RE-GAIN YOUR LIFE WITH NO PAIN Imagine not being able live, work, walk, or even open a jar without pain. These are some of the devastating side effects of musculoskeletal injuries. You may think that everyone has pain. Many of us just suck it up because the answers medical doctors give only suggest medication, countless physical therapy visits, or surgery as the only options. What if there were a better, faster, and safer way to treat these conditions? You would want to know about it. You would want to try it. And if it worked, you would want everyone to know about it! Enter Acoustic Wave Therapy. This treatment is unique 3 ways: 1. Acoustic Pressure Wave technology is a cutting-edge technique that utilizes natural waves to promote healing! 2. Treatment time is approximately 15 minutes for 5-10 sessions. 3. There is no down/recovery time, no medication, no needles.

How does it work? Waves generated from the wand penetrate through the tissue (muscle/tendon/ligament/joint) being treated. As the wave contacts the injured tissue, it increases local blood circulation and metabolic activity to regenerate healthy cells, and decrease inflammation and pain. Success! One patient suffered for over 1 year with Achilles tendon pain so intense that she could do nothing without pain. She tried many therapies with no lasting help, until she saw an ad for this treatment. After a complimentary consultation and examination, she decided to give it a try. Since the introductory price was only $50.00, it was an easy choice. She felt immediate improvement. After 7 sessions over a few weeks she able to walk again without pain. In fact, she began hiking again and traveled pain free for the 1st time over a year! Please, if you are suffering, or know someone that is, please give them this article to take the next step.

FIT TIP

3 EASY TIPS

TO STAY WELL DURING THE HOLIDAYS The holidays bring family and friends together for togetherness, lots of eating and drinking, and maybe even some traveling. It is easy to get off track, eat things we wouldn’t normally eat, and forego workouts. So, I wanted to share 3 easy tips on how you can stay on top of your wellness even if you can’t get to the gym.

HYDRATE: Staying hydrated will curb your appetite, provide more energy, and keeps your muscles and joints working better. Often times, you may feel hungry soon after having a sufficient meal. Try this: 1. Instead of reaching for a snack, hydrate. You’ll notice you feel more fulfilled regularly as your hydration levels balance. 2. Keep a bottle or two of water in your car, especially if you will be out for long periods during Christmas shopping. Consistent water intake will make a huge difference. Experimenting with what works is the key to progress. 3. Starting your day off with a 16 oz serving of water, or lemon water, will replenish your body as you wake, and build up your hydration momentum for the day. DETOX:

I recommend the Mighty Dozen blend. There are SO many benefits to juicing: 1. Digestion is improved. 2. Inflammation is reduced. 3. Energy is boosted in a natural long-lasting way. 4. Skin is healthier and more vibrant.

PORTION CONTROL:

Portion control and nutritional balance during meal times will allow you to satisfy your appetite, manage your caloric intake, as well as balance your carbohydrate and fat intake. 1. For carbohydrates like rice or pasta, use your palm as a guide for a balanced proper serving size. Try a bun-less burger or one half of a bun and still enjoy indulging. 2. Include vegetables so you meet your required nutrients for the day. Veggies also assist with efficient digestion.

Detox your body from all the “I shouldn’t have eaten that”! Juicing is a Above all, enjoy time with great option to clean out your digestive sysyour family and friends! tem. 3:8 Juice offers delicious fresh pressed Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas! juices and a 10% discount from North Atlanta FitLife! You can do a juice cleanse for 1 day or several days and you will feel amazing! If you By Malik Ali, Guest Contributor can’t get there, try juicing at home, or look for Certified Master Personal Trainer, my favorite grocery store brand called Suja. 6 Ways to Fight the Flu As temperatures drop, the spread of cold and flu germs rises. Start the year off healthy and be sure to rid your home of lingering germs that may be hiding in places you don’t expect. “I always recommend the flu shot – especially when officials are predicting a harsh flu season like this year – good nutrition and plenty of sleep, but there are other healthy habits we can all develop to help keep ourselves and those around us stay healthy during cold and flu season,” said Dr. Tanya Altmann, pediatrician, best-selling author and founder of Calabasas Pediatrics. “Vaccination is important, but there are other preventative measures that we should all keep in mind.” These tips from the experts at 12

YOUR LOCAL LIFESTYLE • HEALTH • WELLNESS MAGAZINE

Clorox can help you prevent the spread of germs:

Get Vaccinated

Even though it’s well into cold and flu season, it’s still important to get a flu shot if you haven’t already. Vaccination is the first step in flu prevention. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend a yearly flu virus vaccination – even if the vaccine’s efficacy fluctuates – for almost everyone 6 months and older.

Keep Hands Washed

Hands touch so many things throughout the day. It’s important to wash your hands often, including after using the bathroom and

Fowler YMCA,

before preparing or serving food. Germs can spread by touching your eyes, nose or mouth after coming in contact with a contaminated surface. Those areas are common entry points to the body for germs, so try not to touch your face or eat until you wash your hands.

Stay Home if You’re Sick

Even though you may not want to miss work or school, it’s important to stay home to prevent the spread of illnesses to those around you. Even at home, make sure to cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue to prevent the spread of germs to your loved ones. Lastly, try your best to make good use of your time off from work or school to rest, relax, eat well and recover from illnesses.

Follow Health Guidelines

t’s important to eat right (fill up with fresh fruit and veggies, vitamin D and probiotics), get some exercise (at least 30 minutes a day of moderate intensity) and get plenty of sleep (at least 8 hours per night) to help boost your body’s ability to fight the effects of cold and flu viruses.

Be Aware of Your

Environment

Be aware of illnesses going around in your community to take extra precautions to avoid them or to know when to seek medical attention if you do get sick.

Disinfect Hard Surfaces

Disinfection is a key step to help prevent the spread of cold and flu germs. The CDC recommends disinfecting frequently touched, hard surfaces, such as doorknobs, refrigerator handles, light switches and faucets, with an EPA-registered disinfectant like Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. They help kill 99.9 percent of germs that can live for up to 48 hours on hard, non-porous surfaces. Learn more about flu prevention at Clorox.com/FluFOMO. (FAMILY FEATURES)

NORTH ATLANTA

GIVING BACK

HOLIDAY GIVING GUIDE YOU, our FitLife community, are our Giving Back feature! Let’s GIVE some love! Here are some ways you can share the holiday spirit to our local communities and to the world this holiday season. Toys for Tots is a program created by the U.S. Marines that collects and distributes new, unwrapped toys to families who can’t afford gifts. Find drop off locations at many grocery stores, retailers and offices. Operation Christmas Child - From children to seniors, families pack shoebox gifts each year to bless children in need around the world. Many churches around Atlanta are drop off locations. Collect food for North Fulton Community Charities or the Norcross Co-Op. You can do this anytime! Pick a “Hoodie Ornament” from tree at The Fowler YMCA in Peachtree Corners and, through the Norcross Co-Op, provide hoodies to struggling families to keep warm. Adopt an Angel - Each year, the Atlanta community adopts thousands of “Angels”, children and seniors living at or below the federal index poverty level. Your help will bring smiles on Christmas morning! Make a Veteran’s Holiday! Shop the USO Wishbook. The USO has made purchasing the perfect gift for a veteran incredibly simple, offering pre-packaged services and items in a range of prices. From a “flight home comfort kit” for wounded troops, to resume and career support, to helping send a military child to camp, the USO ensures your gift goes to a good cause.

Holidays for Heroes - Send holiday cards to military members through your local American Red Cross chapter that participates in the program. Sponsor Christmas for a foster child through the CENTER FOR CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS, located in North Atlanta, which provides a home for youth who have been abused, neglected, and/or abandoned by their caregivers. UNICEF Market - If you are looking for stocking stuffers and unique finds, shop unicefusa.org/HolidayMarket for a vast collection of handcrafted items made by artisans from around the world. From blankets woven in India to recycled glass pitchers crafted in Mexico and more, these gifts help support the artisans and their families, keep traditional skills alive and give back to essential programs for children. Give a Gift in Honor or Memory of Someone: Shop the gift catalog from Heifer International to donate livestock and training to struggling communities in 21 countries around the world. Samaritan’s Purse Gift Catalog – Help families, children and the aging around the world. You can gift in many areas for almost any donation amount to drill a village well, build or improve a hospital, give blankets or feed a hungry baby, just to name a few. By: Tracie Morse
