Dr. John Chenault Dr. John Chenault, longtime music educator and administrator for Chesapeake Public Schools, is celebrating his retirement this spring. Dr. Chenault has been a staple in the Hickory Band community for nearly 30 years. Dr. Chenault established Hickory Middle School as a premier band program in Virginia and under Dr. Chenault’s leadership, the bands at Hickory Middle and High School became one of the largest and most talented in the state.

Dr. Chenault has continued his support for music in Chesapeake as the Music Supervisor for Chesapeake Public Schools. Under his leadership, music teachers in Chesapeake knew they were supported and that music would continue to be a vital part of education in Chesapeake.

Dedicated to Dr. Chenault Australian Up-Country Song, was originally written for choral ensemble. The composer opted for a “wordless text” of syllables “ta di ra dam” to avoid putting constraints on the meaning, tone colors and sonorities. Music carries its own special message to the soul--a message that is weakened if words are set to the music. This message is unique and different for each individual, as each person connects to music in a different way.

Dr. Chenault has developed relationships and connections with thousands of people over his career. Dr. Chenault has impacted students, teachers and community members in meaningful and unique ways. Just as Australian UpCountry Song was written to connect with each person’s soul in a different way, Dr. Chenault has had the same amazing impact for so many in our community.
