Healthy Sleep Habits:
How Many Hours Does Your Child Need? hile it is true that some children need more sleep than others, it is W important for parents to know the science-based recommendations to ensure their children are getting enough sleep to learn, play, and grow. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), children need varying amounts of sleep at different stages in their development. These numbers reflect total sleep hours in a 24-hour period, including naps.
Recommended Amount of Sleep for Pediatric Populations Age
Recommended Sleep Hours per 24 Hour Period
Infants: 4-12 months
12-16 hours (including naps)
Toddlers: 1-2 years
11-14 hours (including naps)
Preschoolers: 3-5 years
10-13 hours (including naps)
Gradeschoolers: 6-12 years
9-12 hours
Teens: 13-18 years
8-10 hours
Do those numbers surprise you?
Working and single parents in particular are often forced to get by on as few as 4 or 5 hours of sleep each night. Although it may be tempting to assume that children can also cope with skipping a few hours of sleep on occasion, all children thrive on a regular bedtime routine. Sleep deprivation can lead to problems such as irritability, difficulty concentrating, hypertension, obesity, headaches, and depression. Making sure children get enough sleep helps them have a healthier immune system, and better school performance, behavior, memory, and mental health. 13

Fever and Pain Medicine: How Much To Give Your Child arents may not realize that manufacturers of fever and pain medicine P standardized the amount of acetaminophen in infant’s and children’s over-the counter liquid acetaminophen medicines in 2011. Below are some helpful guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on how much of this medication to give children:
Children under Age 2:
Always call your pediatrician before giving acetaminophen to a child under 2 years of age, and call right away if your child is under three months of age and has a fever.
Children over Age 2:
For children over the age of 2 years, check the label to see how much medicine to give. If you know your child’s weight, use that. If you do not know your child’s weight, go by age for the dose amount.
Important Medication Safety Reminders for Parents: • Keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
• Use only the dosing device that comes with the product (do not use a household teaspoon). • Never give adult medicines to children. • Always read and follow the instructions on the label. • Talk to your pediatrician if you have any questions. • If you think your child has taken too much of this or any medicine, call poison control at 800.222.1222.
