lthough a lot of us may try to forget our age as the years go by, when it comes to reaping the financial rewards of getting older, you’re wise to keep certain age-related milestones top of mind.
But as might be expected, for the rules and regulations surrounding retirement withdrawals and government benefits, it’s not as simple as just marking a birthday. It’s important to understand what you can do — and when — to help assure you don’t make a costly mistake and miss out on all the economic perks you’re entitled to. Here’s a checklist of basic ages to keep in mind and the significance of each: AGE 55:
If you have assets in an employer-sponsored qualified retirement plan, such as a 401(k), and leave your job (called separation of service), you can take a distribution without paying the 10 percent penalty for early withdrawal. You will, however, pay income taxes on the money.

Retirement?
Dates And Deadlines
By Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz
13
Hi Class Living
AGE 59 1/2: At this age, you can take distributions from your qualified retirement plan or traditional IRA without penalty. Once again, you will pay income taxes on the earnings or any contributions that were tax deductible. If you have a Roth IRA and have held it for five years, you can withdraw these earnings both penalty- and tax-free.
Security, you can still apply for Medicare alone. Ideally, you should apply three months before the month you turn 65. Just call or visit your local Social Security office, or call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213. You can’t apply for Medicare online at this point. Note: You can choose to decline Part B coverage, but you may pay a penalty for late enrollment.
AGE 62: This is the earliest date you can begin taking Social Security benefits, unless you are disabled. Just remember that if you do, your payout will be permanently reduced by approximately 25 percent. And if you’re still working and earn beyond a certain limit, benefits are further reduced. You can apply for Social Security when you’re within four months of the first full month that you turn 62 years old. Before you decide to take Social Security at this age, consider how much more you could make over time by waiting. Go to www. ssa.gov for a convenient online calculator to help you determine the best time to start taking your benefits.
AGE 70: As mentioned above, Social Security benefits don’t increase beyond this age. So if you haven’t already, you’ll want to begin taking your benefits now.
AGES 65-67: Here’s where FRA --”full retirement age”-- comes in. This is the age you can begin receiving your full Social Security retirement benefits. FRA ranges from 65 to 67 depending on your birth year. It’s also important to note that if you delay receiving Social Security beyond your FRA, your benefits will continue to increase until you reach age 70. When you want to apply, there’s now an easy online application at www.ssa.gov. AGE 65: At 65, you’re eligible for Medicare -- a very significant milestone considering the high cost of health insurance and medical care. If you’re already receiving Social Security, you’re automatically enrolled in Parts A and B. There’s nothing you need to do. If not, you can apply for both Social Security and Medicare at the same time. However, if you prefer to delay Social May - June 2010
AGE 70 1/2: This is the age when you’re required to begin taking money from tax-advantaged retirement plans, such as a traditional IRA, 401(k), Roth 401(k) 403(b), SEP, SIMPLE or 457 plan. The minimum you can withdraw -- your Required Minimum Distribution or RMD -- is determined by a formula based on life expectancy and the amount you have in tax-advantaged accounts. Your tax professional can help you determine your RMD. Also, some financial companies provide online calculators. You absolutely must take your first RMD by April 1 of the year after you turn 70 1/2, or you will face a hefty 50-percent penalty! And if you wait until that date, you must then take your second RMD by Dec. 31 of that same year. So, it’s really important to pay attention to this deadline. On the plus side, you don’t have to take an RMD from a 401(k) if you’re still working and never from a Roth IRA. And just for the record, RMD regulations were suspended for 2009, but only for 2009. Being mindful of age-related dates and deadlines is only part of the picture. You also need to sit down and review your own financial picture --retirement accounts, Social Security benefits, other sources of income -- and create a retirement budget and withdrawal strategy. It’s not only about missing something, it’s also about taking every opportunity now to secure your financial future. ∆

Hold You Back
By Jan Denise
T
he periodical assessment of where you are and where you want to be can spotlight differences between you and your partner, but you don’t have to let those differences lure you off track. Thriving couples don’t; they trust each other.
“It’s tough to maintain your enthusiasm when your partner doesn’t share it,” is a common complaint. Or is it an excuse? Lust is the real temptress, but a partner might seal the deal, “Come on, you can start that next week when you have more time.” Ask your sweetheart – before you’ve taken off your sneakers and mentally curled up in front of the fireplace – to help you keep your priorities; and promise to help your sweetheart keep his (or hers). This is what partners do – they trust and strengthen each other! Imagine the consequences of letting your hopes fade; and then imagine the consequences of realizing your dream. Which life do you really want to live, and share with your sweetheart? You can always find a reason to postpone what you want, but the best time to work toward it is now. So, when you can’t quite manage a full step in the right direction, settle for a partial one. The toughest part is making time and getting started. Try telling yourself that you can spend 30 minutes – instead of 60 – biking or studying or meditating. Once you get into the flow, you might not stop until you have to go to the bathroom.

Orga A Bridal
S
howering the bride with gifts for her new life is a wonderful wedding tradition that dates back well over 100 years.
Legend has it that a young Dutch couple wanted to wed, but her father disapproved because the young man was too poor. Friends and family disagreed with the father and came up with a creative way to give them her dowry. They showered the bride-to-be by filling a trunk with treasured items of their own that they thought the couple would need in their new life together. Touched by the outpouring of support, the girl’s father relented and allowed them to marry. Today, wedding showers are considered de rigueur. If you’re the maid of honor, this is one of the most important jobs you have. If the bride has not chosen a maid of honor, but people still want to shower the bride, any close friend or relative can take the lead in organizing one. No matter what your official role, if you are in charge of organizing the event, you’re in for one hefty to-do list. How do you fit it in with May - June 2010
everything else on your list without either spending a fortune or driving yourself crazy? The secret: Allow for a little imperfection. By focusing on the relative handful of things that really are important and making sure those are buttoned up, you can relax and let go of the hundred or so other minor details that have the potential to make you nuts and cost you a fortune. We’ve broken down the planning process into five simple, low-cost steps. Focus on these, and your shower is sure to be a success. Make a List of Attendees and Pick the Optimal Date. The first thing you must do is sit down with the bride (or the bride’s mother/ sister) and make a list of who should be invited to the shower and make sure that you have the e-mail address or phone

number for each person. Because the vast majority of attendees will be able to be reached digitally, you can take a quick poll via e-mail on the best date and time for the event. Pick three dates/times and ask people to respond by a certain deadline as to which dates work for them. If there are important guests, like grandparents and great-grandparents who are not on e-mail, call them to get their input as well. Go with the date that works for most (or the most important) people. Organize Invites Digitally. In this day and age, there is no need to go to the expense of printing invitations. Set aside an hour one evening about a month to two months before the event to create and send e-invitations. Sites like www. Pingg.com help you create and send lovely ones for free and manage RSVPs online, too. Be sure to add a short line to the bottom of your e-invitation, letting people know how to contact you if they’re interested in helping out. If there are one or two people on the list who are not reachable via e-mail, you can design and print your own invitation using a free invitation-design service like www.InvitationLand.com, and then send it via regular mail. Identify Your Team and Assign Roles. Most attendees would love the opportunity to help out; after all, it is another opportunity for them to shower the bride with love. But you will never know 31

Diamond Engagement Ring
by Tracy Strong
W
hile it’s not in the male nature to ask for directions, when it comes to shopping for a diamond engagement ring, a little guidance can go a long way. Use the tips below as a map to the perfect diamond for the one you love. Know Your Bride You know her favorite restaurant, the color she wears the most and her biggest pet peeve, but do you know her jewelry style? If you haven’t paid attention before, now is the time to take notice of what kind of jewelry she already wears. Take a look through her jewelry box. What color metal does she favor? Do her pieces tend to be classic or modern, minimalistic or ornate? Another easy way to narrow down her preferences is to ask her friends and coworkers. Women talk. Those closest to her are bound to have an idea of what kind of diamond she desires. Also, go to the mall together and casually browse a few jewelry stores, taking note of what diamond jewelry catches her eye. Be sure to be casual, as you don’t want to ruin the surprise! Understand the 4Cs When shopping for a diamond engagement ring, it is important to do your homework beforehand. A little research will lead
you on the path to being a knowledgeable, confident consumer. The first step is to learn all about the 4Cs. The internet is a great resource for information about purchasing a diamond. To help you get started, here is a quick look at the 4Cs – the factors that together determine a diamond’s beauty and value. Cut Cut is often thought to mean the shape of the diamond, but it is actually a technical quality that measures how well the diamond cutter did his or her job. Many experts will tell you that cut is the most important of the 4Cs, as a skilled cutter will unleash the maximum fire and brilliance from within a diamond. Regardless of shape, a well cut diamond will sparkle with an amazing radiance. A diamond cutter must place each of the stone’s facets and angles, which act as light-dispersing mirrors, in exact geometric relation to one another to maximize the diamond’s beauty. A poorly cut diamond (too deep or too
27
Hi Class Living
shallow) will lose light that spills though the side or bottom. Color The most subjective of the 4Cs, color is determined by the degree to which a diamond approaches colorlessness. While most diamonds appear white, virtually all have slight traces of color. The degree of colorlessness is measured on a letter scale beginning with D and moving through the alphabet to Z. The degree of colorlessness is very difficult to discern with the naked eye. Diamonds with a color grade of D, E or F are very rare and therefore more expensive. However, well-cut diamonds
with good clarity in any color grade can be quite dazzling in their own right. While white diamonds are the most popular choice for engagement rings, diamonds are found in the Earth in every color of the rainbow. Deeply colored diamonds, such as pink, blue and yellow, are known as “fancies” and are especially rare and valuable. Clarity Clarity refers to the degree to which a diamond is free from “birthmarks” or inclusions that naturally occurred when the diamond was formed in the Earth millions or billions of years ago. These
How To Keep Your Diamond Sparkling As the most cherished of all possessions, a diamond engagement ring needs proper care in order to maintain its amazing fire and brilliance. Often worn every day, a diamond can obtain a buildup of soap, cosmetics and skin oils that will dull its appearance. The Diamond Information Center suggests giving your diamond a thorough cleaning at least once a month using any one of these simple and inexpensive methods.
rinsing is necessary. Over-the-Counter Jewelry Cleaners
Ask your jeweler for a liquid jewelry cleaner made especially for diamonds and follow the instructions on the label. A good cleaner is designed to remove loose dirt and dissolve any oils or residue on the stone.
Professional Cleaning
Simply put – this is the best option. It is a good idea to bring the ring to your jeweler for a yearly checkup to be sure that prongs are not weak or mountings loose. Your jeweler can give it a thorough cleaning at that time. Many professional jewelers use an ultrasonic cleaner, a method that involves a special machine using a high-frequency vibration to clean the ring. The ring is enclosed in a small cup with cleaning solution and in just a minute, any dirt and oils are removed from the stone, leaving it sparkling and clean. Cold Water Soak with Household Ammonia
Prepare a half-and-half solution of cold water and household ammonia and soak the ring for thirty minutes. Lift the ring out and clean gently around the front and back of the mounting with a small, soft brush. This will dislodge any stubborn dirt. Give the ring a second swish through the solution and let it dry on a paper towel. No May - June 2010
Detergent Bath
The simplest cleaning method for your diamond is to soak your jewelry in a small bowl of warm, sudsy water combined with any mild liquid detergent. Using a toothbrush or other soft brush, gently brush the ring all around the setting while it is in the water. After its bubble bath, put the ring in a fine wire strainer and rinse thoroughly under warm running water (the strainer provides protection for the ring from slipping down the drain). Pat your ring dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Even though diamonds are the hardest substances known to man, a diamond will scratch another diamond. It is therefore important that a diamond engagement ring not be stored with other jewelry since it can be scratched. Also, a diamond engagement ring should never be worn while doing heavy work. Points are vulnerable to chipping and even everyday activity can loosen a setting. Use these simple methods to keep your diamond looking its best, and it will reward you with years of wearing pleasure.

inclusions can look like tiny crystals, feathers or clouds, and most are not visible to the naked eye. Because diamonds are one of nature’s miracles, most diamonds do contain some inclusions. Diamonds with the fewest inclusions are graded as VVS1 or VVS2, those on the other end of the scale are graded I1 or I3. The fewer the inclusions, the rarer the gem. Carat Carat indicates the weight, and therefore the size of the diamond. One carat weighs 0.2 grams. Jewelers, however, refer to stones using points: 100 points equal one carat, 50 points equal a half carat, and so on. Keep in mind that 82% of women prefer a diamond of 1/2 carat or more, according to research. Set a Budget While deciding on a budget for any gift is a very personal matter, most men agree that the suggested two month’s salary is an appropriate amount for a purchase as important as a diamond engagement ring. This guideline can be used as a starting point, but no matter how much you spend, it is most important to find the ring that is right for her. With the variety of diamonds available, and therefore array of price points, you are sure to find the ring that fits both her style and your budget. Find a Reputable Jeweler Finding a reputable jeweler is an important step in a smart diamond purchase. A reputable jeweler will be knowledgeable about diamonds and will guide you through the entire buying process. If you do not already have a jeweler, word of mouth is a great way to do research-ask friends, relatives and co-workers. You are bound to know someone who has purchased a diamond and can make a recommendation. You can also locate a reputable jeweler in your area by doing a little research on the Web. ∆ 30
ORGANIZING ‚ From Pg. 25 unless you ask. That is why we recommend putting a line at the bottom of your e-invite letting people know that they should contact you if they’re interested in lending a hand. Start with those who responded positively and enlist their help with one of the following areas: (1) hosting the party at their house -- if you can’t accommodate everyone at yours, (2) making a dish, (3) planning a game, (4) helping the bride stay organized on the day. If too few people reply, reach out to others in the wedding party or other family members to see if they can help. Plan for Potluck. Food is the glue at a shower -- and it is so much more meaningful when others can make a little something with love for the event. Make a potluck-sign-up sheet and circulate it. The list should include sign-up space for one or two appetizers, one or two side dishes, one or two main dishes and at least one cake or set of cupcakes. Put your name down next to one or two dishes to get the ball rolling. Map Out the Agenda. The best showers have allotted time for chitchat, food, presents and games. If you don’t have at least a rough schedule, you’re likely going to end up having to rush through something. Decide what shower games you want to play. If more than one is to be played, split up the planning so that it doesn’t all fall on one person’s shoulders. Think about how to keep the gift-opening process moving along. This is the part of the shower that takes the longest, and guests can start to lose interest if it is poorly organized. Those who signed up to help the bride stay organized on the day of the shower should be at the ready -- handing her gifts, taking away wrapping paper in an orderly fashion, keeping a list of who gave what and making the ribbon bouquet. For a green and speedy twist, have everyone put their gifts in muslin bags tied with a ribbon so that unwrapping is less timeconsuming. ∆

Party Props By Mary Carol Garrity
W
ould you love to have friends over more often, but are intimidated by the thought of entertaining?
While pulling together a party does take some time and effort, it is much easier if you have the right tools on hand to set a fabulous table. Here’s a list of must-have entertaining essentials. CHARGERS Perhaps it’s the way they anchor a place setting or elevate the entire look of a table, but I consider chargers an absolute essential, whether I’m entertaining casually or formally. I’ve used all manner of things for chargers, from clay plant saucers to antique silver trays. But my favorites are simple rattan chargers. They are loaded with texture yet are so neutral they look sensational on both formal and casual tables and in every season. LINENS Instead of using full tablecloths, which are a hassle to clean and iron, I use a 52-inch square tablecloth turned on the diagonal at the center of my table. This smaller cloth size brings color to the table yet still allows the beautiful wood of the table to show. You’ll also need a selection of cloth napkins. Start with a set of white
cotton napkins you can bleach, then slowly expand your collection with napkins in different colors and patterns. DISHES If you don’t have a set of plain white dishes, put this at the very top of your list. White dishes work magic on the table because they look sensational all by themselves, or you can completely change their look simply by pairing them with different accent plates, linens, accessories or stemware. For instance, in the summer, zip up your white dishes by combining them with blue-and-white china salad plates and apple-green table linens. In the fall, show your white dishes with russet napkins and brown transferware serving pieces. In winter, make them more elegant by adding in gold and silver accents, or make them whimsical by adding holiday-themed dessert plates and napkins. STEMWARE If you have a smaller budget and limited storage space, invest in clear glass stemware that has strong, clean lines because they will look marvelous with 72

Slimming Down By Sharon Mosley
D
oes this make me look fat? Who hasn’t uttered those words on one or two occasions? No matter what your size, or your age, we all want to look our best.
And yes, there are some real secrets to slimming down on the fashion front. This season, Sher Canada, Chico’s style expert, offers her tips on new ways to shape up and look fabulous. Here are some of her best bets when it comes to slimming down. Start with column dressing This is one of my personal favorite tips that I’ve used in my own wardrobe for years. Simply put, it’s wearing the same color on top and bottom -- then topping it off with a great cardigan or jacket and wonderful accessories. Column dressing “creates a longer, leaner look, even in white,” she says. Metallic silver and gray is my alternative to black in the spring. Style it Canada says to push up those sleeves, wear heels with your slim-leg jeans and pile on the jewelry. It’s the little things that mean the most when it comes to creating a stylish spring look, even when you’re wearing the most classic clothes. Try teaming oversized accessories with your professional suits for a more up-to-date style.
Throw in a trend Update your wardrobe with at least one new trendy item that suits your own fashion personality. Canada suggests the “modern-in-the-moment, must-have pant” on the spring horizon: “an incredibly comfortable cargo that’s chic with satin.” And the jean du jour? A slim-leg, zippered ankle jean. Balance is critical Hopefully, you’ve already figured out what “proportions” look good on you. Cropped jackets over flared pants? Long, soft tops over skinny pants? Then tweak your favorite pieces and take it to the next level: “The key is the high-low rule,” says Canada. “Build your look around a single star piece, and balance it with basics.” Get energized with color No, you don’t have to wear black to feel slim and trim in your clothes. Break out of that style rut and mix it up a little bit... even if you wear a pop of a purple sequin tank and cardigan over your black pants. Citron is another way to give your wardrobe an unexpected twist: “Citron always 43

Shoeing Off:
Shoe Trends By Sharon Mosley
R
eady to put a little spring in your step? Bette Midler is famous for saying, “Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world!” It’s so true. New shoes are an instant way to totally change your outlook on life.
With spring footwear you can slip into plenty of fashion attitude. And since these shoes can really be dramatic, you may want to buy a great pair of shoes and THEN buy the outfit to go with them. Here are the trends to watch: Peep-toe Booties They are still a big retail hit. While you may have been wearing these with tights for winter, it’s time to get those pedicures and let your toes breathe again. These open-toe, boot-cut shoes have high impact, especially when worn with short skirts or shorts. We’re talking some really great toecleavage opportunities, here.
Platforms pump it up If you’re into high heels, then you’ll love the new heights in which shoe designers are taking their pumps and sandals. With a wedge or platform to boost comfort, high heels have never been more of a wearable option. My advice is to stick to 4-inch heels or less. Lady Gaga may get away with wearing 6-inch, armadillo-skin heels, but then most of us aren’t so gaga about falling down and breaking bones all for the sake of fashion. 42
Frills and Thrills Glamour counts this spring, and when your shoes have major drama, then you really don’t have to worry about what you’re wearing! Check out all the bows, ruffles, zippers, jewels and lace. And remember, a little extra attention lavished on your shoes does go a long way. May - June 2010

SHOEING OFF — From Pg. 39 Brighten up Another big shoe trend: footwear that pops in vivid blues, reds, purples, pinks and oranges. In suede (yes, even for spring), these saturated hues are definitely a style pick-me-up for the winter weary. But if you’re not interested in being in the bright shoe spotlight, you can still tone it down a notch by wearing natural nudes, browns, grays or metallics and still get that extra punch of subdued color. Get skinned There are lots of snakeskin shoes making their way into sophisticated spring wardrobes. In colors like turquoise or purple, dyed snakeskin is truly eye-catching. But black and silver skins are also turning up their heels in artful combinations. And then there is always that armadillo. Dressy gladiators This is another footwear trend that has been around the fashion arena for a while. But this spring, gladiators still capture our imagination with colorful alternatives that rock both casual and dressy clothes. The knee-high versions are the newest way to step out in style. Clear it up A spring favorite this season is the transparent trend with shoes that exude a futuristic appeal in clear vinyls; they are anything but flimsy from heels to flats. And these Lucite shoes may be your best bet yet! Just think they will go with everything...

Accessories shape up Yes, you can wear a belt and get the lean look, too. “Think you’ve lost your waistline?” asks Canada. “Think again.” She suggests experimenting with “slouch” belts hooked on top of your stomach -- “not too high, not too low. The slight dip will slim your waistline,” she says. Stretch or chain belts are great when worn underneath a shirt or jacket to show off the buckle and hide the elastic.
Casual Fashions for Summer
Scarf it up Talk about a way to add a lot of personality and variety to those basic “column” pieces! Canada advises wearing scarves in a natural way: “You want a scarf to look as if it just fell into place -- even if it didn’t.” She also finds that uneven ends form a slimming vertical line. “Even ends cut you in half.” So, if you only buy one accessory, make it a scarf. It’s instant glamour! ∆

Curb appeal is just what the name implies: the appeal of a house and landscape as you view them from the street or curb. It has nothing to do with the size or grandeur of the house. Instead, it relates to the sense of balance and harmony of the landscaping with the house; call it the ying and yang. It’s often a personal experience, sometimes difficult to put into words. Many

times what gives a house curb appeal is the collective subtleties throughout the landscape. Here are some specifics to help you zero in on making your own landscape more “curb appealing.” Scale When plants and trees are of an appropriate size to the house, or “in scale,” they are neither too large nor too small. Trees and shrubs shouldn’t overpower the house, yet at the same time, you shouldn’t have to strain to notice them. Balance I refer to balance in a landscape as “visual weight.” You don’t have to have a symmetrical, mirror image of the right-side plantings with the left, although in a formal landscape this is often the case. For most homes, an informal landscape is more appropriate and inviting from the street. Symmetry can still be achieved by placing trees, shrubs or even flowers so that generally what’s on one side mimics the other, through size, form, layers, texture and color.
Color One of the easiest ways to help create curb appeal is to choose plant colors that complement the house, without being distracting. In fact, in a house with curb appeal, Curb appeal has the landscape plants blend together seamlessly with nothing to do the house color scheme. Don’t place much weight on with the size or flower color; it’s fleeting, after all. Instead, choose plants grandeur of the for their foliage color, and remember to consider their house. Instead, fall display.
it relates to the sense of balance and harmony of the landscaping with the house.
Curves In a formal landscape, straight lines are the norm rather than the exception. But homes with curb appeal are most often characterized by soft, eyepleasing curved walks and beds. They imply, “Stroll on up here, have a seat and stay awhile. You’re welcome here.” Conversely, straight lines say, “Hurry up, get your business done and move on.” Odd Numbers When planting beds, especially when using shrubs or trees, think in terms of odd-numbered quantities. From a design standpoint, our eye tends to be more comfortable with odd numbers of plants. In May - June 2010
most home landscapes, a more informal, asymmetrical look and feel is appropriate. Odd-numbered plantings help to accomplish this. The exception would be a formal landscape design, when you are deliberately trying to achieve symmetry — in which case even numbers and mirror images work best.
Layers On the theme of casual balance, layers mimic nature, and nature is the best case of curb appeal on a grand scale. Layers abound, from groundcovers to the tallest trees. A variety of layers will make a hugely positive difference.
Variety Speaking of variety, landscapes that please the eye do so by mixing things up. But don’t overdo it; just like loud colors, too many plant types can be confusing and distracting to the eye. A few groupings of different plants, trees and shrubs provide enough change without going overboard. If you’re ready to add personality and charm to your front yard, start by figuring out what’s not working in the current landscape. Then apply the concepts above and you’re on your way to having your own “curb-appealing” landscape. ∆

Suite Dreams By Mary Carol Garrity
I
f you want
to turn a boring bedroom into a beautiful and functional private sanctuary, here’s how: MAKE THE SPACE WORK First figure out how you want to use the space in your bedroom suite. Do you want a quiet oasis where you can get lost in a book? Is this the spot where you and your family will congregate to watch latenight TV? Will you need a spot to set up your laptop to answer your e-mails or do online shopping? Once you determine how you want to live in this spacious suite, configure your furnishings to meet your objective. May - June 2010
CREATE A BEAUTIFUL BED The bed should be the star of the show in your master suite. To give a poster bed Old World charm, hang gorgeous drapery panels from the canopy so that the bed becomes a little room inside the larger room, cozy and snug. If your bed is large or tall, treat it to bedding that’s every bit as regal. Then flank the bed with similarly scaled side tables because tiny bedside tables will be dwarfed by the bed. One of my favorite tricks is to
48
Transform your bedroom into a private morning room, where you could lounge in your pajamas while enjoying coffee, and reading the newspaper. use a ladies’ writing desk as a bedside table because desks can hold their own against a large bed and give you ample space for a lamp, alarm clock and accents. CREATE HARMONY If your suite is divided into two distinct spaces, give each area its own use and personality, then tie them together through your color palette. Pick two or three hues, then repeat them throughout the space through your paint, textiles, artwork and accessories. For instance, if the
sitting-room portion of the suite features sage-green walls and a cream ceiling, in the bedroom portion of the space paint the walls cream and the ceiling sage-green. Then weave both colors into your upholstered furnishings, curtains and bedding. I like to use a variety of fabrics and patterns, mixing stripes, plaids, solids and florals, so the room doesn’t feel “matchy.” PERSONALIZE WITH ACCESSORIES: Because your bedroom suite it out of the public eye, you have more freedom 72

oderate alcohol consumption may be good for your heart, but new research suggests that it doesn’t appear to offer the same protective benefits for the brain.
While moderate amounts of alcohol don’t necessarily help the brain, regularly consuming more than two drinks a day can definitely harm it. Habitual consumption of more than 14 alcoholic drinks per week actually causes the brain to shrink, according to the results of a study conducted by researchers at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass. The scientists found that the more alcohol an individual drinks on a regular basis, the lower his or her total brain volume. For the study, the Wellesley researchers evaluated brain size and alcohol consumption patterns in more than 1,800 adults between the ages of 34 and 88 years. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were performed and used to measure brain volume, a relatively

Exercise Beneficial At Any Age By Rallie McAllister, M.D.
N
o matter what your age, it’s never too late to start exercising. In fact, physical activity is an excellent way to improve your overall health. In older adults, regular exercise reduces the risk of illness, injury and even death. The results of a recent Harvard study demonstrated that physical activity can increase life expectancy, even in folks who don’t begin exercising until the age of 75. There’s no doubt that the physical changes that typically occur with aging can make certain types of exercise challenging for older individuals. With age, joints tend to lose their mobility, ligaments become less flexible, and muscle strength and endurance steadily decline. Because we often have slower reaction times and aren’t able to balance ourselves as well as we could when we were younger, May - June 2010
we’re more prone to falls as we age. The most noticeable changes observed with aging involve the musculoskeletal system. Without regular physical activity, lean muscle mass gradually dwindles away, while the percentage of body fat steadily increases. Muscle strength is normally well maintained until about the fifth decade of life. It’s not uncommon to experience a 15 percent drop in muscle strength from the fifth to seventh decades, and up to a 30 percent drop each decade after the age of 70. Progressive bone loss and osteoporosis commonly accompany aging. Women typically maintain their bone density rather
58
easily until the age of 35, while men do so until about the age of 55; but by the age of 70, most men and women will have experienced significant losses in bone mass and strength. In the cardiovascular system, blood vessel walls can harden and the heart muscle can grow thicker, resulting in high blood pressure and heart disease. As our lungs become less elastic, they take up oxygen less efficiently. The good news is that regular exercise can help offset many of the changes that accompany aging. While physical activity won’t completely stop the hands of time, it can dramatically improve muscle strength, endurance, flexibility and overall health. Regular exercise helps lower blood pressure and improves the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar. It boosts levels of heart-protecting high-density lipoproteins, while it reduces levels of harmful lowdensity lipoproteins. Physical activity helps improve 67

Almonds Boost Health
I
f you’re searching for a snack that can help you lose weight and gain health, almonds are an excellent choice. For years, many dieters have shied away from nuts, largely because of their high fat and calorie content. The results of a study published in the International Journal of Obesity may help put almonds back on the menu for many dieters. The study demonstrated that the tasty morsels can be an important part of a successful weight-loss program. The study included 65 overweight and obese adults who were placed on one of two diets designed to promote weight loss. The caloric value and protein content of the two diets were equivalent, but only one included a 3-ounce serving of almonds daily. After 24 weeks, the two groups showed a striking difference in their weightloss patterns. The almondeating group lost 62 percent more weight and 56 percent more body fat than the nutfree group. The almond-eatMay - June 2010

ers also experienced significantly greater reductions in waist circumference and blood pressure. According to Wien, “The weight-loss benefits of eating almonds came as something of a surprise, since the study was originally designed to evaluate the cholesterol-lowering effects of almonds. As it turned out, the dieters who ate almonds lost more weight than would be expected if they were taking prescription diet pills.” Because of their unique texture and savory taste, almonds are very satisfying and provide a healthy source of “crunch” that many dieters miss, when they’re cutting back on carbohydrates. For folks trying to cut back on high-cholesterol animal foods, the crunchy nuts are a protein-rich alternative to eggs and meat. Ounce for ounce, almonds contain nearly as much
Weight Loss, Gains Rallie McAllister MD protein as lean meat. Unlike animal sources of protein, nuts are high in fiber. Wien’s research indicates that the fiber in almonds prevents some of the calories and fat from being absorbed by the human body. “The fiber binds with a portion of the fat, so that it doesn’t come into contact with the intestinal wall,” she explained. “It just gets flushed out of the body.” The almond fat that is absorbed by the body offers a number of health benefits. “Of the nine tree nuts that are commonly eaten, almonds are the richest in oleic acid,” Wien said. “This mono-unsaturated fat is the same type that is found in olive oil, and it’s known to play an important role in lowering cholesterol levels.” In an earlier study conducted at the University of Toronto, researchers found that when subjects ate just 1 ounce of almonds daily, their levels of low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol fell significantly. Lower levels of LDL cholesterol reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease.
Almonds contribute to heart health in another important way. The nuts are one of the best natural sources of vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant known to play a role in the prevention of heart disease. A 1-ounce serving of almonds provides nearly 40 percent of the recommended daily value of the vitamin. In addition to lowering the risk for heart disease, almonds appear to offer protection against some types of cancer. Like other varieties of nuts, almonds are rich in phytochemicals, biologically active compounds capable of blocking tumor formation. In light of all their proven benefits, almonds are a smart, convenient addition to any diet, whether the goal is to lose weight or gain health. These nuts stay fresh without refrigeration, so you can keep them in your car, your desk or your briefcase. Whether they’re eaten as an on-the-go snack or as an occasional meal replacement, almonds can be an important part of a healthy diet. ∆ 61

ocated in South Central Pennsylvania, less than a five hour drive from the GW Bridge, the AAA 4-Diamond Omni Bedford Springs Resort is an ideal place to unwind and rejuvenate.

Hi Class Living
The resort is adjacent to seven mineral springs, once revered for their curative powers by Native American tribes and early settlers. Some 200 years ago, Dr. John Anderson opened Bedford Springs, a fashionable hotel that soon became the place to summer and “take the waters.” Throughout the years, the resort played host to a score of luminaries including eleven US Presidents, from Thomas Jefferson to Ronald Reagan. President James Buchanan used the resort as his summer White House. The resort fell into disrepair for two decades, but following a four-year $120 million renovation, it has returned to its original grandeur and beyond. The main building is glorious and imposing, its brick façade framed by a colonnade of white pillars. The entrance is via the original port cochere, once the domain of horse drawn carriages. The welcoming lobby is furnished with antiques, period furniture, historical artifacts, and black and white photos of former guests. On the wall behind the front desk, a huge American flag with only 39 stars is a vivid reminder of the resort’s celebrated past. The 216 rooms are impeccably appointed with modern amenities and classic furniture. Many rooms have French doors opening to a long porch. The spacious baths offer marble top sinks, rain showers, and oval soaking tubs. The resort’s main attraction is Springs Eternal Spa, a 30,000 sq. ft. state-of-theart facility inspired by the fabled healing waters of the Bedfod Springs. Before every spa treatment guests enjoy the Bedford Bath Ritual. It begins with a cleansing shower, using a black walnut and ginger root body scrub, followed by a menthol-scented steam bath, and continued with a soaking in alternating hot and cold spring-fed, whirlpool tubs. The spa features an array of treatments from hydrotherapy to facials, all designed to pamper the body and soothe the soul.

Another highlight is the stunning Victorian-style indoor swimming pool, one of the oldest in America. Its spring-fed heated waters offer a blissful reprieve. For dining, the resort offers three venues. The main restaurant is the Crystal Room, elegantly appointed with sparkling chandeliers and decorated in black and white tones. Its dinner menu features popular entrees such as crab cakes, red wine braised lamb shank, and Angus Beef filet mignon. The Frontier Tavern offers light pub fare in a casual atmosphere. Its lively bar is popular with resort guests and area residents.
The 1796 Room, the resort’s fine dining restaurant, serves innovative American cuisine in an early frontier setting. Additional resort amenities include an exercise room and studio, 25 miles of hiking trails, an outdoor swimming pool, a trout stream for fishing, and an award winning golf course. The resort’s neighborhood, offers plenty of attractions including historic Bedford, museums, wineries, covered bridges, and civil war sites. A perfect year round destination. EXERCISE — From Pg. 59 symptoms of osteoarthritis. In the Fitness and Arthritis in Seniors Trial (FAST), exercise proved beneficial to more than 400 elderly adults with osteoarthritis. The exercising seniors not only suffered less pain; they showed significant improvements in mobility and strength. Incorporating strength exercises and balance training into a workout program can reduce the likelihood of falling. Weightbearing exercise helps improve bone density, lowering the risk of osteoporosis. Combined, these benefits significantly reduce the risk of sustaining debilitating bone fractures. Since no single fitness program works for everyone, you should choose one that you can perform comfortably. Most experts agree that the program should focus on improving aerobic fitness, muscle strength, flexibility and balance. Swimming, walking, dancing, stationary cycling and weight training are excellent choices. The key is to choose an activity
that is not only safe and effective, but also enjoyable. Before you start your exercise program, it’s a good idea to talk it over with your physician. If you have serious health issues, or if you’re planning to take up an especially strenuous activity, such as mountain biking or cross-country snow skiing, your doctor may want to perform a few tests to make sure your body is up to the challenge. If it’s been a while since you’ve exercised, it’s a good idea to start with lowintensity activities and gradually advance to a more vigorous workout. Begin with five- to 10-minute sessions, and progressively increase the intensity and duration of the activity until you’re able to exercise at least for 30 minutes on most days of the week. If you stick with it, your efforts will pay off. You’ll feel stronger, and have greater endurance and flexibility, and you may even live longer. ∆
Shoeing In — From Pg. 43 touch of trendy newness while providing extra stability at the same time. Clogs are the big news here. In patent python, you can slither your way into any fashionable foray. Look for peep-toe mules in distressed leathers and hand-painted florals.
