 per person depending upon accommodations required. Online registration is available at www.glaciercamp.org.

Quilting Retreats are routinely held during the spring and fall at Glacier Camp and are independently organized through quilt guilds. Saugen encourages all quilters to inquire at their local quilting store for details.

Weddings and Reunions are yet another way to experience the beauty of Glacier Camp. The facility is available to rent during the summer months. 1. Cut 20” x 20” squares of linen, and then dip dye end of one side (using instructions on dye).

2. Once dying is done and dry, hem around entire square napkin.

3. For lettering stencils, draw letters on freezer paper, cut them out carefully, and iron freezer paper onto fabric, shiny side down. Carefully sponge paint over freezer paper stencil.

(Optional: Use plastic stencil or stamps for lettering).

4. Allow paint to dry completely. Remove freezer paper.

BEAN BAGS Crafting time: 1-2 hours Supplies and Tools: Duck cloth, outdoor or heavy-duty decor fabric Scissors

Basic sewing supplies Sewing machine Dried beans or corn for filling

1. To make three bean bags, cut out six 4 1⁄2” squares.

2. Place right sides of two pieces of fabric together and pin three sides in place.

3. Double stitch a 1⁄4” seam around three sides.

4. Turn bag right side out and fill 3⁄4 full with dried beans or corn.

5. Fold in rough edges and pin opening closed.

6. Double stitch a 1⁄4” seam to close bag.

7. Repeat for remaining bags.

• Make A Great Impression: Using the round cutter and food-safe embossing set, you can use the mini embossers in a variety of different ways for hundreds of designs.

1. Bake Cookies: Use round pops cookie pan to bake perfectly shaped cookie pops.
