Hello and welcome to the area's newest informational guide for women throughout Sarasota and Manatee counties. My name is Kristi Quigley Lovelace, your publisher.

I am extremely excited to launch this magazine and fulfill my dream.

As a busy working mother of three, I understand the importance of supporting, encouraging, and connecting with women in our community. My hope is that area women will keep this magazine and refer to it often as a trusted guide for products, services, and events that interest them the most. Our print and online Kristi Lovelace directory, blogs, and events Owner/Publisher calendar aim to connect women with local resources to help them both personally and professionally.

When it comes to facial aging, studies show that as much as 80% of our appearance is caused by our sun habits and not the passage of time. Even if you were neglectful with sun protection as a child or teen, you can take a stand on how you age going forward. While most people know that skipping sunscreen when lounging at the pool or beach is a bad idea, few realize that incidental sun exposure can be even more damaging. Whether sitting in a sunny office, commuting to work or walking the dog, if we neglect to protect ourselves from daily sun damage, we are putting our skin at risk for greater photo-aging in the long run. Protecting your skin with the correct broad-spectrum UVA/ UVB sunscreen is the best way to shift the balance of power in your favor. Look for the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Approval when making your selection.

Did you know that the highest incidence of skin cancer in the US is in the northwest? WHY? First, let’s talk UVA vs. UVB. Remember A for Aging and B for Burning. UVA rays are the harmful wrinkle and skin cancer causing rays that penetrate to the deep layers of our skin and even penetrate clouds, glass and plastic. UVB are the sunburn rays and this is where SPF ratings matter. So people who live in cloudy, rainy climates may believe they don’t need sunscreen. Unless you are hiding under your bed in the dark, you may be exposed to UVA even while indoors!

But my face breaks out when I use sunscreen! Mine too. Until I discovered the right sunscreen for my body is different than the right sunscreen for my face, based on my skin type. There are solutions. While aging is inevitable, our daily skincare routine and choices greatly affect how we look at each passing birthday. Skincare battles are better prevented than corrected. Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of filler! So make sure to slather up, cover up and repeat– rain or shine! Because the best wrinkle and dark mark is the one we NEVER get!

SWAT Keeps Growing, Connecting

By Dr. Robyn Spirtas I earned my PhD in counseling psychology and worked as a marriage and family therapist for nearly 25 years. She moved her practice to Bradenton in 2006 to marry Neil Spirtas, VP of the Manatee Chamber of Commerce.

In 2009, I was approached by two women about helping them market their businesses. I said, “of course”, but asked if they would mind meeting together rather than seperately. Each woman brought a friend and the five women had an impromptu marketing meeting. We enjoyed it so much that we decided to do it again the next month until soon we were meeting on monthly and growing. After several months, the group came up with a name (not an easy task). They decided on S.W.A.T. Successful Women Aligning Together. It was mostly a social activity until one day a friend suggested making it into a formal networking organization. We put our heads together and began publicizing the SWAT Networking Group. I even found a fly swatter in my garage that said “SWAT” on it!

I took all the things I didn’t like about networking meetings – like getting up at the crack of dawn – and kept all the things I did like such as LUNCH and being around women!

As our group grew, two more chapters were started. SWAT now covers Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch, and “Manasota” near the airport. My goal is to open two more chapters this year.

meeting is something we call “brag dollars” where we thank someone in the group or brag about our kids or grandkids or about something we are proud of. We laugh and have a good time. It helps us get to know each other on a personal level. At the end of the year, all the “brag money” goes to charity.

I believe that the success of the organization is in the wonderful women who are members and the fact that they focus on supporting one another both personally and professionally. We call ourselves “Sisters”. I have never felt such camaraderie and heartfelt giving in any other organization I have belonged to. I am now the “Executive” Director and have amazing women as directors of each chapter. I am so very proud to be a SWAT Sister!

Free concert, vendor booths, and food. Open to the public. This event is hosted on the first Friday of each month. Shotgun Justice will fill the air with Classic Rock, Southern Rock, and Country Music. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Food Bank of Manatee. Guests may bring lawn chairs and dogs on short leashes, but no coolers.

Downtown Lakewood Ranch. Event kickoff at 5 p.m., parade starts at 6 p.m.

Event to benefit Manasota Operation Troops Support (MOTS). Help fill the truck with toiletry and non-perishable food items to be placed in care packages and sent overseas to our active military.
