As the month of September was declared Child Support Month in the State of Delaware, I thought it appropriate to discuss the importance of receiving the child support benefits that you may be entitled to. Pursuant to Delaware law, Title 13 Delaware Code, Section 501, parents are required to support their children until the age of 18, unless still in high school, and then until the age of 19 or graduation from high school, whichever occurs first. If you are the custodial parent, meaning the children are residing in your home more than 50% of the time, then you are entitled to child support benefits from the other parent.

The calculation allows each parent to keep a minimum amount of income for their basic needs. Each child’s basic needs are taken into consideration before the parents may retain any additional income for themselves. The parties may always deviate from the child support calculation if it is determined to be in the best interest of the child.

The Family Court of the State of Delaware uses a Child Support Formula Calculation as a guide to determine how much support the custodial parent will receive. It gives you a general idea of what the support amount may be. It may not be the exact amount that the Family Court will order. It may be much higher or much lower because the Family Court will make the final decision based on the testimony presented at the mediation or hearing. You must be

Turn Holiday Stress to Holiday Success!

A new season brings much excitement, anxiety and for some depression as holidays are quickly approaching. To alleviate the stress plan accordingly.

If you realize that the holiday season creates stress for you, understanding your limitations will work in your favor.

If you will be shopping for the holidays, create a list of the items you are looking for and seek out the best deals. We are surrounded by diverse cultures and each one has different beliefs, values and ways of celebrating. At the end of the day, it is about the love we have for family and friends. Although you may think differently, it is not important to spend your last dollar on a gift for anyone. However, it is important to spend time with people you love, it is equally important to share with them how you appreciate them being a part of your life. It does not have to be a holiday to share precious moments with family and friends.

The stores are filled with decorations and gifts for the traditional holidays.

Remember only travel to familiar homes and areas, scan Halloween treats as a precaution for young treaters and remember to wear costumes that can be visible at night.

Thanksgiving is one of the most traveled holiday. Review the flight/ train/cruise schedules, purchase tickets 6

early and plan to travel during nonpeak times. Christmas is a time when people exchange gifts among family and friends. When purchases are made ask for gift receipts so that exchanges are a smooth process for gifts needing to be returned.

For those that feel the holiday season brings stress, anxiety and depression seek counseling early to prevent overwhelming episodes. Find opportunities to reflect on positive experiences in your life, create tranquil moments and spend time with those that you enjoy. There is a growing number of people who experience periods of sadness for a variety of reasons over the holidays. No need to feel ashamed, you are not alone; there is someone to assist and they are just a phone call away. Mental health services are equally as important as any other condition within the body. Do not ignore warning signs with regard to your health.

Finally, whether you choose to celebrate with family and friends doing traditional or non-traditional activities, just remember to have fun and act responsibly.

Maximizing Credit Scores: The TIME Factor

So what’s your number? Are you a 580? 840? Somewhere in between? I’m talking about your FICO credit score, the most commonly used credit rating by those who loan money or have a need to check on how well you pay your bills. I used to think that if I paid my bills on time, my credit score should be perfect, but there is a lot more to it than that. There are a number of factors used in your FICO score. The one I will discuss here is TIME. If you hold a credit card for 6 months, and someone else keeps an account open for 6 years, you will have a lower credit score, even if your on-time payment history is about the same. It can be difficult for young people to establish a credit rating simply because they have no track record. This is because lenders have a hard time judging your reliability based only on a short time span. If you stop using any form of credit, your score will also begin to decline.

By the same token, if you have an old account that is not being used, it will hurt your credit score if you close it, because it will lower your average account age. Try not to close your oldest account, unless it is costing you in monthly fees. If you do have a lot of unused or costly accounts to close or consolidate, try to spread out the closures over time, or expect a ding to your score.

The TIME factor represents 15% of the makeup of your credit score.
