ARTICLES, MOVIES AND BOOKS REVIEWS FOR OCTOBER
MOVIE REVIEW BY GREGORY TURLEY In case you can’t wait for the movie release on October 20, the book Killers of the Flower Moon is a mix of History, True Crime, and Unsolved Mystery. If it were a Netflix series it might be a cross of Yellowstone and Mindhunter. Set in early 20th century Oklahoma, it revolves around Osage County in the northeastern part of the state. Prior to Oklahoma statehood in 1907, the area was called Indian Territory where a number of Native American tribes were forcefully relocated as part of an expanding United States. The Osage had originally been relocated to Kansas but through business dealings in the 1870s were able to buy 1.5 million acres of tribal land in Indian Territory for 70 cents an acre. In preparation for Oklahoma statehood, the tribal lands held collectively were to be broken up by a system of “Allotment” whereby tribal members would then individually hold title to land. In that process, the Osage were able to negotiate that they as sellers would retain the mineral rights. That area of Northeastern Oklahoma would become a great oil patch, making millionaires of names like Phillips, Getty, and Sinclair as well as many Osage tribal members. The specifics of the book involve the Burkhart family, an Osage family. Mollie Burkhart, an Osage tribal member, discovers that her sister Anna Brown, has been shot in the head. At nearly the same time, another Osage named Charles Whitehorn is found dead - also shot in the head. Both victims were wealthy Osage Indians in their 30s. Soon thereafter Mollie’s mother Lizzie dies unexpectedly in her 40s. It is believed that she, who was otherwise healthy, was possibly poisoned. After local officials made no headway on solving the murders, in 1923, the Osage Council petitioned a relatively new U.S. agency called the Bureau of Investigation for assistance. The 29year-old acting director at the time was a former Library of Congress clerk named J. Edgar Hoover. Hoover, looking for a win to save his career, named one of his most experienced agents, Tom White, to head the case.
BY GREGORY TURLEY
Tom White leaps off the pages as larger than life. John Wayne was perhaps inspired by him. An actual former Texas Ranger, Tom White seeks to pierce the insular ways, the distrust of outsiders, the Native/Settler conflicts and the practical limitations of police work in those early days. He becomes very involved with the local power broker William Hale, known as the “King of the Osage Hills” as well as Mollie’s own husband Ernest Burkhart and his brother Bryan Burkhart. The last third of the book is the most unexpected part and is the real hook. If this sounds like a traditional true crime show that will be wrapped up in 48 minutes, then you’ll be in for a surprise. The movie is directed by Martin Scorsese, and it is expected to be similar to his other movies where there is a murky Good/Evil divide (Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street). It will also star familiar actors Leonardo Di Caprio (Ernest) and Robert De Niro (Hale) as well as Native American actor Lily Gladstone (Mollie). Get your popcorn early as it will have a longer run time of 3:26. In case you don’t like to read nonfiction, take hope! The outsized success
of
other
nonfiction
books
(Hamilton
biography,
Oppenheimer biography) turned into very creative big-budget stories on stage and film bodes well for this nonfiction adaptation.
