Understanding Bicycle Laws!

Bicycle riders and automobile drivers follow the same rules and have the same rights. Example: Cars must stop at a stop sign and bicycles must stop at a stop sign.

Bicyclists must travel in the same direction as cars. DO NOT ride in bicycle lanes against the flow of traffic!

Bicyclists must travel on the right side of the roadway in the direction of traffic, except when passing, making a legal left turn, riding on a one-way street, riding on a road that is too narrow for an auto and bicycle to share a lane, or when the right side of the road is closed due to road construction. .

Whenever there is a bike lane, in the same direction as auto traffic, a bicyclist must use it when moving slower than normal traffic speed.

Leave the lane only: a. When necessary to pass another bicycle, vehicle, or pedestrian. b. When getting ready to turn left. c. When necessary to avoid parked cars or other objects.

Keep at least one hand on the handlebars. Bicyclists must ride on a permanently attached seat. Carry no passengers unless there is a separate seat. Riding on handlebars or foot-pegs is illegal and very dangerous!

Understanding Our New Bicycle Law California Law requires drivers leave three feet from all bicyclists without passing over the center line or they must “slow to a speed that is reasonable and prudent” before passing, which they can ONLY DO at a spot where they won’t endanger the cyclist.

Drivers who aren't sure whether they are more than three feet away should err on the side of caution and give more space than they think is necessary!
