“A Celebration of Color”

Kimberly Reading is a Cancer Awareness Advocate and a Board Certified Mastectomy Fitter. In her thirteen years of experience as a fitter, she worked with numerous women who had undergone breast surgery. It is a career that was very rewarding to her, but most importantly, it kept her connected by learning more about Breast Cancer.

Twenty-one years ago she lost her mother to the disease. With the knowledge she has gained over the past decade, she has been able to provide awareness to others. By hosting an annual “Pink Party” in her mother’s honor, she promotes and advocates for early detection of the disease. Kim also stresses the need to educate yourself on not only your body and health history, but also the importance of knowing your family history.

In January 2015, she released her first self-published book entitled, “Family Ties”. The book is an inspirational story that not only gives details of her own personal journey with cancer, but also her family’s history with several diagnoses of cancer. This is a story that she wants to share, that goes “beyond the pink ribbon.”

She currently promotes an initiative that focuses on the other colors of cancer. Kim wants to educate and ensure that people are being screened annually for diseases that can be cured and treated if they are detected at an early stage. She calls this her, “Color Journey”. Her goal is to enlighten others that each cancer not only has a ribbon color, but a month on the calendar that is dedicated to the awareness of the specific disease.

NC E A L Women Creating a BA Women are often asked this question, “How do you manage to keep it all together?”

Men scratch their heads and say, “Wow! How did she pull that off?” Children just naturally know that moms are “Super Hero’s”. Everyone depends on and has great expectations for women, and at the end of the day, women may feel as if they have ran a marathon.

Women, it is no secret that you create a safe place for your families, and that you do it well. Some of you are overworked, underpaid and unappreciated, but you continue to do because you love unconditionally. You stay too long in dead end relationships because you have hope; you never give up on your children because you see their potential. You make sacrifices for everyone except yourself, and you hold the light for your sister at the end of the tunnel because you can relate to her struggle.

Ladies, it is time to learn how to create a balance between, home, work, husband, children and extra-curricular activities. The economy has forced many women to find a job or two just to meet the needs of her family. Women of color have gone natural to save money where necessary. Long gone are the days of pampering: a massage, manicure, pedicure, facial, movie and lunch with a friend. Women sacrifice for everyone, and it is time for women to make sacrifices for self.

Organization is key to a professional balance, so begin this self-sacrifice by 12

purchasing a calendar. Then schedule a day to appreciate the body and make an appointment that includes a physical, yearly pap smear and mammogram, for early detection can save your life. Once that is complete, make an appointment to see the dentist. A healthy smile is priceless, and tooth decay can be toxic to the body. Next, find out if your employer or insurance offer a discount on a gym membership, and if so, then sign up. If not, then find the nearest park and exercise 30 minutes a day.

Creating a balance between jobs, home, significant others, children and extracurricular activities can be a daunting task.

When the work day has ended, it is over.

While home, work is over, so spend quality time with family. Only discuss work related issues if asked and keep responses to a minimum. Spend time with the children, inquiring about their day and activities, checking homework and signing agendas.

However, a scheduled bedtime is important, especially for small children. Keep the marriage fun, exciting and do not forget to keep dating your spouse. Have a date night at least once or twice a month, because extracurricular activities are important.

Such activities could include: fellowship at church, bowling, social engagements, etc., as they serve as stress-free experiences. If an activity becomes overwhelming, then simply choose another one.

5 Signs that Mom Might Need a Personal Finance Partner

By Janis Harlow, DMM, MBA Have you recently visited a parent and realized that it is taking him or her a lot longer to get around to doing things that never used to be an issue? It may not be a serious concern at first, but when financial matters start to slide, it can be an early indicator of dementia, depression, or other problems. Often it stems from a lack of familiarity with financial chores, especially when the financial partner in a marriage dies or becomes disabled, because in most marriages one person does that job.

No matter the cause, these are some signs that financial help may be needed.

Mary and Charles were married for many years. Mary was the social calendar manager and Charles took care of household maintenance and finances. When Charles passed away, Mary had to take over the things that she had never dealt with before.

On a visit to her mother some time later, her daughter, Ann, noticed: 1. Stacks of paperwork in various places that didn’t look organized.

Mary was not handling all the items that appear in the mail every day. She didn’t know how to create a system to manage it all.

2. Late fees, finance charges and unpaid bills.

Because she had no system, things were getting lost and even though she had money to pay the bills, she didn’t have the interest or skills to stay on top of it all. Mary’s home was not protected because, although she had received several notices, she had neglected to pay the insurance bill.

3. Numerous financial requests from charities.

It gave Mary a good feeling to donate to charity, but she didn’t realize that she was giving multiple times per year, and that new charities

were now asking for donations. She had no budget for giving and no idea how much was going out the door.

4. Un-deposited checks.

Ann found several checks that had never been taken to the bank, leaving her mother at risk for overdraft problems.

5. Receipts for a large number of Home Shopping television purchases.

Mary was lonely and shopping from home was a way to fill time and briefly make her feel happy.

Ann did not live near her mother, and had her own busy household to manage. She realized that her mother was not managing financially, and although she was physically able to live independently, she was going to need help with her personal affairs. Mary also had years and years of paperwork saved, and neither mother nor daughter was comfortable with knowing what to keep and what to get rid of.

Feeling the pressure mounting, she did some research and found the American Association of Daily Money Managers (www.AADMM.com).

These professionals bring order to chaos, and can work in conjunction with an older adult, an adult child or caregiver, financial planners, tax advisors, and attorneys, to provide the handson assistance that is sometimes needed, but at a lower cost.
