Happy Mothers Day May is such a BEA U TIFUL time of year. This year April showers have indeed brought May flowers. Who should I give these lovely flowers to? Of course, they are a perfect gift for Mother’s Day! The number one blessing in my life is my children. I feel my love for them cannot be measured, but is a reflection of God’s love. It’s also my important responsibility to show my children that love and lead them in His direction.

I hope one day when I get to Heaven God will say “Well done Amy, you were a good Mama and led those boys on a path straight to Me”.

My family is a close second blessing, including of course the ladies in my family, my mother, grandmothers, three sisters, and two nieces.

Pick the plastic container of your choice.

We used an empty Nestle Coffee Mate Creamer bottle. We stripped off the plastic, and washed and dried it. Then we cut off the top to make it the size we wanted to work with. Instructions: Step 1: Using a light blue paint diluted with water, make a thin wash.

Swirl and roll it inside the container, until the inside is completely covered.

Allow it to dry thoroughly.

Step 2: On the outside glue your choice of items for a restful scene.

Use buttons, pipe cleaners, paper flowers and raffia to create your panoramic scenery.

Step 3: When the glue is dry, cover the outside with a clear glaze.

You are now ready to find some May flowers!

Since your daughter’s birth, you’ve been saving money for her education to ensure she has enough for those meaningful events in her life… After all, that’s what responsible parents do, right? We prepare our girls to be independent and self-reliant above all.

When my daughter left for college, my heart swelled with pride, excitement and hope and a little trepidation…Will she do well, is she ready for all that freedom? Other mothers have told me they have experienced the same feelings. We all realize there is more to preparing for adulthood than academic education. I believe that all kids who spend at least a part of their summers at summer camp, are better prepared for later decisions that help them make the best life for who they are.

Why? Kids of all ages need mentors they can trust who are separate from their parents. Parents need those mentors to be a support system that will enhance their child’s life. These role models provide guidance and help them make see life as an opportunity to greatness by helping them lay the foundations they need now! As a Camp Director for over 30 years and as a parent of now adult children, I understand now more than ever that children, even as adults, will always “need” their parents, and a parent’s goals should include giving their children the opportunities to successfully prepare for independence. Camping is one of those safe venues for this kind of growth.

I have seen campers begin camp as early as five and a half and as late as their teen years who continued to camp for years and continued to return to Riverview to be on staff because of the supportive environment that offered adventure, inspiration, character and confidence-building.

While some may view this opportunity as parents getting rid of their kids, most parents who understand the values and concept of residential camping are counting on the investment to set their children up to be a more independent and confident person. They are so right. “Camp is a game changer” explains Dr. Lori Hart from Atlanta GA, who is a part of the orientation training for the Riverview Staff. Dr. Hart believes that camp teaches children how to grow up, take responsibility, and learn about meaningful relationships outside their “local friends”. Often before attending camp, children will not have significant relationships that they view as “important” and in fact, most don’t even know what it means to have the friends that camp brings…lifelong friendships. Campers do not have to be “cool” at camp because they can truly be themselves and be accepted. Camp is the often first place and time that campers are apart form their parents, that self-esteem is boosted, confidence increases and they find time to learn about investing themselves in things that matter.

An interesting thing happens at camp when kids are allowed to experience the camp community. The rules change. Everything changes. Authenticity is rewarded.

Responsibility is cool. Maturity adds clout.

“If it weren’t for camp, I would never have been ready for college, which led to graduate school, my doctorate and the great career I enjoy now. This success was a natural progression that began in camp”, declared Dr. Hart. I heard these same comments over and over from our campers and staff members at Riverview. At camp, the focus turns away from self to others which is a huge piece of the growing process.

Without this type of experience, kids often flounder through their childhood, teens and early twenties, unsure how to • Choose valuable and support based friendships • Make decisions for their lives and • Have the confidence to pursue their dreams.

For campers, camp offers a large group of mentors to look up to and to give amazing confidence-building experiences to guide on the life path, while learning lessons about growing up and showing how the importance of making good choices in friends is critical. Camp Riverview’s intention is to be a support system to parents in their desires for their girls to grow mentally, physically, socially and to be centered spiritually as well.

Dr. Hart, speaks all over the country to college students, and comments that “I can always tell the difference between those who camped and those who did not! That is how impactful camp is in their social development”! Through my own involvement in the camp experience, I learned how to leave camp, go back to school, find valuable friends and make better decisions...which transferred to later experiences in life. I learned how to surround myself with people who would bring the same value to my life that camp brought...I wasn’t born with this skill, I learned it at camp”.

Sometimes I think we as parents forget what’s important now. We’re so focused on what is necessary later; we don’t realize we need to set our kids up now to have the skills to live later.
