Rocket club finishes fifth at Nationals in Washington This past weekend the CFHS S.T.A.R.S. made the journey to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC), hosted by the National Association of Rocketry (NAR). Five members along with leader Zeb Nicholson packed up a van and drove 15 hours with their rocket in tow with hopes of ranking nationally for their rocket design, and they returned with a top finish in the country.

Over the rainy weekend, the team had two launches, one against the top 100, and one against the top 25.

“Going into the competition, we had pretty high expectations. At the end of day one, we were in eighth place, and by the second launch, two teams were disqualified and one team didn’t do as well,” member Ryan Ritter said.

Out of 807 teams in the nation, only the top 100 teams were selected to attend and compete in this competition. This is the team’s second year at the national competition, and this year has been quite the improvement. “Going from 70th place last year to fifth place this year has been really amazing. The positive attitude of the team and work ethic has contributed to our success,” Nicholson said.

technology, but that gives their rocket a lot more room for error. We have a very concrete design, so our flights are very consis-

tent, which is key for a national competition,” Nicholson said.

The team took away a trophy for its success with placing fifth place in the nation, along with $7,500 in cash and $500 for a airplane building contest. Teams had 45 minutes to build a small model airplane, and their team had only 15 due to their launch.

“We still took home first place in that challenge thanks to my awesome design.” said group member Will Burken with a smile.

Not only did the team take away fifth place and some cash, they are also invited to work with NASA this upcoming year for a rocket launch in Alabama next fall.

“We have to type up a 75-90-page report of what the purpose of the launch will be, and fly it one mile up in the air. It is a really big deal, and we still have to discuss if we want to take the offer,” Nicholson said.

The National Association of Rocketry has already put out the guidelines for next year’s rocket, and the team is hoping to do even better next year. “We improved so much this year and are hoping to get top three or even first place next year,” Ritter said.

Our View

National Police Week calls for support of Law Enforcement Monday kicked off the start to National Police Week, a week of appreciation of fallen and currently serving law enforcement officers. With the current cultural climate tending to be very anti-law enforcement spurred by politicians and political movements, police officers need our support more than ever.

Take the time this week to reflect on the brave men and women who have given their lives protecting complete strangers. Already this year, 48 officers have made the ultimate sacrifice protecting others.

One of the fallen lost his life while serving just a few weeks ago here in Iowa. Deputy Mark Burbridge and another deputy were escorting two prisoners back to their jail cells from a court appearance when one of the inmates disarmed one of the deputies and shot them both, killing deputy Burbridge.

Law Enforcement Officers risk their lives everyday to protect and serve their communities, and lately their service to society has been repaid with attacks against them, and calls for violence. Police officers are berated and villanized in popular music and media listened to by easily influenced teenagers daily.

As today marks the end of National Police Week, reflect on the sacrifices made by few, to save many.

Next time you see a police officer, thank them, because one day, they might just save your life.

The Punisher skull, inspired by the Marvel anti-hero, is now a symbol of fighting evil and crime. It is used mainly by military and law enforcement around the world. The Thin Blue Line on this one signifies support of law enforcement.

‘Rape’ should not be tossed around as slang term Google says rape is the “Unlawful sexual activity and usually sexual intercourse carried out forcibly or under threat of injury against the will usually of a female or with a person who is beneath a certain age or incapable of valid consent.”

Dictionary.com says it’s “Unlawful sexual intercourse or any other sexual penetration of the vagina, anus, or mouth of another person, with or without force, by a sex organ, other body part, or foreign object, without the consent of the victim.”

What do these definitions have in common? They all imply that rape is an unlawful sexual activity that an offender does to a victim, definitely not a “cool’ phrase or word to say.

So why do so many people treat it like that?

I have attended many schools throughout my life, and as I got older, I began to notice something. Some people, especially young teenage boys, use the word rape as a joke.

I heard one student say, “If you all don’t shut up, I’m go-

ing to protect the household/ family/themselves from any further crimes by the offender or felt they were unsafe to do so, but the reason that most people don’t report it is that they aren’t always believed. If the police don’t believe they are telling the truth or the offender is a very good liar, the victim will be met with very unsettling questions such as, “What were you wearing?”

“Were you flaunting yourself?”

“Did you ask for it in any way verbally or physically?”

“Were you wearing anything revealing or flashy?”

“Did you lead them on?”

It seems that even in the law, rape is treated like a joke. Somehow no matter what happened, the court will always find a way to make the offender innocent.

Even just using the word rape in regular life to describe something good or bad happening to you such as, “Yes! I just raped that test!” and “Aw man, that test totally raped me,” should not be acceptable.

So, he basically told me that unlawful sexual activity being done to someone who is unable or hasn’t given consent to the offender, is a joke?

Out of every 1,000 rapes, 994 perpetrators will walk free.

This means that 99.4 percent of rapists will not be charged for their assault.

Out of every 1,000 sexual assaults, only 344 will be reported to the police. Now there are many reasons for this, including they are ashamed/embarrassed, try-

to commit or attempt suicide than non-victims. Sexual assault is very scary and can leave life-long mental as well as physical scars on the victim.

“In the United States, approximately 16 percent of women and three percent of men have been victims of attempted or completed rape.

Fifteen percent of sexual assault victims are under 12,” Huffingtonpost.com informs readers.

Again, rape is a sexual assault and a crime, so why would anyone especially kids and young teenagers want to associate anything with such a terrifying and negative word?

Using other words such as gay and the N-word can have the same effects.

Let’s take a look at the word gay. One of the first results on google is, “(of a person, especially a man) ho-

mosexual.” But the second definition is, “Lighthearted and carefree.”

One of the definitions on urbandictonary.com reads, “Often used to describe something stupid or unfortunate. Originating from homophobia. Quite preferable among many teenage males in order to buff up their ‘masculinity.’”

Huh? That last “definition” basically clears up why some people still use the word gay as an insult. Although society is getting a little better at accepting this word and people who are gay, it isn’t used much as an insult anymore except by homophobes or unintellegent teenagers and/ or adults. But if you would take a second and look up what happened when the first gay people began to come “out of the closet,” I’m sure you can see what an effect it had when people didn’t support it/didn’t believe in it.

So let’s go back to the main question, why do kids think it is acceptable to use rape as a slang word? It doesn’t look like such a cool word now does it?

Perhaps it’s that most rape victims are put off by the court saying that what they were wearing was showing too much skin and it lured the offender on. Maybe it’s because the law and society itself treats rape like a joke. It could be because kids aren’t educated enough about how the law could one day let them down because of what they were wearing or doing one night a few years from now. Or maybe we just need to teach our kids the right and wrong of the world?

The truth is here. We need to teach our kids that if someone says “yes” at the beginning and starts to say “no” later, that one needs to stop.

We need to teach kids that we could make this world a better place just by standing up and speaking out.

Rape is a very serious thing that should not be treated as a joke or a slang word. Rape is real, and it could happen to anyone regardless of age or gender.

Seniors say so long with grad parties Many seniors are hosting graduation parties in the upcoming weeks, and here are some tips on how to make your party stand out or what to do when you get invited to a grad party, whether it is your first or your 20th this graduation season.

Express yourself When deciding on decorations and types of food, don’t conform to what is the most popular or what you think most people will like. You should have your grad party express you and what you are planning on doing. Have your favorite foods and beverages along with decorations to make your party stand out and be memorable to people attending.

Cards If you plan on attending a lot of grad parties this year, it could be best if you go to Target and stock up

on cards. Depending on how well you know a person, the thought is what counts. You could even go to a gas station and buy a few $10 gift cards. Saving a few bucks on gas is always a bonus that almost anyone can use.

Activities Depending on where you are having your grad party, people like to be entertained. Some plan on just stopping by, and others will stay for a long time.

Younger kids are common too, so having games such as Frisbee in your backyard, or tic tac toe with the school you are going to will make your guests entertained.

Prom party hypnotist casts spell on students In the wee hours of Sunday morning, May 14, students were hypnotised at the after prom party. Dr. Al Snyder put about 31 students under his spell, making them do insanely ridiculous things.

Perhaps the most entertaining part for the audience was simply watching the way people interacted with each other. When hypnotized, the brain becomes ultra willing to follow suggestions, as well as increasingly emotional. This means lots of hysterical laughter, sometimes followed by hysterical crying. For the audience, these huge emotional shows can be quite comical.

It is very unclear as to when hypnosis began being practiced. Many religious books reference it’s use, though usually as a form of meditation. It didn’t start being a form of entertainment until supposedly the 1950s.

Hypnosis has it’s fair share of doubters. It’s effects and strange simplicity make it hard for people to believe in it’s legitimacy. However, the science is there. Hypnosis is a genuine, real practice. Whether or not it’s legitimacy is constant, especially in a large social setting, can only be confirmed by a participant.

Senior Summer Pieters was eagerly awaiting the show to start. When Snyder asked for volunteers, Pieters was one of the first hands up. Sadly, she was not

called on, but she wasn’t out of luck. The hypnotizing isn’t just for those on stage.

Those who follow the same directions in the audience can end up in a hypnotized state. Lucky for Pieters, it not only worked for her in the audience, but a chair on staged opened up. And in her confused, adrift state, she made it on stage for a better part of the show.

“I don’t remember anything about what happened on stage. People told me I shouted and laughed a lot. I also yelled something about being vegan, but it was as if I was asleep for the whole thing.”

Pieters said she would likely be in the minority due to the simple fact that she remembered nothing. Snyder stated how hypnosis is nearly identical to sleepwalking and dreaming. If one is able to remember dreams, it is likely they’ll remember their actions and emotions during hypnosis.

Most people who got hypnotized described the experience as funny. The dream-like state resulted in the illusion that time was slower. The participants awoke from their hypnosis state feeling refreshed and energetic.

Pieters only has one tip of advice for doubters. “You just have to try it. That’s all I’ll say,” she said.

Senior sets goals for year in France In the following months, senior student Tineke Hassman will be venturing across seas to the destination of France to continue her education.

Hassman will be living in SaintJean du Gard, France, next year while attending le lycee, a system equivalent to high school in America.

Hassman said, “I have been awaiting this opportunity since middle school. I love to travel and learn new languages and culture. My dad was an exchange student in Holland when he was in high school, and his experience and stories have been my main inspiration for traveling abroad.”

Hassman’s four years of French education have assisted her in the preparation for France in addition to consistent exposure to the language.

“I have been studying French for four years already, and that has helped a lot. Reading books and watching YouTube in French has also helped me a ton. Just listening and trying to understand any bit of French is a step toward preparing for next year.”

Hassman continues to receive an overwhelming amount of love and support on her journey ahead.

“My family is so supportive in my decision to study abroad. Of course, I will miss them, and they will miss me, but they know that this is a once in a lifetime experience, and it is my time to go.”

While Hassman is away, she said she hopes to gain new found knowledge, relationships and memories she can bring back home.

“The first and most important thing I hope to accomplish is becoming fluent in the language. Second, I hope to make connections with people all over the world. Third, I want to experience anything and all things relating to France. Overall, in France I hope to have the best time of my life and find who I am alongside all of the other exchange students.”

New Peet staff reflect on year of lessons At the beginning of the year, 46 new teachers joined the Cedar Falls Community School District. Many coming from surrounding districts, but also many from around America. Ten of them are Peet Junior High teachers.

“It has been great here this year. There is a lot of parent support in the school, and they are really involved in the students,” Peet English teacher Nathaniel Norby said.

Norby came from North Dakota to teach ninth grade English.

“The year isn’t over for me yet to stop enjoying things. I have enjoyed enrichments during Tiger Time a lot. Getting to know the students better is a cool thing my kids didn’t have at the school I used to teach at.

I usually coached, so it’s nice to see students not in a classroom setting,” he said.

Students have been very welcoming to incoming teachers. Math teacher Kimberly Kockler, who came from Tipton, was pleasantly surprised by her Cedar Falls students.

“I have felt very welcomed at Peet. There was a group of girls that brought me a basket full of baby gifts. I wasn’t expecting it at all. It was a surprise. I love telling people about it.” Kockler is expecting to have her baby in the next two weeks. Kockler has been able to focus on her passion for teaching math.

“It’s been great. I have really enjoyed it. At my other school, I had to teach some elective classes. I like teaching math, and so I only get to teach math here, which I love.

There are a lot more opportunities in Cedar Falls.”

Daniel Oltman, a social studies teacher at Peet, came from North Tama.

“I have had a lot of fun.

My fondest memory at Peet is standing out in the hallway watching kids laugh and smile and enjoy being in school. I enjoy the staff that I work with because they are very professional and very dedicated to education and in general I enjoy kids.”

Two charities making plans for Valley residents 100 Women Who Care sponsors local groups every three months

Chills run up and down Bethany Benner’s spine as the winning charity is announced at the end of the 100 Women event.

Once every quarter, members of the 100 Women Who Care and others arrive at the event and write a blank check for $100. When walking in the door, people can choose to nominate and write down charities throughout the Cedar Valley.

Once everyone has arrived at the event, finished socializing and written down a charity, three will be chosen by the 100 Women group.

Once the three are chosen, the person who nominated the charity will be allowed five minutes to speak on their behalf.

After the three speeches, a motivational speaker will be onstage making a speech, and shortly after, people at the event will be able to vote for whichever charity should win.

Then, a charity is chosen to win up to $10,000 or more, and they are able to speak about what they stand for, their story and what the money will be going towards in the Cedar Valley.

“The charities have to be a 5013C in order to receive the funds, and the funds have to be spent and used within the Cedar Valley,” Benner said.

Beau’s Bracelets just part of bigger push to help families address disability needs Student Senate will being selling handmade bracelets in the Tiger’s Den as a part of the fundraiser Beau’s Beautiful Blessings. All of the proceeds will go to a Place To Play, an all inclusive park at Greenhill city park.

Bracelets will be $1 during power hour. Sophomore Kylie and PE teacher Paul Elser will make an appearance at the booth.

An all inclusive park means that any kid of any disability will be able to enjoy the park while remaining safe and easy.

The park is going to try to focus on three main things, surface, safety and accessibility.

The plans are to make the surface a flat surface with no

wood chips or rock for wheelchairs or walkers to get stuck in. The safety will be a fence with no drop offs.

The accessibility feature is a big part in the Place To Play park. There will be easy access to swings and a zip line. Making the playground accessible to kids with disabilities is a main goal allowing all kids to play together.

The playground will be built on the corner of Algonquin and Ashworth in Cedar Falls.

There are 28 chapters of the whole organization in Iowa, but 100 Women was started in 2006 in Michigan by Karen Duigan.

A hospital in her town was in need of cribs, and Duigan had the idea of pulling together 100 people who would

be able to donate $100 rather than pull together $10,000, and from then on the organization grew rapidly.

The 100 Women Who Care of the Cedar Valley was founded last year in January, and since then, all together, the group has raised over $70,000.00 to donate every

three months to different local charities through this event.

“Some people aren’t able to volunteer, don’t want to or can’t put in the work in, but with this organization and this event, you don’t have to take a lot of time, just $100 and a few hours out with your girlfriends,” Benner said.

The board members of the Cedar Valley Chapter include Lisa Van Hermert, the homemaker; Tina Miller, the director of operations; Benner, VP of sales and marketing; Katie Walsworth, Kristin Pease, Deanna Wheeler and Beth Zars.

“It’s an easy concept. You don’t have to be out all night,” Benner said.

Benner also said it’s a really fun night and even more fun organization to be a part of.

“It’s like a social event, to get together with everybody, meet friends and have a girls night but to also give back.”

The next event will be held on Thursday, August 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., the location and sponsor is to be determined, but for more information, visit the 100 Plus Women Who Care Cedar Valley website.

Past charities that have won $10,000-$15,000 from this event were the House of Hope, Sing Me to Heaven, Karsyn’s Krusaders, Beau’s Beautiful Blessings and Caden’s Closet, who actually received $19,000 after giving a heart wrenching and emotional speech.

“You get goosebumps when you announce the winner,” Benner said.

“Some ladies that come there have no intentions of receiving the fund, but things happen for a reason, and those charities end up the winners.”

In streaming music options, question remains: to shuffle or to choose

With just a few quirks, Poptropica offers islands for quick adventure At its core, “Poptropica” doesn’t have a story. You travel to different islands, and each island has a story.

Some of the stories connect, but that’s minimal.

Overall, the game is very enjoyable and is actually somewhat educational. This might drive some people away, but it helps you learn things without you actually knowing.

It makes you think a little bit if you want to solve the islands’ puzzles in a legit manner.

A huge pro that I can say is that, as of a recent update, each island has a ranking. One skull means easy, two skulls medium and three skulls hard.

Hard islands are hard, but also not if you know what you’re doing.

One con I’ve found is that you move with the mouse, which can be

quite annoying when you have to make specific jumps and you either overshot it or undershot it. Along with this, the game also requires membership to beat some islands 100 percent or do their extra parts.

Membership gets you a lot in this game, but it's not majorly required.

Overall, “Poptropica” is a very fun game. It's not a game I’d put a ton of time into, but it is a fun game to play sometimes. The tutorial is really long and unskippable for new players, so that's one huge con. The game also has a habit of not explaining where to go on certain islands.

This is usually on three skull islands.

However, despite all this, “Poptropica” is an excellent web game.

Papa Roach’s six new singles achieve varying degrees of hits and misses This past month has been a momentous time for the band by the name of Papa Roach. The band has so far released six new singles off of their newest album, “Crooked Teeth.”

Below, I’ve rated each single based on my own opinions.

6. “None of the Above”: The band’s newest single, “None of the Above,” has some good riffs, and Jacoby Shaddix (vocals) certainly hasn’t been skimping on his practice. However, I feel that the timid parts of the song don’t mesh well with the harder bits, like they’ve managed to do in the past.

5. “Periscope”: I legitimately enjoyed this single. I thought it was well thought-out and nicely delivered. The only thing that knocked this song back on the ranking was the guest singer, Skylar Grey. I feel that her dedication to the song was minimal, and whenever she sang, it felt sort of ... off. Not her best work.

4. “Born For Greatness”:

Papa Roach’s third single from their new album, this song brought me back to the days of “lovehatetragedy” (2002).

The electronic riffs that occurred during the chorus grated the ears a bit, but everything else on the track was amazing, even the use of the vocal distortion.

3. “American Dreams”: This track is very enjoyable overall and displays Jacoby’s knack for grabbing the

listener’s attention and taking them on a trip all throughout the song.

2. “Crooked Teeth”: The titletrack was the first single to be released and was a nice catalyst for Papa Roach and everyone doubting their skills. It brought the thunder, and it reminded P. Roach fans of their debut, “Infest,” and its rap-rock focus.

1. “Help”: A week or two after the band released the first single, a second single quickly surpassed the popularity of the first. “Help” is a call for assistance from the screwed-up mind of Shaddix, and it strikes many emotional chords as it climaxes in the chorus. This is definitely the recommended single from Papa Roach’s new album, due May 19.

Recently, I purchased Spotify Premium just to see what all the fuss was about. I have to say, my mind was blown.

No more buying songs and wasting your money when you don’t listen to those songs anymore. You can create a playlist of all the songs you enjoy, and if you don’t want a song in your library anymore, it doesn’t cost you anything. You can even download the songs to your phone so you don’t use up data on long road trips. Premium is relatively cheap, at only $10 a month (without Premium, shuffle is switched on permanently).

Before Spotify, I used Pandora, strictly because I enjoyed the shuffle aspect of it. Just choose a station (or create your own), and off you go. You can even “like” or “dislike” songs to customize your station to your liking, and disliked songs never show up again. Pandora Premium allows you to listen to your music uninterrupted, getting rid of those pesky ads.

Also, you are allowed unlimited skips for songs that you don’t want to listen to at the moment, as opposed to the “six skips a day” rule. Premium for Pandora is also $10 a month.

Between Spotify and Pandora, both have their strengths and weaknesses, but I believe it comes down to this: Do you like your music permanently shuffled, or

do you want to choose the songs you play? The difference isn’t monetary, it’s preference.

New SingleSpeed location delivers enticing atmosphere, delicious menu As I locked my bike to the bike rack right outside SingleSpeed in Waterloo, my jaw dropped. It was three times as big as the one in Cedar Falls.

My family was taking a Mother’s Day bike ride and decided to try the new restaurant. We were all starving, so the smells of warm bread and fresh greens almost me made faint as we walked in.

The food wasn’t the only thing that gave me a warm welcome, the place was huge and had many different open areas. One area was the dining area with big tables and booths, and it was more of a family friendly area. There was a chalkboard filled with kids’ colorful drawings. There was also a place to the right of the dining area where a family could eat and play games like UNO or SORRY. As we walked around and moved to another room, we saw there were other seating options, such as a place to sit at the bar and drink, or long wooden rectangular lunch tables. They also had a room to brew their famous beer like Tip The Cow, which is a cocoa espresso milk stout.

The brewery was close to the size of the downstairs of my house, which is pretty big.

Since they are very eco-friendly and the name of the restaurant is called SingleSpeed, you would think they would include a biking theme somewhere, and they do. They have another

area in the restaurant that has a huge bike rack to lock up your bikes. About 20 percent of the people there were wearing bike jerseys.

After we were done looking around the huge building, we sat down at our booth that was made to seat 10. Everything on the menu looked fabulous, so we had to order an appetizer. We splurged on the sweet corn and jalapeño hummus with spelt grain pita. The pita was warm, and when it is served warm you know the restaurant is on top of their game, and it’s going to be good. The hummus was also to die for; you could taste the garbanzo beans, so I knew it was homemade.

At the beginning, the service was a little slow and the waitresses wasn’t checking on us the most, but the din-

ner took care of the lack of attention.

My brother and I both ordered turkey burgers with a side of vegetables. I got brussel sprouts and he got asparagus.

I usually love brussel sprouts but these ones had hoisin and peanut butter sauce and tasted off to my taste buds. So my brother and I switched, I also liked his burger better, mine was pretty good, but his had more flavor, and I LOVE flavor.

He wouldn’t switch his burger, though. He got the signature turkey, and it had this great gorgonzola cheese taste.

If one is not looking for burgers, they also had wings, salads, flat breads and tacos. One of their options under the wing category was chicken and waffles. So, if you're a breakfast and

lunch person and are looking for a healthy option, hit them up.

SingleSpeed is a bit different because the wings are oven baked instead of fried, and everything is fresh.

The bread they use, everything from the buns to the flatbread is also special as it is made by Milkbox Bakery. Milkbox is a new local bakery and uses no preservatives, so it is very fresh.

SingleSpeed’s atmosphere is really what drew my family in. It joins the ranks of other great restaurants in the Cedar Valley. As my stomach got full and and my plate was being cleared, we knew it was time to bike back to Cedar Falls, or we might burst.

Sugar cookie truffles make tasty snack

I had never heard of such a treat until a classmate brought them in for us to try. I immediately fell in love with the taste and texture of these little snacks, and I think you will too.

Before moving on to making the truffles, first you need to make sugar cookies. Any sugar cookie recipe will do, but if you don’t have one, here’s one you can use.

SUGAR COOKIE RECIPE: • 3/4 cup softened butter • 1 cup sugar • 2 eggs • 1 tsp. vanilla • 3 cups sifted flour (I added another ¼ cup because it wasn’t thick enough) • 1 tsp. baking soda • 1 tsp. baking powder • 1 tsp. salt INSTRUCTIONS: • Cream the eggs, butter, sugar and vanilla.

• Add the rest of the ingredients.

• Mix until you have a nice thick dough.

• Place dough in freezer for 5-10 minutes.

• Sprinkle your countertops with flour, so the cookies aren’t as sticky.

• Roll out dough, and cut out cookies (the truffle recipe suggests that you make smaller cookies, about 2 inches in diameter).

• Place on sheet (make sure they are spaced out and the pan has been sprayed).

• Bake at 375 for 6-8 minutes.

• Let them cool before removing.

After you have your sugar cookies made, it’s time to get going on your truffles.

TRUFFLE RECIPE: • 12 sugar cookies (about 2 inches in diameter) • 5 tablespoons cream cheese at room temperature (you may need to add extra to get the right consistency for rolling them into balls) • 2 cups white chocolate for melting • Sprinkles for decoration INSTRUCTIONS: • Place your cookies in a food processor (I used my Ninja Blender) and blend/process until the cookies are fine crumbs.

• Add the cream cheese and process/ blend again until you have a well

combined mixture that you will be able to roll into balls. This should take about 1-2 minutes.

• If your mixture isn’t firm enough, add another tablespoon of cream cheese.

• Roll your mixture into balls about 1 inch in diameter.

• Place the cookies balls on a cookie sheet and put in the refrigerator (1 hour) or in the freezer (15 minutes).

• While waiting, melt your white chocolate that will become the coating of the truffles in the microwave.

• Put all your chocolate in a microwavable bowl and start for 1-1:30 minutes.

• After the first minute or so, stop the microwave every 20-30 second to stir the melting chocolate so it doesn’t burn.

• Once that’s done, take the truffles out of the refrigerator/freezer and dip them in the melted white chocolate.

• Place the truffles on a cookie sheet and immediately top with sprinkles (repeat process).

• Store them in the fridge in an airtight container.

• Enjoy!

11 5K supports suicide awareness, prevention The

The Alive and Running Suicide Prevention 5K run/ walk is on Saturday, June 17 at 7:30 a.m. in Dunkerton.

The evening before, June 16, from 3-8 p.m., they will hold a Dove Balloon Release Ceremony. This is an event where they bring in a guest speaker who has been impacted by suicide and have a reading of the names of loved ones lost to suicide.

The balloon release is in memory of loved ones lost to suicide.

The reason for the 5K is to raise awareness for suicide prevention. Suicide impacts or has impacted far too many people and is known to have a negative stigma attached to it, so the event was put together by a group of friends after they lost a friend to suicide.

Andrea Frana, the wife of a police officer who took his life back in 2014, said, “This

The emergence of the line has been a long time coming and features three young stars that are poised to soon take over the league.

The only thing that is more important than a great front line that can score at will is a solid tender that can stop at will. As a Detroit Red Wings fan, hearing the name Pekka Rinne fills my insides with frustration. From the years playing the Preds in the Western Conference playoffs and getting shot down time after time has built up my hatred for Pekka, but I will say his mindset and will between the pipes has led the Predators to where they are now. With his only shaky start being in game two, Pekka’s brilliance is the reason Nashville is where it’s at now.

Nashville is starting to come together as a Western powerhouse, but the only thing standing in its path is the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks are a playoff veteran team. The past decade they’ve had to watch themselves rise and fall after winning the cup in ’06, struggle to make it into the playoffs and then watch their arch rivals the LA Kings win it a couple times themselves.

After a couple seasons of

turmoil and heartbreak, The Ducks were able to add Ryan Kesler a few years ago in the offseason, and his ability to get under opponents’ skins has been his most valuable asset to the team. Pestering and prodding Ryan Johansen was the key element to shutting down the JOFA line and propelling their way to a 5-3 in game two.

From elbows to the dome and punches to the groin, Kesler was able to control Johansen using intimidation and anger to his advantage.

It is something that was sought after in old time hockey, but not as useful anymore.

If the league can put a stop to this, or not, it will be interesting to watch and may very well be a game changer.

The other key component to the Ducks finally moving on to the finals is goalie John Gibson. A lesser known goalie in the league, Gibson’s mediocre performance in the net through the playoffs thus far has been the difference maker.

After a solid outing in game two, the good Gibson will be needed the rest of the way.

He was prescribed medication, which had been adjusted during that short time.

The doctor then took him off of the medication completely, a few days before he took his life.

He began struggling with depression in late June of 2014. He ended his life on Sept. 19, 2014.

Frana said many people who are benefited by events

like this. “I believe that one of the things people will take away from this event is that they are not alone. There is more to ‘your story.’ Whether you are a person who lost someone to suicide or someone who is struggling and feel suicide is the only way out, you will learn something positive from this event. This events brings people together on one common ground.

After attending one of these events, someone might even take the extra time to speak to someone they think might be struggling with something. That extra time may save someone’s life by just talking with them for a bit.”

so far has been a surprise to many, and not a lot are aware of the potential within the team.

The Sens, like the Preds, have a great young defenseman, a great goaltender, and a good production line. Erik Karlsson is one of the premier offensive defensemen in the game. Karlsson led the team and points during the regular season and is currently doing so during the playoffs as well.

The Norris Trophy winner runs the point as well as any defender in the league, and his puck movement is what makes his play so versatile.

The Sens don’t have a Sidney Crosby or Phil Kessel on their team, but the lack of superpower is what allows for them to be one team, woven together with great chemistry and underlooked by their opponent.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Penguins are led by superstars. The defending champs have a great offensive front with Crosby, Kessel and Malkin among others. Their only problem going ahead is the lack of a great defense.

Kris Letang isn’t what he used to be, and Marc-Andre Fleury in my eyes doesn’t deserve the starting spot. He’s a washed up goalie who is somehow playing over a struggling Matt Murray. Even though the

young goalie is struggling, if the Sens play their cards right, they can tear apart Fleury.

Bad goaltending and mediocre defense aside, the Penguins can go back to back based on their great offense.

The skill level off the faceoff is what has gotten the Pens to where they are today, and should keep them going a little while longer. If the Penguins start to get hot, it will not be easy for Ottawa to keep up.

Sports Opinion: Preds will face Pens for NHL Cup

Thus far in the playoffs has been an interesting, none-theless crazy ride to the Stanley Cup Final. There have been rounds filled with four plus overtime games in each series, a familiar face in the finals knocked out in the first round, a familiar face getting knocked out before the conference finals, amongst many gregarious storylines that have peaked the interest of fans around the league. Even Charles Barkley has stated that the NHL playoffs have been much more intriguing than that of the NBA. The conference finals began last Friday and have slowly moved along toward the final seven games of the season.

Nashville, Anaheim, Pittsburgh and Ottawa are the last teams remaining. I will pick the teams to move on to the Stanley Cup and who will win the last game of the season.

Western Conference

The Nashville Predators have surpassed all expectations so far. No one thought they could beat the Chicago Blackhawks, and no one even imagined them sweeping. The mighty St. Louis Blues came up next, but P.K. Subban and company were able to hold back the arch madness and win the series modestly, 4-2.

The Predators, like every great team to win the cup, have a stellar line combination.

Eastern Conference

After handing the Capitals another summer of wondering if they’ll ever make it past the semifinals, the Pittsburgh Penguins have another tough job ahead of them. The Ottawa Senators making it through

First off, the West. I like the Ducks offensive power and determination to win at all costs, but Nashville is too hot right now. Coming off their first trip to the conference finals, I don’t see how the Predators can be torn down by any team. If they continue to play like this, nobody will be able to beat them.

The East is a little more complicated than that. The Sens are a team that can take anyone by surprise, and I don’t think that the Penguins are taking them all too seriously. If anyone can knock off the Penguins, it would be the Senators, but I don’t see that happening. The Penguins are just too good.

Both the Preds and Pens win in six games to advance to the Cup final.

Senior runner finishes strong, Holmes claims metro titles, ‘freaky’ run in sports, academics Peet finishes close seconds Senior Sam Schillinger is a star cross country and track and field runner with a 4.07 GPA. He will be attending the University of Arkansas.

“I’m absolutely excited to start this new chapter of my life.

I’m most excited for the new atmosphere and new opportunities that college presents,” Schillinger said.

Schillinger will be studying different practices with the Razorbacks while he is running track and and cross country.

Schillinger has had a blast in high school and sums up his years with these three words: “Unleash your freak.” You could say he has unleashed his freak on the track and in school.

Although Schillinger has been an excellent student/athlete in high school, he knows that college brings more challenges to an individual.

“I’m super excited. It’s going to be a wild ride, but I’m in it for the long haul, and I’m excited to be pushed and challenged in this new environment both academically and athletically,” he said.

“Academically, I am still undecided about my potential major, but I am interested in pursuing a degree in law, forensics or premed, or some combination of all three. Athletically, I will be on the cross-country and track and field team for the Razorbacks.

Academically, it started with parents always getting on me that my grades mattered, and that I was a student first and athlete second. That was reinforced by the effective teachers that I had at the high school, and also my studious peers that shared that

same motivation to succeed in the classroom. Athletically, what started with my dad being passionate about my running translated into my coaches — Becker, Hartman and Homewood — pushing me to compete at the highest level as much as they could. Woo Pig,” Schillinger said.

The best support for him is his family. The never let him down, and they push him to be more successful.

“My parents and sisters have supported me enormously, and that has been a huge help throughout my high school career.

I can’t say enough about the support I have received from my family,” he said. “Through this whole process, they have been there for me whenever I needed it. They have listened, talked through things with me, gave advice and just let me vent to them. My family has counseled me through this big decision and helped me make the best decision. They have helped me feel confident about the choices I have made.”

Schillinger said high school can be a great experience or a bad experience. It just depends on which attitude you choose to have. Schillinger was very involved, not just with clubs or sports, but people he would see around.

“My favorite part about high school has been meeting people and forming relationships with people that are different than me on many levels. The wide range of interesting people that I have met has been so fun and inspiring and I will never forget those relationships,” Schillinger said.

Sophomore Marika Yang first started lacrosse while living in Chicago after her friends convinced her to attend an introductory clinic. She instantly fell in love with the sport and joined her local team soon after.

However, things changed for Yang when she found out that her family would be moving to Iowa later that year.

“I went searching for a team that I could play for in Iowa and was disappointed to find out that the school I would be attending in Cedar Falls did not have one. I kept looking and found a women’s club team in West Des Moines, also known as the Tigers. I joined and have been practicing with them ever since,” Yang said.

While Yang said she enjoys

playing on her club team, she said she hopes to eventually establish a local team at the high school.

“Starting a team at CF is my ultimate goal right now. I am determined to make it happen and will keep working for it to be a success,” she said. “There are and will be some bumps in the road, but nothing that will stop me from doing my best to bring this amazing new sport to Cedar Falls.”

Yang’s plan to start a lacrosse team centers mostly around educating the students about the sport as a whole.

“My plans to recruit players at the high school involve a lot of clinics. I would like to set up specific days where girls can just come out and grab a stick and see what they think. No pressure, just

Cedar Falls hosted the metro track meet on Saturday, May 13 for seventh and eighth grade boys and girls. Holmes, Peet, Carver, Hoover, Bunger, Central and Waterloo Christian all attend for the last meet of the season.

These schools have competed against each other all year, but the metro meet decided it all. The seventh grade boys from Holmes won easily, winning the meet by 80 points. The eighth grade boys from Holmes overcame some injuries but also won by 7 points. Peet was runner-up for both grades.

Both seventh and eighth grade teams were undefeated this year. The shuttle hurdle team broke a record of 1:09.12, which was set in 2012, and the 4x200 broke a record of 1:48.13 set in 1998. Individuals who broke records were Ryan Ostrich and Owen Ausborn. Ostrich set the 200 hurdle record with a time of 27.17, and Ausborn broke the 10 flight hurdle record with a time of 15.08.

Head Coach Dan List said he feels that his teams will have success in high school. “Our staff feels there is a good nucleus of talent heading up to the high school next year, and combine that with the group from Peet, there should be an outstanding group of tracksters. Plus, there is a lot of talent that are freshmen that are from last year’s Metro champions that are having a very successful year,” List said.

The older group was able to create leadership to help contribute to winning metro for the sixth time in a row. “We had a lot of leaders. In fact, this class as a

With the increase in competition this year, the coaches had more a responsibility to put the right kids in the right events. “We try and put the kids in positions and events that they can be successful at and also help the team accumulate points toward the team championship,” he said.

The eighth grade boys have won Metro four years in a row, and the seventh grade boys have won six years in a row. Both grades have won it nine out of the last 15 years.

Despite bad weather, they were able to still manage to work hard and get better indoors. “The surprise that we found were how many meets had bad weather.

Either wind, rain, cold or a combination of them,” List said. “That was until Metro. That was an absolute perfect day for a meet.

The seventh grade group surprised us how talented they were.

We knew we had some good athletes out from participation in earlier sports, but they were very deep, and they worked very hard.

A lot of that can be attributed to the work ethic of the eighth graders and the leadership and direction of Coach Peters and Coach Ward. It is very difficult to sort out who belongs in what event with 90+ kids out and only three coaches, but with the great attitude and work ethic of the kids, we ended up having a very successful year.”

Sophomore exploring options for CF lacrosse a chance to learn a little bit about the sport and if they think that they would like it. Spreading the word by mouth is also how I’ve been gaining a lot of interest at the moment. I hope that when girls step out of their comfort zone and just toss the ball, they’ll love it just as much as I do,” Yang said.

Even if she can’t start a lacrosse team, Yang said she still hopes to spread awareness about the sport.

“I believe that lacrosse receives a lot of good recognition in most other states when it comes to being a sport; however, Iowa is definitely lacking this due to the low number of teams. Most people that I have talked to in Iowa have never heard about lacrosse or what it entails, so one of my goals is to change that,” Yang

said.

Her passion for lacrosse has not only allowed her to meet new people, but it has pushed her out of her comfort zone.

“My favorite thing about being in lacrosse is the excitement that comes along with playing and the truly fun nature of the sport,” Yang said. “It’s such a unique game that not a lot of people get to experience, and I want to change that.

I think that lacrosse is a blast and that everyone should be able to try it and love it if they want to.”

Athlete of The Week

Allison Zerkie Soccer

Senior Allison Zerkie has played soccer for 13 years.

Using her experience, she has led the women’s soccer team in countless victories.

She plans on continuing her soccer career on the UNI club team next spring.

What are you looking forward to this season?

I’m looking forward to finishing my favorite sport with my favorite people and hopefully getting to State this year.

What are your personal goals?

A personal goal of mine is to leave all I have out on the field every single game and have nothing left to give at the end.

What are some team goals?

Our team goals include being focused from minute one. We are also very excited for substate because it is our chance to qualify for State.

Favorite moment?

My favorite memory from this season would have to be beating Dubuque Hempstead. It was the first time in five years, and it was a huge accomplishment for us.
