Shake it for a cause
Students prepare games, music for second CFHS dance marathon It’s that time again where students can all help out while having a great time. The dance marathon is just around the corner. This year it will be on Friday, Feb. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the high school gym. Tickets will go on sale this week for $7 in advance or for $10 at the door. There are also pledge sheets in the main office, and anyone who raises $30 or more in pledges will get a free ticket. There will also be dance marathon Tshirts for sale for $10 in the main office. The marathon includes many different activities this year. There will be a dodgeball tournament and people are able to sign up for teams up to eight people in the main office. There will also be Twister games, dancing and a casino room. Every half hour there will be a power half hour where everyone comes together and dances as a group. A variety of prizes will be up for
grabs, including gift-cards from places like Doughy Joey's, Pancheros, Panera Bread, Yogurt Pro and other places around the community. This dance marathon is put together by student senate and the other leadership groups, and this year they have also decided to adopt a little boy. The adoption is more like a sponsorship for a young boy named Jud Corkery who has an eye condition and epilepsy and is treated at the Iowa Children's Hospital in Iowa City. Corkery will be turning four years old on Feb. 15, so there will be a birthday celebration for him during the dance marathon. “The dance marathon is a great way to contribute to kids who are in need, paying money to help them and at the same time having fun,” counselor Erin Gardner said. However, it isn’t just for fun. It’s also a good cause. All the money raised goes to the Iowa Children’s Hospital. There are many things that the hospital does with the money like provide the
children with toys, bikes, equipment, games, snacks, books and other things that help brighten stay of the children who are there for longer. Of course, the money raised also goes to research in the hospital. This is Cedar Falls High School’s second year hosting this dance marathon, and this year UNI will be helping; there will be about 20 UNI students coming to assist. Last year, the high school raised about $2,955, and this year the goal is to exceed last year. “Waterloo West also had a dance marathon this year and raised $4,000. It would be great if we could outdo them because we’re in competition with them,” Gardner said. The University of Iowa students recently raised over $1.53 million for the cause, which was a new record. By Feature Editor Sandra
