Call it creeping consumerism, entitlement, or plain old peer pressure. We see our hectic and expensive lifestyles as normal — and it’s time we realized that keeping up with the proverbial Joneses is actually extravagant and irresponsible. “Fulfilling lives are lives based on your core

values, not the ones society dictates,” says Donna Skeels Cygan, author of The Joy of Financial Security: The art and science of becoming happier, managing your money wisely, and creating a secure financial future. “It’s amazing how many of us feel we have to live in the right neighborhood or drive a new car just because our peers do.” “Often, happiness means making a deliberate choice to stop keeping up with the Joneses,” she adds. “You have to pay attention and get mindful about where your money goes. It’s worth the effort. The consequences of living beyond our means outweigh the short-term satisfaction we feel when we pull out a credit card to make another upgrade. Lavish spending just does not make us happy at all (at least not for long). Sane, smart money management does.” Cygan points to Denmark, which, according to data collected by the Gallup Organization, was ranked as the happiest country in the world in recent years. The results are summarized in the World Happiness Report 2013, and the U.S. came in at 17. While many factors contribute to Denmark’s ranking, Danes’ attitude toward money is certainly one of them. “In Denmark, modesty is a virtue, and showing off is looked down upon,” says Cygan. “Overall, Danes don’t feel the need to pursue bigger homes, nicer cars, and more fashionable clothes—and consequently, they carry less unnecessary debt. Danes also place a high priority on living a socially balanced life, setting aside time to spend with their families and friends.” Cygan highlights nine financial and psychological benefits of cutting ties with the Joneses: You’ll set an example for your children For many families, choosing to stop emulating the Joneses will mean making significant, tangible changes in everyday life: dining out less or setting a limit for back-to-school clothes spending. It provides you the opportunity to sit down with your children and have an important Holiday 2015

financial conversation. You’ll be able to set up an emergency fund Emergency funds may not seem like a top priority…until you need one. “If you don’t already have enough saved to cover expenses for six months, make this your top priority,” Cygan advises. You’ll be in a position to fund your future You should be aggressively saving: for the traveling you want to do, to help fund your kids’ college educations, and especially for your own retirement. “After building up your emergency fund, I recommend making your savings automatic, whether you’re funneling money toward an employer-provided 401(k), a Roth IRA, a taxable investment account, or something else,” she adds. “Even if you’re able to set aside only $25 or $50 per month initially, it’s a step in the right direction. You’ll soon see improvement, and knowing you’re taking control of your money feels great. On my website, www.joyoffinancialsecurity.com, I offer resources and tools to help you calculate and increase the percentage of your income you are saving.” You can work less and live more Here’s the great irony of keeping up with the Joneses: You’re spending, spending, spending on a big house, a new car, and all the latest electronics because these things are the status quo, and you feel that you deserve them. Then you have to work even harder to sustain the lifestyle that you’re not really enjoying at all because you’re stressed and exhausted. It’s a vicious cycle that many people never break, because they never realize that the source of their unhappiness is, in fact, all of the “stuff” they thought would bring them joy. “You might find you can slow your soul-crushing pace, or that you can cut back on the overtime,” Cygan points out. “Even a few extra hours each week 40

Marriage And Health T

here is some fascinating evidence regarding the link between marriage and health. But whether marriage is good or bad for your health depends largely on whether you have a good relationship or a bad one.

Harvard Men’s Health Watch had a fabulous edition on the relation between health and marriage, but with a few twists and turns. First, HMHW noted how many studies conducted over the past 150 years revealed that marriage is good for one’s health. HMHW cited a major survey of 127,545 American adults that showed that married men are healthier and even

live longer than men who have never been married, are divorced or are widowers. But then HMHW asked a critical question: Is marriage itself responsible for better health and a longer life? HMHW’s answer: Yes and no. Marriage at least deserves part of the credit: “People living with unmarried partners tend to fare better than those living alone, but men living with their wives have the best health of all.” And when I say that marriage increases your health, the benefits are across the board — from increasing mental health to reducing America’s leading killers, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Here are a few key findings by HMHW: • ”Mental health is the most prominent; married men have a lower risk of depression and a higher likelihood of satisfaction with life in retirement than their unmarried peers. Being married has also been linked to better cognitive function, a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease, improved blood sugar levels, and better outcomes for hospitalized patients. In contrast, widowhood boosts the likelihood of sexually transmitted diseases in men, but not women.” • Japanese scientists reported that nevermarried men were three times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than married men... Even after taking major cardiovascular risk factors such as age, body fat, smoking, blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol into account, married men had a 46 percent lower rate of death than unmarried men.” • A 2002 study found that the more educated a man’s wife, the lower his risk for coronary artery disease and risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol, smoking, and lack of exercise. And a 2009 study reported that men married to more educated women also enjoyed a lower death rate than men married to less educated women.” Holiday 2015

• Though “there is little evidence that marriage reduces the overall risk of getting cancer... a study of 27,779 cancer cases found that unmarried individuals were more likely to have advanced disease at the time of diagnosis than married persons. They were also less likely to receive treatment than married patients, and marriage was linked to improved survival.” HMHW added that the “University of Miami investigated 143,063 men with prostate cancer. Over a 17-year period, married men survived far longer than separated and widowed patients; men who had never married had an intermediate survival rate.” Similar evidence was found for married patients with bladder cancer, another predominantly male disease. That’s the good news about a good marriage. The bad news is that if you’re in a bad marriage, your health may not fare so well. HMHW noted, for example, that a British study of 9,011 civil servants linked a 34 percent increase in the risk of heart attacks and angina to stress in relationships. Moreover, an Israeli study of 10,059 men linked stressful family relationships with a 34 percent risk increase of dying from stroke. And the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial, which studied 10,904 married American men, found that men who divorced were 37 percent likelier to die during the nine-year study than men who remained married. Interestingly, divorce also instigated a higher rate of suicide by men, but not women. And for men whose wives died from any cause, there was an increase in sickness, disability and mortality rates among the widowed husbands within a period of a few years after their spouses passed. It’s been noted how the longer a couple is together the greater the similarities are between both people. In 2009, Italian scientists studying the patterns of 100,000 44

Money Tips Merging H

M

oving in together is a big emotional and financial step which can impact a relationship positively or negatively, depending on how open each partner is about money. There’s no single recommended way to handle your finances. The details will vary for each couple. The most important thing is that you agree upfront on how to handle them. So before you take your togetherness to the next level, I’d make a date to talk through how financially close you want to be. Start With the Living Arrangements If you’ll be moving in to your partner’s house, the first question is how you’ll contribute to the monthly payment. Will you initially pay the equivalent of rent? If so, how will you determine what’s fair?

Holiday 2015

22

For Couples ouseholds Carrie Schwab-Pomerantz

Hi Class Living

The issue here is that by paying rent, you’re contributing to the mortgage without having any ownership in the property.

If you were to continue to live together long term, at what point would you want a share of ownership? And what percentage of ownership? It’s easy as time goes on to say “our house,” but for it to legally belong to both of you, the title needs to be in both of your names. Otherwise, you could quite literally be left out in the cold should the relationship end. On your side, what will you do with the house you own? Will you rent it? Sell it? If you sell, you could possibly invest some of the proceeds in your partner’s house, therefore increasing your share of ownership in her home. There again, the title would have to be legally changed. (Note: If you decide to sell your house, think about completing the sale within the next three years. Otherwise, you would potentially forfeit your homeowner capital gains tax exclusion. Check with your tax adviser for details.) There’s a lot to think about. A home is often an individual’s greatest asset, so it’s important for the two of you to agree on these things sooner rather than later. Discuss Big-Ticket Items Living together often means investing in major purchases for your home from time to time — appliances, entertainment systems, furniture. Talk about how you’ll handle these potential costs. Will you share them equally? Each pay for different items? Again, there’s no right or wrong way to go about it. But it will make it a lot easier when the time comes if you have an idea in advance of how you’ll handle these expenses. Likewise with such things as entertainment and vacations. There’s no harm in treating each other, but make sure you have a mutual understanding about the things you want to do. Agree on a savings and cost-sharing plan so that neither of you always feels obligated to cover for the other. Holiday 2015

Drill Down to the Day-to-Day Stuff

Sharing a home also means sharing the ongoing costs, such as utilities, cable, Internet, cleaning services, groceries — all the daily expenses that can add up quickly. Figure out how you’ll divide these costs. One approach is to come up with a monthly household budget and then each contribute an equal amount. If one of you earns more than the other, that person could offer to cover a greater percentage of the bills. Once again, the main point is to be fair. To make things easier for both of you, consider opening a joint account for everyday living expenses. That way, even if one of you is primarily responsible for handling the bills, each of you has access to the account. A joint account would also allow you to comfortably put certain recurring bills on auto-pay. Keep an Eye on the Future In the early days of living together, it’s probably wisest to keep the majority of your finances separate. As your relationship continues or should you marry, you can decide how much you want to share. Some couples — especially those who join their lives when they’re already financially established — set up a “yours, mine and ours” system, allowing them to keep their accumulated assets separate while combining their incomes and sharing expenses. Down the road, I would also suggest that you meet with a financial adviser. An objective and knowledgeable third party can help you understand your options and create a framework that is fair to both of you. I’m a firm believer in financial independence for everyone at every stage of life. But that doesn’t mean you can’t work together to achieve your dreams. At this point, take it a step at a time. Just be sure to discuss each step in advance so you know it’s fair to both of you -- and that you’re both headed in the same direction. ∆

Play Time Matters Marilynn Preston

lay isn’t just fun and games, but rather essential to the conscious life, a spark to joy and creativity, a way to lose ourselves to find ourselves.

Once you understand that, you can give up feeling guilty about play and insist on being playful right to the end. Adult playmakers ride bikes and fly kites. They kayak down rivers, hike up mountains, and otherwise make

time to enjoy whatever calls to them — walking in the woods, going fishing with the family, playing cards, restoring a 1967 Mustang. Play helps make us healthier, happier, calmer, more cooperative. Developmental psychologists see it as a survival technique in our Darwinian struggle to “defy the depressing and dangerous aspects of life,” according to esteemed play-theorist Brian Sutton-Smith, who died March 7, 2015 at age 90. The New York Times obit called him the “Scholar of What’s Fun,” the prolific and precedent-setting author of more than 350 books and articles about the nature of play, and what it means to our well-being. Sutton-Smith — who called his field of expertise “the metaphysics of play” — was a founder of the Association for the Study of Play, and his extensive library and writings are part of the Strong National Museum of Play, in Rochester, New York. “Play was always intended to serve a healing function whether for child or adult,” wrote Sutton-Smith in 2008, showing us his scholarly side. “Play begins as a major feature of mammalian evolution and remains as a major method of becoming reconciled with our being in our present universe. In this respect, play resembles sex and religion, two other forms ... of human salvation in our earthly box.” So how much play is going on in your earthly box? Think about it. If the answer is “too little” or “not enough,” then read on and inspire yourself to break free of guilt and find time in your day, your life, for more play. PLAN FOR PLAY Kids need to play — and suffer from lack of it — and so do adults. What you choose to do in your leisure time can improve your brain function or dull it; it can stimulate your mind and boost your creativity, or it can put the mind to sleep, and next thing you know, you’re ordering commemorative coins and steak knives on

late-night TV. When you build play time into your day — Scrabble at home, Ping-Pong in the workplace — you trigger the release of your own endorphins, allowing a river of joy to run throughout your body, making play a much smarter stress reliever than Johnny Walker or a side of Buffalo Wild Wings with blue cheese (1,940 calories.) PLAY AND RELATIONSHIPS The family that plays together really does stay together. Research shows that sharing fun and laughter with others can foster empathy, compassion and trust. Play brings joy, vitality and resilience to relationships, the experts report, and can be used to heal emotional wounds, and bring on other positive shifts in our being. JUST FOR THE HEALTH OF IT Doing the things you enjoy isn’t just fun, it’s very, very good for you. In a study published in the Annals of Behaviorial Medicine, Professor Matthew Zawadzki, a health psychologist with the University of California states: “When people engage in leisure activity, they have lower stress levels, better mood, a lower heart rate and more psychological engagement — that means less boredom, which can help avoid unhealthy behaviors.” It’s crucial that the leisure activity be one that is thoroughly engaging, Prof Zawadzki warns, because too many distractions — stopping to Tweet, to post pictures — negate the positive effects. And it turns out that the positive effects last for hours, continuing to ease your stress, nourish your brain, improve your mood. NEXT STEPS? This part is up to you. Get your family, friends or work colleagues together for bowling, miniature golf, even karaoke. Plan a hike, a bike ride, a pick-up volleyball game. The possibilities are endless; the payoff is too. And in honor of Brian SuttonSmith, leave your cellphone in the car. ∆

ome couples find the holidays to into arguments sometimes

Paul resents Sandra for spending too much on the kids, again. Chloe is upset over Jeff’s insistence on spending Christmas Day at his mother’s — once more. Ann doesn’t understand why David finds the holidays hard. She gets impatient when he is sullen and withdrawn during times that she wants to celebrate and enjoy with others. “It’s true that the holidays can be tough on couples,” says Brent Bradley, PhD, coauthor with James Furrow, PhD, of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy For Dummies. “Yet it’s important to note that most holiday issues are rarely just about the holidays. They tend to be symptoms — signs of unmet needs or unresolved relationship issues. And once the two of you begin to realize the arguments and bad feelings are signaling deeper misfires between you, the sooner you can start to address them together.” One reason couples can feel blindsided by holiday blow-ups is that this time of

year is “supposed” to be all colored lights, childlike wonder, love, and gratitude. This is, of course, setting yourselves up for failure. Depending on your holiday expectations, they can bring a unique set of pressures — forced family togetherness (with those you’d rather not be together with), ramped-up financial pressures, and jampacked schedules just to name a few. These pressures can bring predictable conflict patterns roaring to the surface. For example: Extended Family Drama There are many differences in people’s needs and expectations: Who will we see? How long will we stay? How will we give “fair” time to both families? These differences trigger couple conflict patterns. Plus, old relationship patterns refine with age, so dysfunctional ties with siblings or parents can add to the turmoil. Finance Friction Couples can have different values about money. For one party, an expensive gift is a sign of affection and sacrifice, a way of communicating value. But if the other party sees money as a form of security, such a gift is imprudent and wasteful, seen not as a token of love but as a financial threat. Busyness Between work parties, social gatherings, school events, family visits, and shopping demands, the holidays can create a frenetic pace. It can be tough to prioritize events and manage time. Couples need to coordinate and work together. In a relationship that may already be time-starved, competing needs can be stressful. Of course, the holidays couldn’t wreak their havoc were it not for the hidden emotional dynamics that manifest in predictable fighting patterns. The authors offer tips to help couples develop solutions together, resolving chronic distress and dissatisfaction and healing the relationship: Holiday 2015

Be real about what you feel This will allow you to head off recurring holiday issues. Most people can predict their partner ’s problematic behaviors based on past experience. This year, instead of biting your tongue and then blowing up after the fact, speak up. Not only can you prevent the issue from occurring, you’re taking a step toward a healthier relationship. “If your spouse goes overboard on spending, exerting pressure on you to do the same, it’s okay to say, ‘When we spend this much, I get anxious,’” explains Bradley. “‘I want to enjoy the season with you, and I don’t want this to spoil that.’ “This opens the door to partners’ being more emotionally real with each other,” he adds. “Perhaps creating a budget would help. Maybe you’ll decide to cut spending on the kids and set a limit on purchases for each other,” he says. Honor differences in experience Face differences together. Talk about them. Don’t dismiss your partner’s feelings or try to lecture them on how they shouldn’t feel that way. “If your partner says, ‘After my dad left when I was a kid, we had skimpy Christmases, and that made me feel unloved. I want to make sure no one in my family feels that way.’ “You might be tempted to respond, ‘That’s ridiculous! How loved will the kids feel if we get tossed out on the street?’” says Furrow. “Instead, respond with empathy and compassion. She is showing her vulnerability, which is a gift. It can open the door to intimacy. So try something simple, such as: ‘Wow. I can see how you’d want it to be special after having gone through that. Maybe we can come together and temper our spending so everyone is happy.’” Identify your limits Watch out for overscheduling. Make choices together about where to 45

ake some time off from the workday suits and stilettos, and celebrate your time off with clothes that are laid back, cozy and stylish.

Here’s some inspiration for those off-duty days ahead: Fisherman sweater The pullover of the season is the fisherman-style knit that has long been known in fashion lingo as the “Aran” sweater -- a type of cable knit traditionally worn by fishermen on the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. The chunky knit sweater never seems to go out of style, and is the perfect way to top off distressed denim jeans. This season it’s a hit in classic cream or icy pastels. Take it up another notch and wear it with a slit midi skirt. Patterned sweater vest Another cozy way to wear your sweaters, it’s the quintessential third piece -- in short and long lengths to layer over T-shirts and leggings or jeans. The graphic patterned knits offer new ways to punch up your weekend separates and give them a new lease on life. Fringed poncho Who doesn’t love a poncho? Throw it on over your everyday jeans and sweaters, and it will make your outfit look more pulled together and special. Try one in velvet, perfect for the holiday season.

Wide legs are back and the weekend is the perfect time to wear these relaxed pants in a simple tweed or check pattern. Pair them with sneakers and an oversized coat and you’ve got comfort at its best. Printed shirt

Checks, plaids or stripes, short or long, take your pick. Then mix and match these patterned shirts with cropped flared jeans or leather leggings, slip into some menswear-style loafers and get out from behind that desk. Easy culotte

Blanket scarf One of the best accessories you can add to your winter wardrobe, this oversized scarf, in a soft patterned or solid cashmere or mohair, will warm up any outfit worn over a jacket or on its own over a T-shirt or sweater. Overalls Your day off is the perfect time to go out and play in something fun like a pair of overalls layered with a turtleneck and your favorite pair of sneakers or ankle boots. Saturdays will never be the same. Jumpsuit Another one-piece wonder that will give you the ease you crave, without all the fussy layering. If it’s chilly outside, simply toss on a blanket scarf or biker jacket. Now that’s the kind of weekend style that we can all jump up and down about! ∆

again. Time to round up those fresh jeans and head into a new season of denim. The stars of the fashion rodeo lineup are extra relaxed, playing like a modern Western with more options than ever. Here are some ways you can ride high and get in the denim spirit: Shimmy into skinny The slim silhouettes are still going strong, so if you love the skinny look, you can easily update it, dressing jeans up by tucking them into a pair of new boots this fall. Opt for straight legs if you’re tired of squeezing into those tighter jeans. The newest way to top off slim jeans? An oversized poncho or swingy cape. Relax with fuller silhouettes While skinny jeans may not be going away, fuller silhouettes are coming on Tom Ford’s knee-high boot detailed with black leather. Holiday 2015

strong, giving us alternative, roomier styles that we can wear for all kinds of occasions. Cropped jeans with raw hems are ultra-chic when worn with heels; cuffed “boyfriend” fits are fun, too, and cute with casual flats. Go for jeans with flare Seventies fashion continues to influence designers, who have taken the high-waisted wide-leg jean to a new level this year. This is probably one of the most versatile denim silhouettes out there now. Wear darker washes with high heels to work and whiskered, distressed washes with flat boots on the weekends. Do denim in new ways Yes, we all want that perfect pair of jeans in our closets, but how about trying a tailored denim shirtdress, a great new midi skirt or a pair of funky overalls? If you don’t have a classic jean jacket in your wardrobe, add one. It will become your “go-to” piece to wear with everything.

Wear it with everything Blue denim plays well with other pieces in your closet. Pair it with creamy neutrals, classic leopard prints, luggage-brown ac-

Embellish it From artsy prints to patchwork to fringe, denim gets detailed this fall with more and more surprises. Designers have decided that this sturdy classic is not going to ride off into the sunset, even as leggings continue to gain ground. Otherwise you are sure to spend all of your time stressed, resentful, and snapping at your spouse. “How you choose to spend your time really matters,” says Bradley. “It sends a very clear signal about where they fall in the grand scheme of things. If your entire holiday season revolves around your family, your friends, and your coworkers, of course your partner will feel that they are your last priority!” Look for rituals that have lost their meaning and eliminate them Ask yourself, Where are we just going through the motions? Handbag Trends Sharon Mosley

H

andbags have become necessary accessories for every occasion: a tote for work, a cocktail clutch for evening, a weekender bag for travel. The list goes on and on. And most of us own more than one handbag. In fact, many of us collect purses like we collect shoes... the more the merrier! Here are some of the best “power” bags to collect this season: The Satchel Tote It’s one of our favorite “all-around” handbags -- a carry-all for the office, for shopping, for everyday wear-and-tear. This is the bag we stuff it all in. You’ll find that the newest totes are a little more structured in silhouette, embossed in luxurious leathers, trimmed with fur and dripping with tassels and fringe -- essential elements in the most fashion-forward wardrobes inspired by the return of ‘70s style. The Graphic Bag Think bold colors, stripes, dots and checks. The graphic patterned clutches or top-handle, ladylike handbags may not be the bags you grab every day, but they will definitely make a statement when you want to have fun with fashion. Add a chain strap for even more up-to-date style. Holiday 2015

The Colorful Bag Purses have moved way beyond the basic black that many of us have depended on for years. These days, think rich reds, gorgeous greens, beautiful blues, pastel pinks, burnished browns or even vibrant neon hues. A pop of color in your handbag can give your whole wardrobe -- especially if you like to wear neutrals -- a fresh new look.

everywhere is the Louis Vuitton leather denim look that is a celebrity favorite. The Supersized Clutch While some satchels and cross-body bags are getting smaller and smaller, many designers are taking the “bigger is better” approach with large clutches that hold much more than just lipstick and a cellphone. These handbags are great for those days when you need to go straight from work to dinner. And in colorful graphic designs, they’re even more hip.

The Cross-Body Bag Another classic that harks back to the 1960s and ‘70s, the longer straps and smaller bags are perfect for everyday excursions, lightening up the load for many of us who carry big bags on a regular basis. These new cross-body bags are turning up in buttery suedes and exotic leathers trimmed with the trend of the year -- fringe and tassels.

The Updated Backpack No, you don’t have to look like you’re heading back to high school with these cool knapsacks. Lush leather, metallic hardware and top handles give these backpacks a whole new elegant lease on fashion life -- all grown-up.

The Ladylike Bag These are the structured top-handle bags that take any outfit up a notch in ultimate chic. Round handles and boxy square shapes add a touch of retro mod chic. Even some cross-body bags get the top-handle treatment this season. One of the hottest designer bags that is sure to be copied

The Furry Handbag Whether you go faux or go real or add a touch of shearling, the fur is flying off the shelves in handbags that get the full fluff treatment. From small, cross-body bags to sleek clutches and puffy totes, there is a furry purse out there for every occasion. Warm up to one of them! ∆

As homeowners and designers look to personalize spaces and create impactful interiors, patterns are being replicated with paint on walls, floors, furniture and more. “Pattern always catches my eye and is my go-to element for adding something special to a space,” said Grace Bonney, design expert and author of “Design*Sponge at Home.” “A pattern is almost always greater than the sum of its parts,” Bonney said. “Beautiful paint colors combine with brilliant linework to create something simple or so over-the-top that it can transform a room instantly.” ScotchBlue Brand partnered with Patternbank, experts in modern style and design, to analyze the world of pattern and forecast five up-and-coming trends that can help take your home from boring to beautiful by adding depth, color and personality. Striking Linework The once simple stripe has found new life with a bold, modern twist. Sharp angles and a fractured, abstract look bring dimension to the standard stripe, and add strong visual impact to even the most awkward spaces around the home. Consider using neutral paint colors for more traditional and elegant looks or brighter colors to infuse energy into the space. Mod Optic Bold geometric designs are making their way into home decor with subtle shifts in scale and color. These strong three-dimensional patterns create a clean, modern style that communicates sophistication and audacity. Infuse contrast and depth to create a clean, modern backdrop for existing decor. The pattern allows you to play with a combination of light and dark colors as a way to add different levels of drama

based on the space. Geo Elemental From north and south to east and west, global influences can be seen in architecture, interior design and on the fashion runways. Merging traditional shapes such as zigzags and diamonds with various color treatments adds a modern feel to deep-rooted tradition, creating a meeting point for contemporary and universal. The lively repetition of eye-catching, sharp lines is ideal for spaces that draw attention in one direction and evoke a strong sense of place. Using earth tones and natural colors add to the global feel of the pattern, while cool neutral colors provide a calming aura. ’70s Revival With retro trends making a comeback in both fashion and design, modernizing retro-themed patterns energizes the home and carries a whimsical accent throughout the space. Give a nod to the stylish looks of the ’70s by building on lavish shapes with modern styling and fresh forms. The combination of high-contrast colors and the big impact of the pattern help make the space feel dynamic and lively. Found Fragments Layering pattern on pattern gives you the creative license to have fun experimenting and showcasing your personal style. With clean lines or shapes juxtaposed against existing prints and designs, this pattern keeps your space down-toearth while still being on trend. Diversify existing decor elements by layering multiple patterns and mediums to adapt any space to match your changing styles. Handling The

W

hile winter can be a wonderland,

offering the outdoor pleasures of skiing, snowboarding, sledding, and skating, it also brings about the chores of snow shoveling, digging out cars, and scraping ice. As we undertake outdoor activities, we need to be mindful that cold temperatures also challenge our bodies and present serious health risks.

Deep Freeze

65 65

Patricia Martin

Hi Class Class Living Living Hi

When core body temperature lowers, it decreases circulation and threatens vital organs. Staying warm and keeping our body temperature normal takes a lot of energy. When we get cold, our body protects itself by drawing as much blood as possible to our vulnerable internal organs. Consequently, our extremities are “sacrificed” as blood is redirected — making our hands and feet take the brunt of the cold. We’ll also shiver, which is another of the body’s defense mechanisms to keep us from losing more heat. Although they are not directly exposed, our lungs can be damaged by breathing in frigid air. In fact, deep inhalation of extremely cold air, over time, may even lead to premature lung aging. Breathing in cold air may also trigger breathing problems in those already susceptible, such as asthmatics. FROSTBITE Frostbite is not just a risk during subzero temperatures — it can happen when the thermometer reads as “high” as 27 degrees Fahrenheit. It occurs when the skin and the body tissue beneath it freeze, making the skin very cold, and then numb, hard, and pale. Areas of the body most prone to frostbite are the smaller, exposed areas, such as fingers, toes, nose, and ears. Frostbite can also occur when you touch something that is frozen, such as ice or metal, as these will also conduct heat away from the body, lower your temperature, and eventually freeze tissue. The first stage of frostbite, called frostnip, doesn’t cause permanent damage. But as frostbite progresses, it affects deeper layers of the skin. In severe cases, affected areas turn black and hard as the tissue dies. Because of numbness, you may not even realize you have frostbite unless someone points it out to you. Symptoms include: • A slightly painful, prickly or itchy Holiday 2015

sensation • Red, white, pale of grayish-yellow skin • Hard or waxy-looking skin • A cold or burning feeling • Numbness • Clumsiness (due to joint and muscle stiffness) • Blistering (which can occur 24 to 48 hours after rewarming of the skin) TREATING FROSTBITE If you suspect someone has frostbite— especially a child — call the doctor or 911 immediately, then take these steps: • Bring the person indoors to a warm place (do not try to thaw frostbite outside as warming and then re-exposing frozen parts to cold can cause permanent damage) • Remove wet clothing • Be gentle — do not vigorously rub frostbitten parts • Thaw frostbitten parts in warm (never hot) water; do not use dry heat (such as a fireplace or heating pad) HYPOTHERMIA Hypothermia takes place when your body loses heat faster than it can produce it, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Normal body temperature is about 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Hypothermia occurs as your body temperatures goes below 95 degrees Fahrenheit. When your body temperature drops, your heart, nervous system, and other vital organs cannot function properly. If untreated, hypothermia may lead to heart failure, respiratory failure, and possibly even death. The most common causes of hypothermia are exposure to cold weather or immersion in cold water. Even if the outside temperature isn’t below freezing, a high wind chill factor may put you at risk. Because water rapidly draws heat out of the body, body 86

Hi Class Class Living Living Hi

I slid headfirst into a rock, and if it weren’t for my helmet, I’d be dead — so I decided to give cross-country another go. It was fabulous and safer. No lines, no snowboarders, no $100 lift tickets. And no need for helmets. Don’t ditch downhill, but also consider cross-country skiing. Here’s why: AN AMAZING WORKOUT

Downhill skiing won’t develop your cardiovascular fitness; cross-country skiing will. You’ll strengthen your heart and lungs, not to mention your legs, arms, shoulders, back and core. Cross-country is a highly efficient aerobic sport, rhythmical and repetitive, requiring continuous effort, building endurance as you go. Downhill is a controlled fall down a mountain. In fact, if you want to downhill safely and well, you’ll get in shape before you hit the slopes. And as a calorie-burner, cross-country beats downhill every step of the way. Every limb, every joint, is in motion, and you get the bonus of working your body in a cross-over fashion — right leg forward, left arm forward; left leg forward, right arm forward — that works both sides of your brain in a coordinated, balanced, blissful way. CONSIDER THE COST

Cross-country skiing costs much less than downhill, so you can afford to do it more often. The best cross-country boots cost a third of what downhill boots cost, and they are 1,000 times more comfortable. A day pass to use groomed trails might cost 10 bucks compared to $40-to-$100 dollars or more to go downhill. And lessons! Learning to downhill ski can take years. You can absorb the basics of cross-country in a lesson or two, and then practice, pracHoliday 2015

tice, practice. And then there’s the cost of hurting yourself. Downhill skiing is considered a highrisk, high injury sport. Cross-country isn’t. The pace is slower, but the pay off can be just as thrilling. FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

I’ve heard it said that if you can walk, you can cross-country ski. It’s not exactly true because there are skills involved, and you need to learn them to maximize your fun and minimize your risk. But just about anyone of any age can earn to cross-country ski, so the 8-yearolds and 80-year-olds can play together, and hot-dogging snowboarders are nowhere to be seen. THE GEAR HAS IMPROVED

Backcountry cross-country skiing — ungroomed trails on wider skis, with edges — is giving new life to cross-country, and so is skate skiing. The new backcountry skis are much lighter (and shorter) than the old ones. It makes the uphills much easier and the downhills more controllable. Learning to snow plow is essential no matter what your gear, and the newer, lighter skis with edges make that much easier, too. YOU CONNECT TO NATURE

When you downhill ski, you need to focus full attention on your technique, your turns and avoiding trouble. The margin for error is small. When you crosscountry ski, not so much. It’s slower, less risky, more meditative. You can look around, absorb the beauty, appreciate nature in all her winter splendor. Part of the magic of cross-country is the regular, repetitive breathing — slow, steady, deep. It takes you to another place, physically, mentally, spiritually. ∆

Portland’s culinary clout comes into focus every October during Harvest on the Harbor, a four-day festival that attracts food and wine lovers from all over the country. This year’s festival kicked off with the Moonlight Gala, a five-course dinner with wine pairing, each course consisting of two small plates prepared by top local chefs. Highlights included halibut cheek with braised kimchi, duck breast with poached pear, and short rib with butternut squash. The festival’s top culinary event was the Stage Dinner, a sit down six-course dinner paired with wines and served on the stage of Merrill Auditorium alongside a magnificent pipe organ. The menu included mussels escabeche with beets and nuts, grilled octopus with cous-cous, roasted squash and greens with coconut spice, Maine salmon with chestnut butter, and fillet of beef with wine sauce. The festival’s top attraction was the competition for the Maine Lobster Chef of the Year award. Five chefs took turns on stage cooking their intricate lobster dishes and the audience got to taste bite size samples of their creations. Another popular event was the Maine Marketplace, featuring food, wines and products. Tastings included cooked dishes,

baked goods, wines, chocolates and more. At the Top of the Crop, each chef prepared a dish with ingredients from a local farm. The festival also featured a barbecue cookout, as well as wine, beer, whiskey and specialty cocktail tastings. Tickets for the festival are sold in advance and part of the proceeds support local charities. www.harvestontheharbor.com. You don’t have to wait till next year’s festival to enjoy the city’s culinary might. Portland is a treasure chest of restaurants ranging from waterfront shacks to fine cuisine. Make sure to dine at Zapoteca, a Mexican inspired restaurant where chef Shannon Bard creates South of the Border dishes with local overtones. Order the Taco De Langosta, a half Maine lobster sautéed in duck fat and served with salsa, corn and charred tortillas. Also don’t miss the delicious adobo glazed duck breast with cranberry pecan mole and truffled brussel sprouts. www.zapotecarestaurant.com The new Evo is another hot restaurant, run by chef Matt Gin, the 2015 winner of Maine Lobster Chef of the Year title. The cuisine features a modern interpretation of Mediterranean/Lebanese dishes. Order the chef’s mezze tasting for the table — a progressive multi-course dinner with items such as salmon falafel, lobster, and vegetarian and meat dishes. www.evoportland.com. 84

As you approach the Dolomites, the road narrows and winds and you are slowly immersed in a breathtaking landscape of towering mountains and jagged peaks, many rising to an elevation of over 10,000 feet. The picturesque mountains surround sprawling valleys and plateaus where villages with red-roof houses shimmer in the bright sunshine. Cortina D’Ampezzo The village of Cortina D’Ampezzo is considered “La Regina,” or The Queen of the Dolomites, one of Italy’s most famous tourist destinations. Once the site of the 1956 Olympics, Cortina continues to be a powerful magnet attracting ski and winter sports enthusiasts from around the world. With 34 ski lifts and miles of interconnecting slopes and trails, the area offers an almost uninterrupted skiing experience. The best way to enjoy your day on the mountains and explore the vast terrain is by using the services of a native alpine guide. (www.dolomitiskirock.com). The guide picks you up at your hotel and, based on your abilities and requests, takes you to pristine powder slopes, scenic trails and mountaintop Rifugi (shelters). You can also try other winter activities such as ski mountaineering, snowshoeing and even defying gravity with a snow-kite. During the warm season, the area’s numerous alpine trails and rugged peaks become a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers and rock climbers. Stop for a photo at Cinque Torri, a rock formation of five towering cliffs jutting into the blue sky. Continue to the WWI open air museum and walk along the narrow trenches where Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers fought each other while braving the frigid winters and steep mountains. Guestrooms differ in size and configuration, many overlooking the Dolomites’ peaks, ski slopes and Cortina’s chalet style houses in the green valley below. Rooms are decorated with period furniture, wood carvings, hand painted finishes and plush bedding. Modern bathrooms with marble floors and soaking tubs complete the decor. Breakfast at the Cristallo is served buffet style in La Veranda, an elegant restaurant overlooking the mountains. some tips for staying warm and healthy. • Keep yourself hydrated. You may be surprised to know that your body uses more water in winter than in the summer. That’s because it takes a lot of energy to keep warm, and the heat generated to maintain a stable temperature uses up moisture. Drink plenty of water (or water mixed with 50% fruit juice). Avoid coffee and non-herbal tea as caffeine is dehydrating, and ditto with carbonated beverages like soda.

Hot beverages may seem more soothing, but you’re better off with warm or tepid drinks because you’ll be more likely to consume more. • Your skin needs more hydration in the winter, too. Keep a pot of water on top of your heater to replace lost moisture, and invest in a humidifier because dry heat also draws water out of the air. • Dress in layers for thermal protection. You can peel them off as your body heats up. Keep dry, especially your feet, since wetness intensifies the damage cold 90

HANDLING THE DEEP FREEZE — From Pg. 87 weather does to your body. • Because you lose heat through the top of your head, wear a hat. • Wear good quality socks and even sock liners and water proof footwear to keep feet warm and dry as wetness accelerates any “deep freeze” effects. • Don’t forget your face, ears, and eyes. UV protection is important (use a natural sunscreen), and good polarized sunglasses will prevent “snow blinding” as the sun glares off snow. Use goggles to prevent wind chill. Because the nose and ears are easily frostbitten, and cold air breathed into lungs is harmful, wear a facemask if you expect to be outside for any length of time or when the temperature drops below 21 degrees Fahrenheit. Wear a scarf at all times and ear muffs. • Think mittens, not gloves. When the temperature hits 32degrees Fahrenheit or below, your fingers can actually get frost bitten when you wear gloves because fingers are separated and can’t keep each other warm. • Be sure to stretch and warm up before any outdoor activity, as cold muscles are more easily injured. Then afterwards stretch and cool down. • When shoveling snow, choose an ergonomic, light-weight shovel and use your knees to lift instead of your back. Pace yourself, and lift light loads, to prevent strain and injury. Never let your breathing get heavy and labored, and don’t let your heart race — stop and rest whenever you feel your body is getting stressed. • When walking in deep snow on unknown terrain, take a walking stick to avoid losing your footing in case there’s a sudden drop or unseen obstacle. Bring a thermos of fluids so you’ll stay hydrated, and a flashlight in case you fall over and need to attract attention. Of course, the “buddy system” is always the best. ∆ Holiday 2015
