With issue 12 came a whole new set of challenge pictures, so read on and discover if your creation got picked and printed…
Every so often we seem to hit upon something that really inspires your imagination, and when it comes to the Readers’ Challenge it seems you can’t get enough of penguins!
Last time they appeared we received a deluge of entries and this time around it was the same story. From illustrated penguins to artistic penguins to parachuting penguins – you’ve made our Antarctic friends get up to all sorts of mischief!
But it’s not all about the penguins. A lot of you also focused on the photo of the lady and transformed her with all sorts of wonderful e ects. It was good to see that some of you incorporated Photoshop’s lters into your work, as well as the techniques covered in past tutorials.
Anthony scooped the winning title with his brilliant illustration. His handling of the Pen tool resulted in a comical yet accomplished piece of art. Also a big well done to Michael for his mutant rhino, Paul for his ower vision and John for his swanky vector vision.
But you all did exceptionally well, and should feel very proud of yourselves. If you didn’t make it this time, enter our challenge on page 98 and try again!
Untitled
“I was inspired by the Pop Art tutorial and Adnams beer adverts to create this illustration. I used a selection from the beach to create a textured feel to the sand. I used the Pen tool to create the shapes that made up the penguin and woman’s head. I used the hills in the road photo to create the background using a similar method to the Japanese woodcutting tutorial. Finally, I used a soft round brush to create the clouds.”

Self-determination?
“I have had a go at the Readers’ Challenge choosing the pictures to use at random – it was quite diffi cult to fi nd a way of integrating the rhino! It took a while, but I’m very pleased with the end result. It’s the fi rst time I have created anything like this.”

Zebra Crossing

“This one set off from me trying to see if I could lay a different animal skin over the rhino. Once I did that it just got daft…”

Modifi ed Highway
Scott has taken the road photo and applied his own photos and designs.
Creative Randomness
“Buddha’s T-shirt was an idea planted in my head and I thought, ‘What the heck!’”
Summer Burst
“The female model gave me an idea for a mirrored image of fl owers framing her.”
