Meet Preston Bass A Pine Bluff native, I grew up in a big house in the country with parents who both worked extremely hard their whole lives outside of their regular jobs and were always outside building, cutting, clearing, burning, mowing etc. Since we had several acres with a good bit of timber, we had multiple lawnmowers, chainsaws, a tractor and anything else needed to constantly maintain a very beautiful front lawn and all of the back.

Well when you have a lot of equipment you’re also going to have a lot of breakdowns and continual maintenance.

Being the guy who could fix anything, my dad was always in the barn working on any number of things that had broken down or needed maintenance

and I was usually right in the middle of it all trying to help. So growing up I definitely picked up a tremendous amount of knowledge on do-it-yourself, building, fixing, fabrication and making things work with what resources were available. But in particular the one thing that transcends to my work now that I learned from them primarily by example was the value of brute force hard work!

After graduating from the American Commercial College in Wichita Falls, TX with a degree in Accounting and Marketing, I moved back to Little Rock and went to work for Alltel Corp in Financial Services for three years. I then had a good friend who worked at a local title company get me an interview for

my first job as a mortgage loan officer just in front of the subprime boom and from there would go on to spend the next 17 years in mortgage banking. During this time I would pick up jobs on the side building fences and decks for family, friends and customers I had forged relationships with. Most everything I built way back then was excruciatingly slow because unless my Dad was able to help me, I was always working alone, did it all after work or on the weekends and . . . I did not yet own so much as a nail gun or any other power tool other than a circular saw! I look back now at some of the big projects I took on in the sweltering heat realizing that I drove every single nail with a hammer and think MY GOD! What was I thinking?? However, I persevered and eventually got my first nail gun and from there took on more and more as that one single purchase cut my time in half!

I also realized I had an inherent talent for carpentry and woodwork. So as more years passed (now blowing through at least two nail guns per summer) I went on to acquire my contractor’s license and incorporate in 2007 branding my own LLC bearing the same name as the softball team I sponsored for nearly 20 years. So over the next several years I dialed in on contracting and improving my crafts with both more education and experience. As it became increasingly more difficult to manage crews and jobsites while being handcuffed to a desk and career I had begun to loathe, I finally made the long overdue decision last year to walk away from mortgage banking to be a full time residential contractor and devote the time during regular business hours I had otherwise spent being miserable to perpetuating the business. So here I am a year later wishing I’d made that leap of faith five years earlier because I now love what I do!

Q: So what do you attribute your abilities to the most?

A: Without question, that would definitely be my Dad. The man was/is incredibly talented with his hands and could build absolutely anything – including two antique cars from the tires up! According to him, my namesake “Preston” Sr was also quite the carpenter during a time of very primitive tools and technology. So it seems obvious I have the inherent abilities but at the end of the day I wouldn’t know how to strike a nail, read a tape measure, make a straight cut or much less build a deck without my Dad’s tutelage and help on the other end of that board!

Q: Are decks all you build?

A: Absolutely not. Though decks are what I’d consider my forte’ and first love, I do all types of builds and entire remodels. I’d say I’m just as good at laying hardwoods, tile floors and backsplash as anything else. I especially love kitchen and bath remodeling.

Q: Are you licensed and insured?

A: Definitely. I have a Residential Contractor’s License and Team Bass Property Enterprises LLC carries 1.5M in insurance. When we advance to the point where that’s not enough, I’ve really made a success story!

Q: How can we see more of your work as well as a broader range of what you do?

A: Although I don’t have a web page as of now, one is in the works. However we do have a Facebook page that has most everything we’ve done in the past couple of years.

Q: What kind of materials do you primarily use for decks?

A: 100% of the time I use pressure treated pine that is tagged “For Outdoor Use” and is usually still wet and heavy straight from the dip tank. I’ve had a few homeowners who wanted to use composite decking because the house had a pool or was on the lake. I also leave that nail gun parked in the garage for decks and use nothing but galvanized and coated screws. The nail gun is mostly used for privacy fences and stud wall framing. Additionally, unless specified by the customer, I tend to lean toward using 2x6 boards for the actual decking our feet touch as opposed to true one inch deck boards for strength, durability and longevity. In most all cases one looks just as good as the other. But I always give the customer the option.
