Not only does an option like a heated towel rack save energy and time by reducing the frequency of washing towels, it keeps them dry and free of mold and mildew between washes. Fit Beyond 55 However, gyms don't necessarily pose a risk greater than any other public space. Based on the research so far ,COVID-19 appears to spread primarily through close personal contact with an infected person.
COVID-19 Not Found in Sweat The COVID-19 pandemic has been unprecedented and as communities begin to ease restrictions, it's important to keep taking steps to protect yourself from COVID-19 when you visit a gym or public space. You should always follow the guidance of the public health officials where you live keeping in mind that restrictions vary among cities and states. If you're at higher risk of serious illness, you might consider delaying a return to the gym at this time. Like all public spaces where people gather, gyms and fitness centers are places where viral illnesses, including COVID-19, can spread. The shared weights and exercise equipment, sweaty stretching areas, and heavy breathing may cause you anxiety. 12
When it comes to the gym, there’s some good news: "We know that the coronavirus is not found in sweat,” says Amesh Adalja, M.D., an infectious disease physician, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security. COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, appears to spread primarily when people cough or sneeze and respiratory droplets land on other people or surfaces nearby. “Heavy breathing during exercise won’t shed the virus, but it’s coughing or sneezing that we’re concerned about” says Manish Trivedi, M.D., director of the division of infectious diseases and chairman of infection prevention and control at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center.

Fit Beyond 55
Respiratory droplets can spread up to six feet, which is why public health officials recommend putting this distance between yourself and others. Objects in the gym that are touched frequently, including exercise machines, mats, and dumbbells could potentially serve as a reservoir for viruses and other germs because people may cough into their hands and then use equipment. Also be vigilant about cleaning equipment before and after using it. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and/or use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol before and after your workout. Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth at all times.
Avoid touching anything to your face, such as a towel, that has been in contact with any communal surfaces. Perhaps most importantly, if you do not feel well you should under no circumstances visit a gym. Whether your gym is doing extra cleaning or not, your own actions are vital for protecting the health and safety of yourself and the other gym members. YMCA METRO ATLANTA ANNOUNCES
PHASED APPROACH TO REOPENING BRANCHES FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE VISIT HTTPS://YMCAATLANTA.ORG/
Atlanta (May 12, 2020) — The YMCA of Metro Atlanta today announced seven locations will reopen with limited amenities on May 15 as the organization begins a phased approach to opening Atlanta-area locations. Additional Y branches will open May 25 and June 1, respectively. Phase one will closely follow protocols set forth by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Georgia Department of Public Health, including regular temperature checks, designating entry and exit points, cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces and shared spaces, social and physical distancing, spacing of fitness equipment, wearing of masks and controlling traffic patterns inside the facility. Additionally, all activities will be limited to individual workouts with trained staff positioned to monitor and enforce social distancing. For Y branches opening May 15, only the wellness space will be available. Starting May 18, lap swim, group exercise and select tennis facilities will be available by online reservation. “The health and safety or our Y members, staff and community remains our top priority,” said Lauren KoonAs operations normalize, the Y will pivot to phase two in mid-June, which includes re-opening additional areas within Y facilities for broader use. Further progression will continue through additional phases in July and August which will reflect services and activities similar to YMCA operations pre-COVID-19. A full list of locations and opening dates can be found below. In a few instances, some Y branches may open for youth programming prior to a branch opening for member services. _____________________________________________________
