Did you know that the average monthly tuition for Kitsap County’s private schools is LESS than the average monthly cost of school-age childcare during the summer?

Yes! I did know that! I currently have two school age children. One is a sophomore at Bremerton High School and one is a sixth grader at Christ the King Lutheran School. They are different kids with different needs and I find that each school is a perfect fit for them. When I began exploring our education options in Kitsap County I was pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of choices and cost ranges. I believe there is something suitable here for every child, including some really great homeschool resources provided by each individual school district. LOCAL AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT Toni Yuly has been an early bird her whole life and loves to start the day in her studio listening to other early birds sing outside her window. She lives in a small house by the water in Bremerton, WA, a short ferry boat ride from Seattle, WA where she was born. Toni fell in love with Eastern sensibilities during a year spent in Sendai, Japan when she was just 17 years old. She graduated from the University of Washington with a BFA in Painting where she studied with the great American painter, Jacob Lawrence. Now, after many years as a librarian in the King County Library System, Toni works full-time as a designer, artist and writer. “The Whole Wide World and Me” is Toni’s newest book. The NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) challenge is to

write 50,000 words of a novel during the 30 days of November. Each year on November 1, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand-new novel! The Young Writers Program offers tools, resources, and community access to help young writers and educators set ambitious creative goals and tackle projects year-round! Educators can support student skill development with free Common Core–aligned curricula, online classroom management tools, and motivational classroom materials. The Kitsap Kids’ Directory encourages all writers, young and old, “good” and “not so good” to sign up at NaNoWriMo.org and go forth with the challenge! We will be awarding 5 prizes based mostly on effort to whomever shows the most inspiration (there’s always brownie points for including things like “Kitsap” & “community” & a general sense of good will. Kickin’ It With K9s Orientation 11/5, 11/16, 12/3, 12/21 Kitsap Humane Society is inviting community members to take dogs on field trips to the park, to the beach, and other dog-friendly destinations in Kitsap – even sleepovers at your home! – to give them a break from the stress of shelter life.ww All that is required to get started is a quick, 20-minute orientation. Then you can be on your way with your shelter dog, some simple instructions, and a special doggie backpack filled with supplies! Daytime field trips are scheduled seven days a week, except during shelter open hours, when dogs need to be in their kennels to meet potential adopters. HOLIDAY PET TIPS courtesy of First Friends The Dog Days of Summer are long gone, school is back in session, and holidays plans are filling our calendars. Being prepared, while keeping everyone in the family safe and having fun, can be a challenge. First Friends would be glad to help! If you will be traveling with your pet make sure they are up to date on their vaccines, have current ID (both tags and microchip), and a travel-pack including: food & treats, bedding, clean-up kit (poop bags and an enzyme cleaner), Jen Walker, Owner of pet 1st Aid Kit*, any necessary medications and veterinary First Friends, offers small group dog training records, and a crate. Boarding facilities and pet sitters book classes at Affinity Canine early; make reservations now if you need them. If family is Education in Ollalla, WA coming to visit, write out what they will need to know about your pets. Maybe your kids would like to write an introduction for their pets to the visitors? Be extra careful that absolutely no candy gets left out where your pet can get at it. Not only is chocolate poisonous to dogs and cats (the darker the chocolate the more harmful) but many sugar-less treats contain xylitol as a sweetener which is very toxic to dogs and cats as well! Explaining this in advance to your kids will help them be an active part of the team, giving the best care of your dog together. Be vigilant about keeping dogs away from table-scraps. A note from Dr. Niran on living the Kitsap Life I have been a pediatrician in Kitsap County for the past 18 years and was born and raised here. I believe the Olympic Peninsula is the best place in the country to raise a family and love being part of this community. As a mom to four school-aged children and a local pediatrician, I have always appreciated having the Kids Directory as a resource to explore all the children’s activities and events available locally.
