MORGAN LAMBERT’S ALAN PARKER MARKS

50

YEARS IN THE GAS INDUSTRY

Alan Parker, Specialist Services Director at Morgan Lambert, reflects on his remarkable 50-year journey in the gas industry.

"On the 4th of August 1975 I reported to the gate house at Rotherham Gas Depot to start my gas fitting apprenticeship with East Midlands Gas Board as it was called then, later becoming British Gas.

In 1979 I passed my City and Guilds exams, became a qualified Gas Fitter, then did my assimilation training in Nottingham and became a qualified Gas Service Engineer.

I spent a further 8 years at Emgas mostly as an emergency engineer, covering gas escapes and emergency repairs, had stints as a training instructor and acting supervisor. My claim to fame was being part of the winning team at the 1983 Gas Safety and Emergency competition.

In 1987 I left the gas board and went to work for Myson as a warranty service engineer and after a year doing that, I went on to work for Myson Industrial Division as a Sales Engineer, visiting consultants and trying to get them to use our equipment.

Following this I had a short spell as a marketing manager for IMI Air Conditioning before moving to CORGI in 1991 as an Inspector.

After two years as an inspector, I was appointed as a Senior Inspector and shortly after as an Area Manager covering the North of England and Scotland, managing a team of 50+ managers and inspectors.

In 2009 when CORGI became Gas Safe Register I accepted redundancy and was employed by Morgan Lambert when the company was owned by Vic Lord. Sixteen years later, I am still here, now Specialist Services Director and on 4th August 2025, was my 50 years in the industry anniversary.

However, I am not ready to retire yet (just had my 66th birthday so I am officially an OAP and got my bus pass) as I thoroughly enjoy my role and work with some great people both at Morgan Lambert and the ICA Group as a whole."

Huge congratulations to Alan on this incredible milestone and his outstanding contribution to the industry!

I used to work as a Chef in fine dining restaurants for 12 years, I then changed my career to a more sustainable lifestyle - which brought me into the world of Accounting and Finance. I now cook as a hobby instead!

How would your friends describe you?

Easy going, easy to get on with & likes to keep busy.

Who are your top three dinner guests dead or alive?

My wife and two little girls.

Tell us about your role?

My role is very varied, it mainly includes working on the Hickton Quality Control side of things but I also get involved in lots of other areas too.

Why did you join the company?

It offered a good step for me to advance my career and opened me up to new opportunities. We also have a friendly team and there is still much more for me to learn.

Great work-life balance and flexibility. The people are great too and always helpful / easy to get on with.

Having fun with my family, playing golf or watching the F1 and Football. I like exploring places and going on holidays when I can, as well as teaching my two little girls DIY.

If you had the worlds attention for 30 seconds, what would you say?

“Could you please direct your attention to someone else, I am extremely uncomfortable right now.” Or I would ask the powers at be to reveal the truth about the moon landings.

If you could go back 10 years and tell yourself something, what would it be?

That things will always work themselves out and to stick with your studies as there is light at the end of the tunnel.
