ON THE COVER

We’re excited to feature the Civil Law Section CLE on this month’s newsletter cover! This memorable event, held earlier in November, spotlighted the CLE titled "View From the Bench: Do's & Don’ts of Motions for Summary Judgment and the Essentials for Friendly Suits." The session featured the esteemed Judge Luis Singleterry, who delivered an engaging and insightful presentation filled with practical advice and judicial perspectives. Notably, this CLE shattered attendance records, becoming one of the most well-attended events in the Civil Law Section’s history! Judge Singleterry’s expertise, paired with a lively and interactive atmosphere, made this event truly unforgettable. Generous sponsors, dedicated planning by the Civil Law Section Chairs Henry Falcon and Guillermo Tijerina, and the hard work of HCBA staff ensured the event’s success. We’re thrilled to celebrate this exceptional CLE on the cover and look forward to many more impactful events like this in the future Flip to the cover story for a closer look at the highlights from this outstanding program!

A GLIMPSE OF THE PAST MONTH

The Civil Law Section's CLE event earlier this month was a remarkable success, bringing together one of the largest turnouts to date for the section! Titled "View From the Bench: Do's & Don’ts of Motions for Summary Judgment and the Essentials for Friendly Suits," this dynamic session was led by the esteemed Judge Luis Singleterry, who provided invaluable insights from the bench.

Judge Singleterry’s presentation delved deep into the nuances of motions for summary judgment, offering attendees practical guidance on what to do—and what to avoid—when preparing these critical filings. He also shared key takeaways on handling friendly suits effectively, emphasizing the importance of precision, professionalism, and judicial expectations in these matters. Attendees had the opportunity to engage in a lively discussion, gaining clarity and actionable advice to enhance their legal strategies.

A special thank you to Dr. Omar D. Vidal for sponsoring the delicious lunch provided during the event, ensuring everyone was well-fed and ready to learn. We also want to recognize OG Marketing for capturing the event with stunning photography that truly reflects the energy and engagement of the day.

This CLE event was a testament to the commitment of the Civil Law Section Chairs, Henry Falcon and Guillermo Tijerina, along with the HCBA staff, who worked tirelessly to make it one of the most well attended programs to date. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to its success! We look forward to seeing you at future events.

The Family Law Section launched the 2024-2025 Bar Year with an incredible CLE event, “Family Law in Focus: The View from the Counsel's Table.” Held earlier this month, this inaugural event was a resounding success, drawing a strong turnout from members eager to engage with the panel and gain valuable insights.

The panel featured three distinguished incoming district court judges Judge-Elect Orlando Esquivel, Judge-Elect Juan Alvarez, and Judge-Elect Nereida Singleterry-Lopez. Each brought their unique perspectives and expertise to the table, discussing the evolving dynamics of family law and providing attendees with practical advice on courtroom expectations and emerging challenges. Their thoughtful, candid responses made the discussion both insightful and inspiring. The session was skillfully moderated by Savannah Gonzalez, the Family Law Section Chair, whose thoughtful questions and poised facilitation kept the conversation engaging and relevant. Savannah’s leadership set the tone for an impactful event that resonated deeply with the audience.

A special thank you goes to Family Wizard, whose generous sponsorship of the lunch added to the welcoming atmosphere. Attendees were also treated to a presentation by Kevin Dorsey, the Family Wizard representative, who offered a comprehensive overview of the app's features and its significance in streamlining co-parenting communication. His insights highlighted how this tool continues to make a difference for families navigating challenging situations.

This inaugural CLE was more than just an event it was a celebration of the Family Law Section’s dedication to providing quality programming and fostering meaningful dialogue. We extend our gratitude to everyone who attended and helped make this first CLE of the year such a triumph. Stay tuned for more exciting opportunities in the months ahead!

This month, the Child Welfare Section of the Hidalgo County Bar Association hosted a heartwarming blanket drive benefiting the children of the Rainbow Room, and it was an incredible success thanks to the generosity of our members and community. With two convenient drop-off locations—The Child Protection Court of the Rio Grande Valley West and the Hidalgo County Bar Association's Office—we saw an outpouring of support as individuals arrived with donations in hand, eager to make a difference. Each blanket collected represents a warm hug for a child in need, and we couldn’t have done it without you. To all who donated, your kindness and compassion bring hope and comfort to those who need it most. Thank you for standing with us to create a brighter future for the children in our community.

CHIEF JUSTICE DORI CONTRERAS

It has been an honor and a privilege to serve on the 13th Court of Appeals for twenty-two years I will conclude my service on December 31, 2024, but I will not retire from the legal profession I will be establishing a mediation practice principally outofSanAntonio.Someofyouthatareold enough will remember that I served as a mediator from 1997-2002 along with my law practice Of course, a lot has changed since then, particularly remote mediation But I will adapt and am looking forward to my new chapter. I hope I will continue to see manyofyouinmynewcapacity

I was first elected to the court as an associate justice in 2002 and was reelected in 2008 and 2014. I was elected Chief Justice in 2018, notably as the first woman to serve in that position At the time of my election, I was the second Latina to be elected chief justice in the state of Texas Service as a chief justice on an appellate court comes with special responsibilities and challenges In addition to handling a share of the court’s docket, chief justices manage the court’s financial matters and dayto-day administrative activities, including management of staff.

I am proud of my service and record During my six-year term as Chief, the court ranked as one of the most efficient in the state. Each year we met or exceeded the performance measures mandated by the state, meaning we timely disposed of cases. Notwithstanding the challenges we faced due to COVID, coupled with the statewide ransomware attack in 2020, we continued disposing of cases timely and efficiently.

In 2022, I was honored to be elected chair of the Council of Chief Justices, which is made up of the fourteen chief justices in Texas. Every other year, the council selects a chair who serves as their representative and spokesperson Because the legislature had underfunded the intermediate appellate courts for many years, our top priority in the 2023 legislative session was to obtain additional funding to enable us to pay competitve salaries to our staff. I spent a great deal of time at the Capitol, meeting with Senators and Representatives My efforts paid off as we were successful in obtaining the necessary funding that will continue to benefit the court for years to come

I am currently the vice-president of the Council of Chief Judges for the State Courts of Appeal CCJSCA’s Motto is “once a chief, always a chief,” which means that despite my impending retirement, I will continue moving up the ladder to eventually become the first Latina President of this prestigious organization.
