What can help you stay at home?

You may be used to handling everything yourself, dividing up duties with your spouse, or relying on family members for help. But as circumstances change, it’s good to be aware of all the home care services available that might be of help such as the following.

Household Maintenance ~ keeping a household running smoothly takes a lot of work.

Transportation ~ this is a key issue for older adults.

Maybe you’re finding it hard to drive or don’t like to drive at night.

Personal Care ~ help with activities of daily living, such as dressing,bathing, feeding, or meal preparation.

Even if you have strong family support, be open to the idea of having other help too. Many people have an initial feeling of “not wanting strangers in the house.” But care giving can be physically and emotionally exhausting, especially if it is primarily on one person such as a spouse. Southern Healthy Eating Light King Ranch Chicken Casserole

Ingredients

2) Stir in chicken and next 6 ingredients; remove from heat.

1 large onion, chopped 1 large green bell pepper, chopped Vegetable cooking spray 2 cups chopped cooked chicken breasts 1 (10-ounce) can fat-free cream of chicken soup, undiluted 1 (10-ounce) can fat-free cream of mushroom soup, undiluted 1 (10-ounce) can diced tomato and green chiles 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 12 (6-inch) corn tortillas 1 (8-ounce) block reduced-fat Cheddar cheese, shredded

3) Tear tortillas into 1-inch pieces; layer one-third tortilla pieces in bottom of a 13- x 9-inch baking dish coated with cooking spray. Top with one-third chicken mixture and one-third cheese. Repeat layers twice.

4) Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes or until bubbly.

5) Note: Freeze casserole up to 1 month, if desired. Thaw in refrigerator overnight, and bake as directed.

Note: Serve with a veggie loaded salad and vinaigrette. For Preparation 1) Sauté onion and bell pepper in added Southwest flavor, whisk a few dashes of hot sauce into the a large skillet coated with cooking spray over medium-high heat dressing.

Your Home’s Fall Checklist Fall is the perfect time to take care of the little things that can make a big difference for you and your home. Most of the tasks listed below are well with-in the average person’s ability. But even if you choose to have a professional handle them, it’s worth the expense. You’ll save money -- and maybe even your life.

• Get your mind in the gutters.

Inspect and clean gutters and downspouts.

• Button up your overcoat.

Seal gaps and cracks around windows and doors with weather-stripping and caulk.

• Get on top of roof problems.

Inspect your roof for damaged or curled shingles, corroded flashing, or leaky vents.

• Walks the walks (and drives).

Take steps to repair damaged sidewalks, driveways, and steps.

• Chill out. Drain and winterize outdoor faucets and irrigation systems.

• Get your HVAC serviced.

This can save you money on your utility bills. Change your filters every month.

• Gather round the hearth.

Check fireplaces for soot or creosote build-up. Better yet, schedule a visit from a reputable chimney sweep.

• Keep the humidifier humming. Clean the plates or pads to ensure efficient operation.

• Head-off gas problems. If you have a gas-fired room heater, have it inspected by a pro. Also, perform any routine maintenance recommended by the maker.

• Keep the wood fires burning brightly. Wood stoves are making a comeback. To avoid a deadly situation, be sure to inspect yours before firing it up.

Adult Day Care Benefits Everyone Adult day care offer services to people who live alone at home during the day. It’s a great option over sitting at home in front of a TV or for those who cannot stay home by themselves.

Adult day care provides meals, activities, and social interaction in a facility where they’re monitored by trained staff and licensed nurses.

The results of a recent study demonstrates that adult day care services are helpful in reducing the level of stress on family caregivers. After three months of use, family caregivers experienced fewer depressive symptoms than those who did not use adult day care services. The benefits were still present after 1 year.

The Benefits for Caregivers & Patients • Reduced stress • Decreased symptoms of depression • Patients were more alert • Patients interact socially Caregiver Benefits Family caregivers were extremely positive when evaluating the adult day care programs. They reported that their relatives enjoyed the social interaction, the physical activities and cognitive stimulation.

Common Concerns for Families • Difficulty transporting the person to and from the facility • Concerns that a loved one attending might be harder to manage at home when the day had ended Conclusion: Only a small number of family members reported either to be an issue after the study, and 66 percent experienced less stress on days that their loved ones attended adult day care compared to the times they did not.

Savvy Senior Tech Tips There’s a scam going around where a person will call you saying they are a from Microsoft and that your computer has been compromised.

They will then try and get you to let them onto your computer and hassle you to pay them.

Beware of these types of scams. Anytime someone calls you unsolicited regarding your computer (or wanting any of your personal information for that matter) don’t engage them, just hangup. If you are concerned that the call may have been legitimate call the contact number you have for that service such as your anti-virus company (tip: Microsoft will never call you!). Only let people you know and trust access your computer remotely.
