The Power

F

rom inception, we humans need nurture and love. Countless studies have proved their power from the cradle to the grave. In his book “Nurturing the Unborn Child,” Dr. Thomas Verny notes how prenatal and perinatal psychologists have proved that babies in the womb have “significant sensory capabilities” that respond to loving and adverse attention and conditions. By the fourth month after conception, high-tech tools -- such as the ultrasound -- have shown that babies have a well-developed sense of touch and taste. To understand the power of nurturing, Verny explained what happens when a loving environment is absent around the womb: “Though some stress during pregnancy is normal, our studies show that mothers under extreme and constant stress are more likely to have babies who are premature, lower than average in weight, hyperactive, irritable, and colicky. In extreme instances, these babies may be born with thumbs sucked November - December 2014

raw or even with ulcers.” In 2010, a group of studies led by Notre Dame psychology professor Darcia Narvaez confirmed what most expected and earlier research suggested: “Children who get more positive touch and affection during infancy turn out to be kinder, more intelligent and to care more about others,” in the words of Maia Szalavitz, a neuroscience journalist who co-authored with leading child psychiatrist Dr. Bruce Perry “Born for Love: Why Empathy Is Essential — and Endangered.” In 2012, the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published a study by researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine who utilized magnetic resonance imaging to reveal that the hippocampus region of a preschooler’s brain — responsible for memory forming, organizing and storing, as well as stress and emotional management — actually enlarged under the care of a nurturing parent. Of course, a plethora of research and life experiences have clearly demonstrated to most of us just how critical the power of love is through childhood and adolescence and into adulthood. Lisa Collier Cool, a best-selling author and the winner of 19 journalism awards, reported for Yahoo Health on seven clinically based ways in which love improves our all-around health and mental stability: • Love defuses stress and improves our immune system. • Love heals personal and relational wounds. • Love betters brain health by lowering cognitive impairment. • Loving touches enhance personal and relational security and safety. • Loving hugs increase the hormone oxytocin, which is responsible for social bonding, increase cardiovascular system strength and even lower blood pressure. • Loving commitment improves the health of married couples in comparison with those who are separated, divorced or widowed. • Love increases personal happiness. November - December 2014

And what about the voracious romantic hunger between lovers that we celebrate on Valentine’s Day? Believe it or not — and this one is for all flower lovers — Dr. Jeannette HavilandJones, director of the Human Emotions Lab at Rutgers University, led a study in which her team discovered that those who send flowers, in comparison with other gifts, as an expression of their love and adoration are regarded as “successful, caring and emotionally intelligent people.” (So much for diamonds being girl’s best friend.) And in an article titled “Mind blowing power of love,” The Sydney Morning Herald reported, “A five-year study monitoring brain activity during therapy sessions has shown that two people can become physiologically aligned — parts of their nervous systems beating in harmony — despite having no physical contact with each (other).” Dr. Trisha Stratford, the neuropsychotherapist who spearheaded the research at the University of Technology, Sydney, said there was a sixth sense that occurred when people fell in love. She explained: “It was very exciting. When we’re in this moment of oneness or an altered state, the most exciting thing is that a part of the brain called the parietal lobe is fired into action. When this happens we can read each other’s brains and bodies at a deeper level — a sixth sense.” In summary, Szalavitz and Perry wrote: “While we are born for love, we need to receive it in certain, specific ways in early life to benefit most from its mercy. We need to practice love as we grow through different social experiences to best be able to give it back in abundance. The brain becomes what it does most frequently. It is shaped every day by what we do — and what we don’t do. If we don’t practice empathy, we can’t become more empathetic. If we don’t interact with people, we can’t improve our connections to them. If we don’t ease each other’s stress through caring contact, we will all be increasingly distressed.” So get out there this holiday season and practice loving those you love (and find it hard to love). ∆

an you imagine your life as you want it to be? Are you stalled in getting there? You have it within you to succeed. Here are some tips to make it happen: Wake up with an attitude of appreciation. Why? Because you woke up! If asked “How are you today?” your answer should be “fantastic, excellent or great.” G.R.E.A.T. stands for Getting Really Excited About Today. You are excited because you woke up — you can see, hear, walk, talk… Today could be your last day. Why not make it the greatest day of your life? Self-motivation should begin the moment you wake up What can you do for you? After all, you are the most important person in the world. If you can’t do something special for yourself, you certainly won’t be able to do anything helpful or productive for anyone else. Do something for you first. Self-motivation is just beginning Once you have done something special for yourself, recognize and reward yourself with juice, coffee or breakfast. It’s a small treat, but any behavior that is recognized and rewarded gets repeated. Self-motivation needs recognition. Only you can provide it. Understand that no one provides selfmotivation — only you can motivate yourself Self-motivation can come from external influences that are never lasting or, better yet, self-motivation can be internal and

17

Hi Class Living

ever lasting. Live your life from the inside out not the outside in and embrace undeviating self-motivation. Make a decision: choose self-motivation and live the life of your dreams Do you really want to live somebody else’s dream, a combination of your dream and theirs, or leave life to chance and circumstance? It doesn’t matter what you decide. You are the decision maker and by using self-motivation you will make that decision work. Go ahead, make a decision now. Enhance your self-motivation. Self-motivation is taking control of your life You can’t control the weather, the traffic or what other people say. If you cannot control it, let it be. But there are things in life you can control. Learning to control your thoughts, your ego, your reactions and, most importantly, your attitude is all part of self-motivation. Knowing you have gained control of your outlook and approach to daily life will boost your selfmotivation. Get to know yourself

Question your self-motivation. What are your values? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Is self-motivation realized by focusing on your strengths? What motivates you? What de-motivates you? Self-motivation questions your fears and limitations? How can you overcome them? What are your ineffective habits? What effective habits can replace them? Dig deep and answer these questions honestly as they relate to self-motivation. Set aside some quiet time just for yourself every day Set a time to reflect on self-motivation. I once took a day off work and gave myself 24 hours to write down everything I wanted to be, to do and to have. I decided that nothing was impossible and there were no barriers. I imagined how my life would be affected if everything I wrote November - December 2014

on that paper came true. And if I didn’t write it all down in 24 hours, nothing in my life would change — I would be closing the door on self-motivation. Thirty years later I have accomplished most of those same dreams and goals. I exercise selfmotivation every day. Self-motivation is knowing where you want to go and what you want to achieve You are unlikely to enjoy success without self-motivation. Success is the progressive realization of a goal and a dream. However, it is only a dream unless it is in print. Crystallization of a dream begins with writing it down on paper. Write everything from the inside out; imagine nothing is impossible. Self-motivation has no barriers, no limitations and no fears. Group, categorize and prioritize all of your dreams and learn the secret to enhanced self-motivation. Review your list of dreams Make it a daily habit. Dreams are the foundation to self-motivation and must be written, planned, visualized and put into action. Prioritize your dreams and determine the price you are willing to pay to make your dreams a reality. The price could be effort, time, education, etc. If this form of self-motivation does not appeal to you, revisit your priorities. Part of self-motivation is knowing what you want to do and creating an action plan for success Keep each action point simple so it can be accomplished. Large tasks usually get shelved so minimize them. When your action plan is ready to be carried out, sign your name to it. Your signature should be the strongest commitment to yourself. Take action Self-motivation is the actual doing. Thinking leads to procrastination. So stop thinking — just do it! The worst outcome is failure. You have to fail often to 54

Traveling Apps To Keep You On Track Ted Florence

W

hether you’re a globe-trotter or a first-time traveler, leaving your home-base can be fraught with issues beyond your control, but there are ways to prepare for them.

But to paraphrase J.R.R. Tolkien, ‘not all those who wander are lost.’ So how do the best of travelers steer clear of mishaps? Stay close to your smartphone… because when it doubt, there’s an app for that! Some handy travel apps can provide a hurried traveler the shortest route to an impromptu client meeting; a business-savvy person a few tips to packing correctly and not forgetting anything; and a globe-trotter a way to quickly find the best dishes while traveling to international clients:

Traveling by the (TSA) book There used to be a time in the distant past when some may have considered plane travel a ‘breeze ’but now making a joking comment may be a costly delay, or even worse! Knowing the rules before you get to the security lines can make a trip hassle-free and an app like the My TSA app can provide airline passengers with 24/7 access to the most frequently requested airport security information. Check real-time information from other passengers posting their checkpoint wait time at your airport, and never be delayed for a long-awaited trip again. (iOS/ Android; free) Getting the best seat On the plane Airplanes may not be the most comfortable place to spend a few hours of travel, but it always feels better when you know you have some control over where you sit. The SeatGuru app is powered by TripAdvisor and gives travelers a wide selection of airlines and online travel agents to find the right flight and the lowest fares to fit any budget. The free app also has color-coded seat maps and shows aircraft amenities for most of the

largest domestic and international airlines. The best part? Just like its creator, TripAdvisor, SeatGuru offers passengers the ability to see reviews and real images taken by travelers before them… because you don’t want to be stuck in a middle seat that doesn’t recline on your next nine hour flight! (iOS/Android; free) Have map will travel Sometimes, the best part of traveling is discovering new places on your own, and what better way to roam than with a map app that doesn’t keep you tethered to a cell tower to transmit map images. The PDF Maps app from Avenza works anywhere that cell service doesn’t so it’s useful in mountain ranges, at sea and just about any place around world, without the high cost of data roaming fees. Features include the ability to measure distances and place placemarks on your map with images and descriptions of the places you’ve visited. This allows travelers to email their placemarks to any number of friends if needed and to include placemarks from others. The app and a majority of the maps in the Avenza store are free, but others can cost as little as ninety-nine cents depending on the publisher. Maps from publishers like

National Geographic, The US Geological Survey and The US Forest Service are among the 100,000-plus maps available in this app. (iOS/Android; free) Staying ‘current’ No matter where you go in the world, people always understand the language of money so it’s best to keep a quick reference on hand to keep current with the going rates. Convert every world currency on-the-go with the universally optimized XECurrency App which features live currency rates and charts. Eating like a local One of the best parts of traveling is trying the local food-fare, but should you find yourself with a grumbling tummy in the middle of a food mecca with no real direction of where to go, check out the Foodspotting app. The social-networking-type app finds restaurants in your area using your phone’s GPS by filtering through the most reviewed, most popular, price, local and other criteria. Estate Planning Picking

C

hoosing the right person or people to handle the management of your assets after you die merits a lot of thought.

While it’s pretty common to appoint a family member or friend, that’s not your only choice. A lot depends on your personal situation — both the complexity of your estate as well as family dynamics. Appointing a family member can be seen as a symbol of love and faith. However, in the case of multiple siblings, it could be interpreted as an expression of trust in one child over another. But while there’s an emotional November - December 2014

component to this choice, you need to try to keep sentiment in check. It’s really about who will do the best job. Of course, you want someone you trust implicitly to be fair to all your beneficiaries. However, you also need someone with the expertise and personality to handle a myriad of financial details over time. Being an executor (of your will) or trustee (of your trust) is a big responsibility that can go on for years. One or another of your children may well be equipped for the job. But before you make a choice, step back and give some thought to the following questions.

What type of management will your estate require? The bigger your estate, the bigger the job. An executor or trustee’s responsibilities can involve not only the settling of accounts and distribution of assets, but also the ongoing management of those assets for current as well as future beneficiaries. There are tax and legal documents to file, records to keep, and ongoing financial decisions to make. If your assets are extensive and your estate is complicated, this person may need the help of outside advisors to carry out your wishes. Who is most suited professionally? Emotionally? Practically? On top of being financially savvy, an executor or trustee must be responsible, practical, organized and able to handle potential pressure from beneficiaries 34

he new “ath-leisure” trend where performance wear meets the everyday wardrobe has exploded lately. Activewear is booming, because consumers are wearing it not only to the gym, in the gym and from the gym, but they are working out, going out and even hanging out in activewear. And who wouldn’t love this new fashion trend? “Consumers are drawn to its comfort and versatility and the fact that it still makes a fashion statement. Activewear, by nature, also evokes a sense of athleticism and well being, which only adds to its appeal,” says Marshal Cohen, NPD’s chief industry analyst. Fashion designers have picked up on the fact that many of us like to stretch our weekend workout wardrobe into Monday mornings at the office and Tuesday nights out for dinner. After establishing a name in surfwear, designer Cynthia Rowley is taking workout wear to a whole new level in her new resort collection, calling it “functional fitness gear.” Rowley sees her fans wearing these sporty 46

ature is calling. Time to pull on the cowboy boots, the frayed jeans and denim vests, and head for the hills. Think country cool with a contemporary twist. Here’s a few ways to get the laid-back vibe: Reboot

This fall, the boots are big, big, big fashion statements. So there are plenty of ways to step out for the weekend. Knee-high or ankle-high, just make sure you can walk or hike in comfort, and that usually means a flat heel or chunkier lug sole heel. Get your denim on

If there was ever a weekend uniform, denim is it. Pack up lots of denim vests, denim jackets, jeans and yes, even skirts if you plan to go out for a date night. Now that designers are touting the head-to-toe jeanswear look, it’s an easy way to piece together a get-away wardrobe that can be mixed and matched with your other favorites like leggings. Try adding a pop of color to your November - December 2014

bluesy basics to keep things interesting.

instant panache. A serape-style poncho or cape is another weekend winner.

Go mad for plaid

A quintessential fall favorite, plaid is another versatile classic that pairs well with denim. Look for lumberjack plaids this season in a variety of colorful styles from vests to shirts and dresses. Cinch it all in with a wide, rustic belt and you’re set to go. Plaid wool scarves are another great fall accessory and a great accent to denim.

Dig the big bag I know it’s a lot to carry... and you can always stash a smaller one inside a larger tote for those short day trips to the farm stands. But a larger satchel/cross body/ backpack in a lightweight cotton or canvas fabric can be a lifesaver when it comes to schlepping all your electronics and doing a little shopping -- a great weekend pastime.

Add a great sweater The knits are it this year. Chunky cable knit fisherman’s sweaters in creamy ivory are always a good “go-with-everything” piece. Ditto for ski-lodge-inspired sweaters. Longer, knee-length patchwork jackets and wrap blanket styles in Navajo patterns are another way to give your denim gear

Finish with a fedora If you can’t quite pull off the hat look for work, then how about trying one for the weekend? If you only buy one new thing this fall, try a hat with personality, whether it’s a cute knit beanie or a funky fun fedora. Now you’re set for a jaunt to the country! Enjoy! ∆

ESTATE PLANNING — From Pg. 29 with different needs and requests as well. Which of your children best combines these traits? For instance, while your eldest son may have the most authority in the family, would he need more help with financial management? And while your daughter may have the financial knowhow, does she have the temperament to deal impartially with her siblings? On a purely practical level, which of your children actually has the time to devote to ongoing management of your estate? What’s the potential for family misunderstanding? When one person in a family is given authority or power over others, there’s always the potential for problems. Your kids may all get along now, but when money is involved or issues of control arise, will that change? To help avoid future problems, speak directly with your family about what the job will entail and why you’re considering November - December 2014

appointing one or another of them. They may have no idea of the responsibilities. In fact, once they do know, you may find that the child you think is most suited may not want the job at all. Would a corporate trustee be a smart choice? Another option is to appoint a corporate trustee, such as a bank or trust company, to manage your trust. On the plus side, a corporate trustee can potentially provide all the investment and legal expertise under one roof. A corporate trustee can also be impartial in assessing requests and distributing assets. On the negative side, your heirs would be working with an impersonal institution and have to deal with the possibility that the staff or even the ownership of the company could change over time. Another negative is that fees for a corporate trustee are often higher than for an individual trustee.

34

A few more considerations Appointing two or more people can

invite trouble. When there are only two beneficiaries, for instance a brother and sister who get along well, it could work fine. But when there are multiple beneficiaries, it may be best to have one person or entity making the decisions and handling the details. Compensation can be another trouble spot. Being a trustee, in particular, is a timeconsuming job that can go on for years. While a fee is certainly warranted, a family trustee might feel awkward taking a fee or other beneficiaries might question if it’s being earned. To avoid problems, it would be wise to specifically designate in your trust how trustee fees will be determined. Your estate-planning attorney should be able to provide some guidance. Finally, once you make a decision, talk to all of your kids again. I encourage you to be open about your estate plan, what they can expect and why you’ve chosen one or more of them to be responsible for your estate. Speaking from personal experience, I also recommend stipulating that you want all of the beneficiaries to meet with your attorney as a group when the time comes. That simple step can provide an important buffer against potential hard feelings. ∆

Here are the must-haves to see you through the winter in style: The puffer vest or parka In bright colors and prints, these old favorites are making news not only on the ski slopes but on the streets. Some down jackets even fold up in their own carrying pouch — perfect for those warmer days ahead. Yes, they will come! Giant capes Easy to just throw over your shoulders and dash out the door. The best ones are popping up in artsy graphic prints. Beanie hats Having a bad hair day? Just pull on a knitted beanie hat. And if you really need protection from the single digits, go for the trapper hat to really block the cold. scarves Definitely a winter must-have. There are chunky, knitted ones for casual days and cashmere pashminas for every occasion. Sequined scarves and shawls are showing up at glamorous parties. Leggings Jeans may be on your must-have list for winter, but for many, stretchy leggings and jeggings are much more comfortable, especially in the winter when it’s all about layering. Setting A Dramatic Thanksgiving Decor Mary Carol Garrity

f you are entertaining this Thanksgiving, make the setting for your feast as special as the people who will ring your table.

Here are some steps I follow when creating a dramatic and memorable Thanksgiving table. Aim to Awe

Thanksgiving is the perfect opportunity to spoil the people we love most by taking extra time to set a table that is so lavish and lovely it lets guests know how very important they are to you. The time you invest in creating a dramatic tablescape pays off when you see the surprised and delighted faces of guests as they take in your dining room. terpieces that are intricate and complex, and I’ve fashioned some that are powerful in their subtle simplicity. Consider using matching garden urns to anchor your centerpiece, or even tall, beefy vases or cake plates or hurricanes anything that gives you some nice height and allows you to embellish with seasonal decor. Incorporate moss, straw and fall foliage. If you want to go bigger and wilder, use longer tendrils of fall foliage and fallen sticks in your centerpiece. Lushly layered place settings that weave together different colors, textures and heights are among my very favorites. Maybe start with simple orange table runners, which provide a pop of bright fall color, to break up the wood of a table top and serve as placemats. Look in your china cabinet and see what dishes you could mix up to give your table a blend of patterns and colors. You’ll be surprised by the diverse pieces you can weave together LET’S GET PHYSICAL — From Pg. 30 separates for surfing, funning or SoulCycling, and then pairing them with ready-towear pieces for other occasions. She also designed one-pound wrist weights that resemble chunky leather bracelets. Retailers are also getting physical with the new athletic-inspired apparel that can be dressed up to wear for a variety of occasions. Sweatpants will never be the same. Check out the twill “unsweatpant” sweatpants at J.Crew. You may never wear khakis again. Other companies such as Under Armour and Sports Authority are creating new “ath-leisure” collections as fast as they can. Perhaps go with a menu card, a name card so everyone knows where to sit and a conversation prompt: “I am thankful for....” There is something special about seeing your name at your place setting. It makes you feel like a treasured addition to the party. Also add fall-themed dishes and linens. Don’t Forget the Backdrop While the dining table is the undisputed star, don’t forget to add some decorative touches to the rest of your dining room. If your table is loaded with drama, you won’t need much. One of the spots to dress up is your buffet. tion into a professional workplace. Gap’s Athleta brand offers “metro” leggings layered under sweater dresses that easily transition from “workout to weekend to whenever,” claims the company’s advertising slogan. And the next time you’re in Urban Outfitters, check out the “Without Walls” display of sporty clothes with an edgy vibe. “Retailers and manufacturers across the board know that activewear is active,” says Cohen of NPD, “and they will want a piece of the action. Because of this competition, it’s not enough for them to simply jump on the activewear bandwagon. To truly capitalize on this ongoing trend, they need to unveil products that are colorful and unique, and fuel the activewear demand not with repetition, but with innovation and creativity.” “All the lines are blurred,” says Rowley. But wearing comfort clothes to work? Now, that’s a fashion trend we can all clearly see ahead. ∆

verybody is different. You are uniquely you. Your body is an expression of your biochemistry, your genetics, your beliefs. What works for someone else may or may not work for you.

That’s why it doesn’t make sense for you to ask around to see how much vitamin C, D, E, or calcium or iron your friends are taking. Their levels, their imbalances and their needs are not yours. Your unique biochemistry determines the most authentic answer. Good nutrition is not a cookie-cutter business. To know what your body is lacking, you need to get the necessary blood tests and urine analyses done. Then you can see where you stand on all sorts of important measures: your levels of phosphorus, uric acid, magnesium; your lipid profile (including cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL); your homocysteine level; your B12, iron and more. Once you know your numbers, you’ll be able to sit down with a well-trained nutritionist, and together, discover what’s too high, what’s too low, and what you can do about it. Using food first, and supplements second, you can map out a smart strategy that’s tailor-made for you. No money wasted on vitamins, minerals and supplements you don’t personally need. The hard part — and this is a true and unnecessary failing of our health care system — is finding that nutritionist. And why doesn’t insurance pay for it? That’s crazy. high-stress life or strung-out personality can lead to a number of repercussions in life, from high blood pressure to failed relationships. Studies have shown that negative moods and traits can contribute to damaged arteries and damage the heart itself. But a study conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health showed that being optimistic and upbeat is not only good for you mentally but may also help protect you against heart disease. In her review of 200 studies examining the links between psychological wellbeing and physical health, Dr. Julia Boehm said that people who were most optimistic had half the risk of a first heart attack than those who were least optimistic. Those results were true regardless of a person’s age, socio-economic status, body weight or smoking status. Boehm found that people with a better sense of well-being tend to have healthier blood pressure, cholesterol and weight, and are more likely to exercise, eat healthier, get enough sleep and avoid smoking. This study confirms what we already know, that psychological well-being is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, just like staying active and eating healthily. Taking a moment to just relax and enjoy a sunny day might be good heart health. I’m firmly convinced that my good health, as well as my success in life, has resulted primarily from my positive mentality, perseverance and faith in God. Several decades ago, I created the following positive “principles for life,” and

I encourage you to do the same for your own life: • I will develop myself to the maximum of my potential in all ways. • I will forget the mistakes of the past and press on to greater achievements. • I always will be in a positive frame of mind and convey this feeling to every person whom I meet. • I will continually work at developing love, happiness and loyalty in my family and acknowledge that no other success can compensate for failure in the home. • I will look for the good in all people and make them feel worthwhile. • If I have nothing good to say about a person, I will say nothing. • I will give so much time to the improvement of myself that I will have no time to criticize others. • I always will be as enthusiastic about the success of others as I am about my own. • I will maintain an attitude of openmindedness toward another person’s viewpoint while still holding fast to that which I know to be true and honest. • I will maintain respect for those in authority and demonstrate this respect at all times. • I will always remain loyal to God, my country, my family and my friends. • I will remain highly goal-oriented throughout my life because that positive attitude helps me and my family. ∆

or chat with fellow passengers. Ship amenities also include complimentary drinks throughout the lounges, an espresso and cappuccino machine, use of bicycles, and free Wi-Fi. The cruise‘s main attraction, however, is an exciting selection of shore excursions. There are half day or full day trips, some only short walks from the ship, others two to three hours away. Most trips are complimentary, except several in depth art tours in Venice and a wine country tour. Guests are divided in groups and are driven by comfortable coaches with English speaking local guides. There is even a group for slower walking guests. Here are some of the itinerary highlights: Venice We start our tour with a visit to the Doge’s Palace, the seat of power of the powerful Venetian Republic. We walk through gilded chambers, along gold leafed corridors, marble fireplaces, and paintings by Tiepolo, Titian, Tintoretto, and others. The tour concludes with a walk across the Bridge of Sighs and through the ancient prison. At night we are treated to an exclusive experience in St. Marks Basilica, the most famous church in Venice. We sit in the darkness, and as the interior is gradually illuminated we are awed by the colorful mosaic art, the golden cupolas, and the basilica’s majestic altar. An art historian presents the fascinating thousand year history of the church and we view the gilded silver panels behind the altar. PADUA

Padua is a glorious medieval city, once home to Galileo, Copernicus, and Dante. We stroll through the city’s main public square, a huge plaza dotted with water fountains and statues of local notables. Venice’s Grand Canal. Main square in Padua. Portico in Bologna. Food shop in Bologna.

Refreshing spritz.

We visit the Byzantine style Basilica of St. Anthony, considered as one of the top eight Catholic shrines. We view St. Anthony’s tomb and relics and admire the High Altar by Donatello. The tour continues to the old University of Padua, famous for its illustrious alumni and for its medical and scientific discoveries. Finally, we stop at historic Pedrocchi Café and taste their signature coffee — a strong espresso topped with a refreshing mint foam.

Handmade pasta in Bologna.

BOLOGNA Bologna is home to the oldest public university in the world, dating back to 1088. We visit the 16th-century inner courtyard and view coats of arms of students from all over the world. The top floor houses the anatomy theater where medical students studied the human body. We continue to Piazza Maggiore, a sprawling square surrounded by the imposing Church of St. Petronio and the City Hall. We walk along the city’s famous decorative porticos (covered sidewalks), some dating back to the middle ages. The town of Bologna is known for its wonderful food including mortadella,

Parma ham, parmigiano cheese, balsamic vinegar, pasta, and the Bolognese sauce. The stores are laden with giant hams, oversized bologna salami, cheese wheels, fresh vegetables, and fish. Our tour includes a pasta making demonstration in a local restaurant, where we observe how pasta is handmade from scratch, and is rolled into tagliatelle, tortellini, and other shapes. The demonstration concludes with a lunch of charcuterie, freshly made pasta, and local wine. RAVENnA Ravenna, once the capital of the Roman Empire and a major Byzantine city, is home to several UNESCO heritage sights. We visit the Basilica of St Vitale, an octagonal shaped church, in service since the sixth century. The domed ceiling and walls are covered with magnificent mosaic art depicting biblical scenes. We also stop at the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, next to the church, and marvel at the blue mosaics representing the afterlife. The tour ends with a stroll along the city’s winding streets, where we browse eclectic

boutiques and purchase local souvenirs. VERONA Verona was an important Roman city long before Shakespeare made it the world’s famous city of love. We visit the charming medieval area, walk along ancient streets and squares, and learn about Verona’s glorious past. We stop by Romeo’s house and continue to Juliet’s courtyard and view her legendary balcony. The tour continues with a walk along the marble paved streets, passing by designer boutiques, fine stores, and restaurants. We complete the tour at the city’s best known landmark, the Arena of Verona, home to its famous summer opera festival. With a capacity of up to 25,000 seats, it is the second largest Roman arena after the Colosseum in Rome. The shore excursions are fascinating, but if guests don’t wish to join, they can always remain on board, enjoy a luxurious massage, or relax on the sun deck with a frothy cappuccino or a refreshing spritz, the local northern Italian cocktail. Before or after dinner, relax at the James Bond bar and enjoy a Spritz, a refreshing local specialty cocktail made with Prosecco and Aperol. The Grand Hotel is popular year round. Its high season is during Christmas and New Year when families come to enjoy the holidays and escape the frigid weather at home. The hotel is also in high demand in February, during the Venice carnival, as guests come to enjoy the masquerades in the city and to be part of the extravagant masked ball at the hotel. T

he Bauer Palladio Hotel & Spa is a luxury property on Giudecca Island across the lagoon from St. Mark’s Square — but a world away. Located amidst flowering gardens and verdant trees, the Palladio, originally a sixteenth century convent, was lovingly restored and transformed into a modern hotel with all amenities. The main building has 37 rooms and 13 suites with warm decor and soft color palette. Rooms have lagoon or garden views, some featuring small balconies. A separate building offers additional accommodations overlooking the white hydrangea gardens. Breakfast is served al fresco in the beautiful courtyard. It features Italian style fare such as cold cuts, cheeses, hard boiled eggs, pastries, fresh fruit, cereals, yogurts and frothy cappuccinos. For dinner, the restaurant L’Ulivo offers Italian and Mediterranean fare. Try the foil baked sea bass with vegetables or the fillet of beef with mushrooms and black truffles. The hotel spa is a popular attraction. One of their signature treatments is the couples “Dreamers Ritual,” a unique experience that stimulates energy flow from sky (head) to earth (feet). The ritual, performed in a special suite, begins with a scalp massage, followed by face cleansing and exfoliation, and concluding with a bath and a soothing foot massage. The Palladio is ideal for guests who prefer a private, off the beaten path hotel, but can reach Venice’s center in minutes via the complimentary shuttle boat service.
