Introduction

Foreword At H+H UK safety will always be our number one priority; this includes the safety of our Trusted Partners R.T. Keedwell and our own H+H staff.

In 2019 we successfully eliminated the need for any driver to be on the bed of a trailer. Since then, the commitment of both R T Keedwell and H+H staff has won us the ‘Best Health & Safety in Manufacturing’ category at the prestigious SHE Awards 2021.

As market leader, our customers demand the highest standards and continue to rely on us to ensure our high-quality materials are delivered on site, to the right place, at the right time and above all, safely.

Introduction

Overview This handbook provides the current delivery drivers guide to the safe system of work. Produced by the project team with guidance from the relevant government department.

The loading and strapping plans highlighted in pages 6 to 14 have been developed to eliminate working at height and will result in a significant reduction in the risk to the delivery driver at the point of loading/unloading.

All configurations have been rigorously tested and trialed both on the road and at loading/unloading points.

This handbook is to be kept in your vehicle at all times as reference guide in the event of a DVSA roadside check. You should familiarise yourself with the loading and strapping plans to ensure that your load is correct before you leave an H+H site.

The relevant safe systems of work will be available in your drivers handbook.

On-site safety

H+H Site rules PPE – MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES Hard hat, hi-vis vest, jacket, long trousers (no shorts) Safety glasses, safety shoes, chin straps for all hauliers

DO’S Immediately report to the yard office upon arrival Ensure you are familiar with the site and the layout (if required, map to be provided) Follow all instructions and the traffic routes as indicated by yard personnel and signage Always have the mandatory PPE with you (must always be worn when in the yard) Always give way to pedestrians and be aware of the designated walkways Always be aware of your surroundings and other vehicles

DON’TS Exceed the site speed limit Wear shorts on site Stop or reverse park on any walkway/hazard lines Leave the vehicle unattended Wander around the site Leave the engine running while being loaded Bring children under 16 or pets on to site Use H+H facilities without prior permission (i.e. showers, canteen etc.)

Report all near misses or incidents to yard personnel

Conduct any truck repairs on site without seeking authorisation from the Yard Manager/ HSQE Manager

Only work in your designated work area

Use your mobile phone whilst in the vehicle

Always abide by the company SSOW and the site SSOW Be courteous to other drivers and H+H employees

On-site safety

Load configurations The following 33 configurations have been agreed with the Transport Policy Advisor at the HSE, to establish the balance between loading and on the road risk.

It is important to note that the black packs highlighted in the diagrams have been turned through 90 degrees and butted together. There will still be a sufficient gap for crane offload along the length of the load.

To ensure that these configurations are acceptable to the HSE, Any top level packs that are not secured against the headboard, must have a minimum of 2 straps. This will effectively make a temporary bulkhead.

The diagrams outline the strapping and pack configurations, but also indicate the number of packs per load.

You must always ensure that your load is secure and that the load weight does not exceed the legal limit for your vehicle. Both H+H sites have weigh bridges available and must be used at all times.

Loading and transporting H+H products LOADING – ARRIVAL ON H+H UK LTD SITES 1

IMPORTANT - DO NOT ARRIVE ON SITE BEFORE PERMITTED TIMES. ENSURE YOU ADHERE TO LOCAL RESTRICTIONS/AGREEMENTS WHEN TRAVELLING TO FACTORY SITES.

Drivers arriving at a H+H sites must have completed the Haulier / H+H Induction and have in their possession a copy of the “Drivers Safety Instruction Manual”.

The “Drivers Safety Instruction Manual” contains the load configurations and minimum strapping requirements - it also contains the site rules for Pollington and Borough Green, these rules MUST be followed at all times on site - No exceptions - any failure will be considered a violation.

Drivers arriving on site who have not been inducted must report to the site office for induction.

Sub Contractor companies will have been supplied with an electronic copy of the “Driver Safety Instruction Booklet” that they will issue to their drivers.

This sheet carries a summary of all critical safety information.

Critical safety rules include - NO PARKING ON OR REVERSING OVER WALKWAYS AND NO SMOKING ON ANY H+H SITE OR IN YOUR PARKED VEHICLE AT ANY TIME INCLUDING ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES.

Loading and transporting H+H products LOADING – LOAD PREPARATION 1

Drivers will be informed of the area of the site they must go to for loading.

Wait for the clamp truck or fork truck driver and follow their instructions at all times.

The loaders will communicate the load configuration and inform the driver of any truck or trailer preparation requirements. The driver will then prepare the trailer for loading.

Driver Segregation - Drivers when operating as pedestrians must be aware of truck and mobile plant movements at all times. Mobile plant clamps and FLT’s have a “rear end swing” when reversing and drivers must always establish”confirmed eye contact” with any truck driver in the area (make sure they are aware of you). Laying out pallets is part of load preparation when loading is taking place drivers must remain in their cabs - A 5 Metre exclusion area around each clamp and FLT must be maintained.

Follow your training on Manual Handling technique at all times when lifting, pulling curtains, handling straps or pallets and climbing in and out of your vehicles (Look before you get down / 3 points of contact at all times / Plant your landing foot before you release your hand grips).

On completing the preparation get into your cab and wait for the loader to come back - do not wander around the site.

Check that the straps you are to use are in good condition - frayed or damaged straps cannot be used, your company will supply replacements.

Drivers must bear in mind that all loads will be checked prior to being allowed to leave site - Load placement, strapping, weighbridge ticket and the condition of the straps.

Loading and transporting H+H products LOADING – DRIVER SAFETY DURING LOADING 1

During the loading of blocks either by clamp or FLT, the driver must remain in his cab or safe area as specified by the loaders.

Drivers are not permitted to be near or under any suspended loads.

If the loader requires the assistance of the driver at any stage of loading, the loading must cease and the driver is permitted to leave the safety area or cab to assist. The loader remains in control of the operation.

Where the loader requires the driver to position pallets for loading this must be completed from ground level, either locating the pallets on the ground or on the bed of the trailer. The driver must work closely in conjunction with the loader to ensure a safe distance between truck and driver - this is part of load preparation - ALL TIMES OF LOADING - THE DRIVER MUST REMAIN INSIDE THE CAB.

The driver may be required to use his crane to position or load some packs this is permitted.

Drivers required to access crane driving seats are permitted to do so and must:a) Ensure that their height access equipment fitted to the truck and crane are properly constructed and well maintained. b) Follow their SSOW for accessing work areas at height, maintain 3 points of contact at all times and carefully plant their landing foot when getting down.

On completion of the assistance the driver must then retire to the safe area or cab.

Any request to work at height must be “dynamically assessed” - call your depot manager or driver trainer.

The loading pattern will always specify 2 straps on any front pallet above the headboard - this is to create an artificial bulkhead where the headboard does not protect from forward movement.

All loads must be adequately strapped. Ensure you have the minimum number of straps to secure the load.

Before throwing straps over the load you must ensure that there are no pedestrians on the far side.

Use good manual handling technique at all times (as per training), and roll up the straps to reduce the effort needed to get the strap over the load.

Strap ratchets go on the nearside of the vehicle to reduce the risk from passing traffic off site.

The load configurations have minimum strapping patterns applied.

Where a single pack is loaded in the middle of the trailer you must use two straps.

Loading and transporting H+H products USE OF THE WEIGHBRIDGE 1

Before leaving site the load must be taken across the dynamic weighbridge and both the overall weight and axle weights checked. Any failure must be rectified before leaving site.

You will be asked to show your weighbridge slip before leaving site.

LOAD STABILITY IN TRANSIT 1

A final check of strap tension must take place before taking the vehicle onto the road.

Any harsh or emergency manoeuvres en route from H+H to the customer location must be followed with an inspection of the load by the driver at the first safe opportunity. In the event that a load moves in transit, re-secure your load and contact your depot immediately.

Loading and transporting H+H products DELIVERY SITE UNLOADING 1

Report to Site Agent - Construction sites have very specific safety requirements - Establish the site rules on arrival and abide by them at all times. Ensure you have the correct PPE at all times.

Do not access the trailer bed without height access and fall protection equipment. If you have any doubts call your depot manager or driver trainer.

On arrival check all crane and trailer equipment is in working order - any defects must be reported to the depot manager immediately.

Inspect the load and ensure that it is in a safe condition to unload.

Deliver on hard standing.

6

Ensure that the area around the vehicle is clear of site staff and the public.

7

Use stabilisers where fitted, or wind down trailer legs for extra support.

8

Remove strapping from load and stow next to headboard.

9

Check for overhead cables - electricity from high voltage cables can ‘jump’.

10

DO NOT STACK blocks more than 2 pallets high unless site agent signs your ticket to accept all responsibility.

11 NEVER unload blocks onto scaffolding.

Keep constant watch for faulty hoses or seals. Leaks should be immediately treated using spill kits. Contaminated pads must be disposed of as 12 hazardous waste on return to depot, and deposited in designated containers - ensure spill kit is replenished.

13 NEVER move the vehicle with the crane in the air.

14 NEVER allow anyone to walk or stand under or near to a suspended load.
