A message of appreciation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has tested our mettle as an institution and as individuals. In the midst of so much uncertainty, though, Huntington Hospital has remained a beacon of hope and healing for our community.

As cases rose, we continued to be a resource for essential care for our region, and to support our caregivers, staff and patients — all thanks to the outpouring of support from our community. Philanthropic friends donated more than $1 million to our COVID-19 Response Fund, and provided thousands of pieces of personal protective equipment. Your contributions also helped us purchase much-needed medical equipment and add more patient beds.

In this issue of Advocate, we are pleased to share some remarkable stories of what we have experienced and accomplished in recent months, in response to COVID-19. Every single one of our accomplishments has been made possible as a result of our enduring partnership with our community, and we are grateful.

From all of us at the hospital, thank you for your compassionate, impactful contributions as we continue to respond to this health crisis. I encourage you all to remain safe and to continue following health guidelines. Rest assured that Huntington Hospital is ready to provide the very best of care for our region — during times of crisis and times of calm.

Stronger together. A message from infectious disease specialist Kimberly Shriner,

In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, everyone at Huntington Hospital worked quickly to adapt and to meet the unexpected and unprecedented challenge.

Our caregivers and staff have exemplified compassion in action during this crisis. We are grateful to each of them, and to the many community members like you who have shown your appreciation for our work. Your care and concern, demonstrated in many ways, help keep us strong. Together, we will continue to fight this virus.

In the following pages, we profile some of the generous donors who have supported our pandemic response, and some of the healthcare heroes who have come together to serve our community with unquestioning selflessness. We also share stories about just a few of the patients who have received world-class care here during the COVID-19 pandemic. Contributions from special friends like you make this care possible.

Today, we continue to do all we can to ensure the safety of our community. Please remain vigilant and take all precautions. If you go out, wear a mask and maintain physical distance. On behalf of everyone at Huntington Hospital, and of all those we serve, thank you. We hope you enjoy reading this issue of Advocate and learning more about the ways your giving matters during these challenging times.

Dr. Shriner is board certified in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious disease and has been in practice for more than 30 years. She received her medical degree from Case Western Reserve. She completed her internship and residency at Huntington Hospital and fellowship at UCLA. Dr. Shriner returned to Huntington Hospital to serve our community as an infectious disease specialist and has made the hospital her medical home ever since.

2 Responding to COVID-19 together.

COVID-19 Your gifts help us rise to the challenge.

From the very outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Huntington Hospital responded without delay to save lives and protect our community. As we did so, we were helped by local friends, who also stepped up to the plate at this time of immense need: More than 1,000 supporters have contributed to our special COVID-19 Response Fund, and more than 300 individuals and community partners have donated personal protective equipment and other essential items to help us in this fight.

Generous monetary and in-kind gifts continue to allow us to treat critically ill patients, protect our caregivers with the equipment they need and support our community’s health. Many thanks to the thoughtful friends who are making a difference.

Panda Cares

Stepping up in a crisis.

4 Responding to COVID-19 together.

Our founders, Andrew and Peggy Cherng, have a long-standing relationship with Huntington Hospital,” says Winnie Chan, director of Panda Charitable Foundation at Panda Restaurant Group. In fact, the Cherngs’ involvement in our work goes back two decades. The couple have made generous personal contributions, and Panda Cares (the philanthropic arm of Panda Express) has also provided outstanding support.

The Cherngs have a special focus on pediatric and emergency care services. We are also deeply grateful for a recent contribution of personal protective equipment (PPE), made through Panda Cares’ COVID-19 Community Care Fund.

“Huntington Hospital is such an important institution in the San Gabriel Valley,” Winnie says, “and we highly respect the work the hospital staff and leaders do for our shared community. Panda Cares was created to support our community’s needs,” she adds, “and we shift focus from health and education of underserved youth to relief efforts, when natural disasters or crises occur.”

With the onset of the current pandemic, Panda Cares created its COVID-19 Community Care Fund — donating more than 5 million pieces of PPE to local hospitals and delivering more than 60,000 meals for healthcare workers, to date.

Panda Cares and the Cherngs have also donated $6.45 million to support research related to treating patients infected with the virus and to nonprofits that help families who are experiencing food insecurity. To expand their impact still further, Andrew and Peggy Cherng provided a personal matching grant, and Panda Express restaurants have also invited their customers to contribute to the fund.

The COVID-19 Community Care Fund, Winnie notes, is just one way to make a difference while saying ‘thank you’ to healthcare workers, including those at Huntington Hospital.

“The whole Panda family,” she says, “is deeply grateful for the long hours, care and compassion these caregivers demonstrate every day to save lives and protect all of us. Their grit and resilience inspire all of us to do what we can do to provide for our community. We are stronger together.”

Michael Luu, MD, knows what it takes to deliver quality care. The cardiologist, who has been a member of Huntington Hospital’s medical staff for 29 years, underscores the hospital’s high commitment to patient safety and outcomes, as well as great communication among caregivers and administrators, as among the important factors.

6 Responding to COVID-19 together.
Advocate. Winter 2021 7

When COVID-19 struck, Dr. Luu notes, the safety of patients and of caregivers themselves could have been jeopardized: “I saw how healthcare providers nationwide were having difficulty finding masks and other protective equipment,” he explains, “and I suspected Huntington Hospital would also face challenges.” He and his wife, Janel, stepped up to help.

“Janel and I wanted to do as much as we possibly could to keep patients, staff and community safe,” he says. He quickly got on the phone.

Over and above his busy clinical schedule, Dr. Luu spent time talking to friends and colleagues. He described the need for protective surgical masks, and for contributions to help purchase them. His extraordinary efforts were successful and, with generous support from those he contacted, Dr. Luu was able to procure 150,000 level-3 surgical masks, which he immediately passed on to us. We are extremely grateful to each of the donors — listed at right — who made this possible.

In addition, the Luus themselves purchased and donated an additional 30,000 level-3 masks. “As part of the medical staff,” he says, “I wanted to help my community and co -workers however I could. Making a personal contribution is one way we can do that.”

Level-3 masks offer a high level of filtration and fluid resistance thanks to a multi-layer construction. While known as surgical masks, they are also used in non-surgical settings to prevent the spread of infection. Because they are meant for single use only, the need for them is high.

“Huntington Hospital has been good to me,” Dr. Luu says. “It’s the place I practice medicine. My children were born here. Whenever any of us need care, we come here first. So when there was a need for masks, we saw it as an opportunity to give back.”

Thank you.

Many thanks to the thoughtful donors who provided support toward vital protective equipment, through Dr. Luu’s fundraising efforts:

8 Responding to COVID-19 together.

Your support during the pandemic has helped us:

1. Keep our caregivers and staff safe. You’ve helped bring personal protective equipment to our staff on the front lines of the pandemic. Thank you for helping us purchase face shields, masks, gloves and other supplies.

2. Treat critically ill patients. The virus affects the respiratory system. Ventilators are critical to help very sick patients who can’t breathe effectively on their own. We’re grateful for gifts like yours, which have helped us purchase additional ventilators.

3. Offer COVID-19 testing in the community. In collaboration with the City of Pasadena and the County of Los Angeles, we outstationed caregivers at the Rose Bowl, administering COVID-19 tests to thousands of community members. We were able to take this important step in tracking the virus — and improving local awareness and safety — because of you. Thank you!

4. Be prepared. To prepare for a surge in cases, we increased our bed capacity by 50 percent. Your support helped us convert more than 300 beds for use in treating COVID-19 patients as needed.

5. Get patients the care they need. Ramping up our response to the coronavirus pandemic severely stretched our financial resources. At the same time, cancellation of elective procedures temporarily eliminated a significant funding stream. Despite this, with your help, we’ve been able to serve every patient who needed immediate care, throughout this time of crisis.

Members of the Pasadena Area Respiratory Health Foundation’s board of directors are, from left, Dennis Slattery, Richard Ward, Betty Ho and Reyneiro Castro, MD. The foundation, a longtime contributor to the hospital, recently provided support through our COVID-19 Response Fund.

Pasadena Area Respiratory Health Foundation

Helpingbreathepatientseasier.

Pasadena Area Respiratory Health Foundation has a long history of partnership with Huntington Hospital — generously supporting our work since 1995. When the pandemic reached our community, the foundation stepped up again, with contributions to our COVID-19 Response Fund.

Aware of the great need, Dennis Slattery, president of the foundation’s board of directors, says, “The hospital seemed to us the obvious organization to support. We know from experience that it has the resources, staff and knowledge to put our funds to good use.”

The health of our community has been important to the foundation since it was created in 1929. Originally known as the Pasadena Lung Association, it has since changed its name. Initially a private charitable foundation, it also transitioned to become a donor-advised fund — but while the foundation has evolved over time, its core focus remains the same: protecting the respiratory health of local community members. Serving with Dennis on the foundation’s board are Betty Ho, Richard Ward and Reyneiro Castro, MD.

Of the foundation’s giving to the hospital, “We see it as a win-win,” says Dennis. “Our dollars go toward their intended purpose and the hospital can put those dollars to good use. The people who work there have the knowledge to do that,” he adds. In particular, in the current pandemic, he extends “A heartfelt thanks to all the caregivers who were there when the need arose. We are forever in your debt.”

Your giving saves lives.

When COVID-19 affected our region, Huntington Hospital was faced with the unprecedented challenges of a global health emergency. Our community quickly stepped up in a big way to help us. Generous philanthropic gifts to our COVID-19 Response Fund have enabled us to treat patients with the virus and help keep our community as safe and healthy as possible.

In the early stages of the pandemic, OB-GYN Joseph Li, MD, was diagnosed with COVID-19. After having a fever for a few days, he began coughing. Then, feeling worse, he came to our emergency department for care. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Li is a member of our medical staff, but he did not contract the virus at the hospital. He did, however, become one of the first COVID-19 patients admitted for inpatient care here.

His condition became very grave, and he was placed on a ventilator. “He was very sick,” says Harry Bowles, MD, chief of medical staff. “I think people were quite concerned he might not make it, and that would have been devastating.”

Thanks to the expert care provided by Steven Pavkovic, MD, along with other Huntington Hospital caregivers, including infectious disease specialist Kimberly Shriner, MD, Dr. Li pulled through and is now fully recovered. “If I say I owe my life to Huntington Hospital,” he says, “that’s understating the kind of care I received. I thank all the people who took care of me; thank you for bringing me back.”

“It’s super-important for everybody to remember that this is a very, very serious disease,” says Dr. Shriner. “It’s great to know that local donors are right here with us,” she adds, “helping to bring the best of care to every patient with this virus.”

Going above and beyond during the pandemic.

Generous local philanthropists have helped us expand our work in important ways, to meet the unique challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are just a few examples.

Testing in the community.

In collaboration with the City of Pasadena and the County of Los Angeles, our caregivers administered COVID-19 tests to members of our community at the Rose Bowl. A drive-through model allowed us to test as many residents as possible, while maintaining social distancing and safety.

Supporting first responders.

We provided free COVID-19 antibody testing to our frontline caregivers, as well as to members of the Pasadena Fire Department and Pasadena Police Department. Testing not only increases safety and peace of mind; it could also expand our arsenal in the fight against COVID-19: We encourage those with antibodies to donate blood plasma, which may help patients who are seriously ill with the virus.

Care for those in need.

Huntington Hospital Ambulatory Care Center (HACC) is a full-service medical clinic, located on our campus. It provides a broad array of primary and specialty care for local residents who lack alternative resources. To ensure continued access, HACC staff partnered with our medical and surgical residents to implement telehealth services for the center’s high-risk patients.

Prepared for any eventuality.

We increased our bed capacity by 50 percent. Together with the City of Pasadena, we also created a temporary medical facility at the Pasadena Convention Center. Huntington Hospital has a surge plan that we will activate, when needed, to ensure all beds at the hospital are available to care for the sickest patients. The hospital currently has surge tents outside our emergency department, which remain available as we monitor COVID-19 cases. If needed, the tents will be used for non-critical patients as overflow from our emergency department.

A lifeline for seniors.

Older adults can be hit especially hard by prolonged social isolation, with negative impacts on their overall health. In response, Huntington Senior Care Network (SCN) created their Senior CareLine. This free phone-based service matches seniors with a trained volunteer to chat with by phone from time to time to help them safely stay socially connected. If you’re interested in getting connected to this service, call SCN’s membership line at (626) 397-3147 or (800) 664-4664.

Catherine and Casey Adams Safeguarding our future.

The couple decided to show their gratitude for this work through a gift to the hospital, made through our COVID-19 Response Fund.

“There’s no greater use for these funds than to help those who are most affected by the pandemic,” says Casey. “That includes patients who are sick with the virus, and the healthcare workers who care for them.”

Casey and Catherine have long supported our work, first becoming involved through SCRUBS Giving Society in 2009 — the year their son, Henry, was born here. The connection to the hospital does not stop at that. The couple welcomed daughters Charlotte (born 2010) and Georgia (born 2012) into the world here, too. “Even before the kids were born,” says Catherine, “we had a strong connection with the hospital,” as other family members had received our care.

Catherine and Casey Adams appreciate Huntington Hospital staff members and their dedicated response to the COVID-19 pandemic. “People are dealing with so much this year,” says Casey, “but no one has dealt with as much as healthcare workers. The bravery of those who confront this highly contagious virus is truly inspiring to us.”

“Don’t wait until you’re in need to support the hospital, though,” Casey urges. “You’ll be happy you gave if you ever need care there— and you’ll help the less fortunate get the care they need.”

The couple wants to ensure exceptional care remains available for our community, long into the future.

“The only reason we have Huntington Hospital now,” Casey says, “is because of the generosity of the people who came before us. We need to carry that forward.

“The pandemic,” he adds, “is a once-in-a-lifetime event, but there are all kinds of things that can happen. I want to help keep this institution as good as it is now, for my kids and grandkids.”

Critical care unit nurses Rising to the challenge.

Our critical care unit team has been recognized by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) for their exceptional work. We have received the silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence in critical care, acknowledging ongoing improvements in patient outcomes and alignment with best practices.

Our critical care unit (CCU) delivers expert care to patients with potentially life-threatening medical conditions, including those with COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, this unit has played a vital role in treating our most seriously ill COVID-19 patients. It is staffed by healthcare professionals who are specially trained to meet patients’ intensive care needs. Donor support, including generous gifts to our COVID-19 Response Fund, helps ensure these professionals have everything they need to respond to the greatest medical challenges.

Patients in our CCU are impacted by traumatic injury, stroke, advanced heart disease, pneumonia or other extremely serious conditions that require fast, expert care. When the pandemic struck, the unit’s 115 staff members worked closely together to ensure they could continue serving these patients and, in addition, meet the needs of critically ill COVID-19 patients.

The team acted quickly. Partnering with our infection control experts, they crafted and implemented a plan that included expanding the CCU’s capacity. This and other prompt action has meant our CCU remains fully prepared for a surge in patient need due to the pandemic.

“They go to extraordinary lengths to bring the best of care to our patients and they have continued their work without pause during the pandemic,” says Nichole Ballweg, RN, CCRN, CCU nurse manager, of the team. “It’s hard for me to find the words for how brave and selfless this group of people is. They come in every day and suit up to do a very difficult job with a great attitude. We’re all in this together.”

Thank you to the nurses, aides, respiratory therapists, physicians and the entire interdisciplinary CCU team for their exceptional work, during the pandemic and always.

CAREGIVER SPOTLIGHT

Martha Williamson describes Huntington Hospital as the hospital of choice for her family. Through their philanthropy, she and her husband, Jon Andersen, are helping to safeguard world-class care for our community, here.

Martha Williamson and Jon Andersen

Trusted care, thoughtful giving.

Martha Williamson and her husband, Jon Andersen, trust Huntington Hospital when it matters most. Whether for major illness, surgical needs, or injury, “We’ve always gone there,” Martha says, “because we know they’ll take good care of us. It’s the best combination of a major medical center and a neighborhood hospital.”

20 Responding to COVID-19 together.
Advocate. Winter 2021 21

Grateful for exceptional care received, Martha and Jon have also been faithful donors for many years. “The hospital has always been here when we needed it,” Martha says, “and we want to be here for the hospital.”

After the virus hit, they wanted to do more — and increased their giving via a contribution to our COVID-19 Response Fund. “Especially now, we want to support the incredibly committed medical professionals who work at the hospital,” Martha says. “We believe it’s best to give to an organization that we know will manage our gift well and have a direct impact on our community.”

In addition to supporting the hospital through monetary donations, Martha is an enthusiastic supporter of our S. Robert and Denise Zeilstra Gift Shop. She particularly relies on it to buy special presents for friends and family at the holiday season, she notes.

Confidence in care.

Martha moved to Pasadena after completing college and notes that her own affection for the hospital goes back to her early time in the community: She became a patient after she was injured, falling out of a tree. With many family members working in the medical field and a daughter in medical school, she adds, she has grown to appreciate the importance of high-quality care even more fully over the years. “We’re thankful to have this world-class medical institution nearby,” she says.

A respected writer and producer, Martha currently works with CBS on a pilot for a new family drama. She also continues to produce other projects, including the Hallmark movie series “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” as well as writing and producing two feature films.

Needless to say, Martha’s demanding work schedule frequently results in heavy deadline pressures. Some years ago, while working on a project into the night, she began to feel something was wrong. Her symptoms were troubling enough that she was rushed to our emergency department. Our staff responded “in less than two minutes,” she recalls. Careful examination and a series of tests thankfully determined that she did not have a life-threatening condition, but that she was severely dehydrated and exhausted. With expert care from our team she was returned to good health promptly.

A life-threatening condition did bring Martha’s husband, Jon, to the hospital in the past. She speaks gratefully of the “immediate and skillful care” he received from Huntington Hospital Stroke Center, which is certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Giving to improve lives.

Martha and Jon’s daughters, Isabel and Abigail, have also both been patients at the hospital. Most recently, Martha brought Abigail — who just turned 18 — to our emergency department in the middle of the night. “She was in terrible pain,” Martha says, “and of course I was very worried — but because of the pandemic, I couldn’t go in with her. Watching her go in on her own was very hard,” Martha acknowledges, “but as I waited, I felt such comfort knowing she was getting the very best care and support at Huntington Hospital. That helped so much.”

As a result of such confidence, “We’ve never regretted a dollar we’ve given to Huntington Hospital,” Martha adds. “We know it will go toward changing someone’s life for the better.”

Responding
COVID-19 together.

Members of the Lau family are grateful for the expert, compassionate care that Shawn (far right) received here for a rare lung condition. Pictured with Shawn are (from left) sister Megan, and parents Johnnie and Marianne.

Your giving helps familieskeepsafe.

Our team of pediatric specialists — including pediatricians, pediatric nurses, respiratory therapists, a child-life specialist and pediatric general surgeons — provides exceptional, age-appropriate care to children of all ages. Donors also play an important role on the team: Your support allows us to deliver this high level of care for kids, during the pandemic and always.

When Shawn Lau said his chest was hurting when he breathed, his mom, Marianne, was worried — especially in light of the current pandemic. Tests revealed that the cause of the high school student’s discomfort was not COVID-19, but some abnormalities in his lungs. “The doctor told us we needed to go to the emergency department right away,” says Marianne. “It’s a good thing Huntington Hospital is so close.”

Shawn was diagnosed with spontaneous pneumothorax, a rare condition in which air builds up between the lungs and the chest cavity for no apparent reason, causing the collapse of a lung. Our team provided the treatment he needed, which involved inserting a tube to suction out excess air, allowing the affected lung to re-expand.

Shawn was then moved to our pediatric care unit. “The nurses explained all the COVID-19 pandemic precautions the hospital was taking,” says Marianne. “They made everything comfortable for us and we felt safe there.”

A few weeks later, after follow-up testing revealed renewed onset of spontaneous pneumothorax, Shawn returned to us for further treatment. This time, the initial procedure did not resolve the problem and our team treated him via minimally invasive surgery. “The experience was the best we could have asked for and Shawn has made a full recovery,” says Marianne.

Shawn began his sophomore year remotely, while recovering from surgery in our pediatric unit. “We are so grateful to the pediatric staff,” Marianne says. “They were very accommodating so he could still do his school work. Everyone at Huntington Hospital works together as a team,” she adds, “and it’s clear they love what they’re doing. We wouldn’t go anywhere else for care.”

They made everything comfortable for us and we felt safe.

Innovations in care.

Treating patients with COVID-19.

At Huntington Hospital, we continuously pursue improvements that positively impact patient outcomes. Our donors help make this possible. One of these generous community residents is Carole Greene, who recently established the Carole and Warren Greene Endowment for Medical Innovation here. Funds generated through the endowment will advance medical knowledge and strengthen care into the future. In 2020, endowment funds helped to identify the best therapies for patients hospitalized with COVID-19.

26 Responding to COVID-19 together.

Remdesivir.

Thanks to philanthropic contributions from friends like Carole, Huntington Hospital was able to participate in the U.S. Department of Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Expanded Access Program for remdesivir. With oversight from our infectious disease specialists, patients with COVID-19 who met specific clinical criteria received a 10-day course of the medication. Patient consent was required.

Expanded access, sometimes called “compassionate use,” allows patients with an immediately life-threatening or serious condition to gain access to a medical product or protocol that is still under investigation by the FDA. Though not part of a traditional clinical trial, expanded access can provide important information that advances the field. In the case of remdesivir, we reported results to the drug manufacturer for consolidation and reporting to the FDA. Our work played an important role in evaluating this therapy’s efficacy in treating patients with COVID-19.

Convalescent plasma.

When a patient has recovered from a viral disease such as COVID-19, their blood may contain helpful antibodies — attack mechanisms that target the virus and destroy it. This year, we have participated in an Expanded Access Program to provide blood products (known as convalescent plasma) from recovered patients, in order to treat patients hospitalized with a serious or life-threatening coronavirus infection.

Based on the best available information by our publication date, treatment with convalescent plasma may be helpful in some cases, and the protocol was recently approved under the FDA’s Emergency Use Authorization. This authorization will help provide even more patients with access to this potentially lifesaving treatment.

We extend many sincere thanks to donors like Carole, who are helping us to deliver potentially helpful investigational therapies to patients who can benefit from them — and to increase global understanding of these therapies’ potential to save lives.

Grateful Hearts

Gratitude through giving.

Lawn signs across our campus have uplifted our caregivers’ spirits during the pandemic. Each sign documents a contribution made through the COVID-19 Response Fund, and includes heartfelt words of thanks and encouragement from the thoughtful donors.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have grown accustomed to hearing the phrase “essential workers.” Huntington Hospital team members provide essential care to patients during the pandemic and always. In gratitude, many generous patients choose to give back through donations to our work.

When you make a gift through our Grateful Hearts program, you honor an exceptional staff member or members who have gone the extra mile to make your hospital stay the very best it can be. At the same time, your gift helps us to ensure the very best of care for other patients.

Irene Chen, RN; Katrina Foley, BSN, RN; and Zim Liang, BA, are among the skilled and compassionate professionals recently honored through the Grateful Hearts program. Read what they have to say about this acknowledgment, below.

Three years of service.

“It’s wonderful when patients recognize our service. It means so much to us, to the hospital and to the entire community!”

Six years of service.

“Hearing a patient’s appreciation makes me feel honored to continue doing the work I do here. It adds to the passion I have to help others and it makes me want to keep going the extra mile.”

Thirteen years of service.

“I felt special and very honored to learn that perhaps I helped to make a difference in someone’s life. It’s a joyful feeling to know that there are donors who care enough to help Huntington Hospital help others.”

Fall Food + Wine Festival A new twist on an old favorite.

Each October, Fall Food + Wine Festival guests gather on the grounds between the Parkway Grill and Arroyo Chop House for the party of the season. They come to eat, drink, dance — and save lives: Their participation raises funds for Huntington Hospital Trauma Center, the largest trauma center in our region.

Of course, 2020 was different. Due to the danger of COVID-19 transmission, we were not able to meet in person. However, support for trauma care remains urgent. Trauma patients rely on us for lifesaving care around the clock and throughout the year, including during the pandemic — and, traditionally, our festival plays a critical role in making that care possible.

Without the event, we would face a shortfall in funding, further stretching our financial resources at this very challenging time. Thankfully, the spirit of the festival remained unbroken, despite the cancellation of the physical event. With creative input from the event committee, the 2020 festival was reimagined as a special fundraising campaign, dubbed the Fall Food + Wine Restival. Generous community donors provided gifts totaling more than $240,000 in urgently needed support through this campaign, which will bring essential care to patients with life-threatening injuries. Specifically, funds are helping us invest in state-of-the-art equipment (Belmont® Rapid Infuser RI-2s) to treat patients who have suffered massive blood loss.

A portion of funds also supports Stop the Bleed, an important program through which we teach community members to stop potentially fatal bleeding, preserving life until emergency responders can arrive. In addition, Restival contributions are helping to cover the cost of ongoing, advanced education for nurses and medical residents who care for patients in the trauma center.

The center remains an essential and unduplicated component of our region’s medical system. While we were unable to gather and thank our Fall Food + Wine Restival donors in person, we are immensely grateful for their generous support.

Members of the Altadena Guild, Flintridge La Cañada Guild, and Huntington Charity League have generated much-needed support for Huntington Hospital over many years. We truly appreciate their ongoing devoted involvement. Funds raised by these generous volunteer groups have helped keep the hospital strong. This strength has allowed us to meet critical challenges — including the COVID-19 pandemic — head on.

From all of us at Huntington Hospital, thank you.

We’re grateful to our volunteer groups.

Volunteers giving back.

This past spring, in-person volunteering at Huntington Hospital was temporarily put on hold, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While our dedicated volunteers have been unable to carry out their work on campus during this time, they have continued to show their generosity of spirit in several ways. Many have been working to create high-quality face masks, which they have donated for use by non-clinical staff. “Given their work, these staff members don’t need to wear medical-grade masks,” says Stacy Miller, director of volunteer services. Handmade masks are also distributed to clinical staff to wear outside the hospital. “They love knowing our volunteers are thinking about them,” she adds, “and being able to wear something other than a surgical mask when not at work.”

Other volunteers have made and donated ear savers to the hospital. “Ear savers help make wearing a mask more comfortable,” explains Stacy, “so these gifts are very meaningful for caregivers who work long shifts.”

The creative involvement of our volunteers does not stop there: Many have also made beautiful hand-painted cards to share with our patients and our frontline heroes.

“At a time when supplies and materials can be difficult to get, the kindness of our volunteers is much appreciated,” says Stacy. “We are beyond grateful!

Your giving protects.

Philanthropic gifts from our community help to ensure great care for moms and their babies. That includes world-class labor and delivery services, specialized support for women with high-risk pregnancies, and an advanced neonatal intensive care unit for newborns with serious medical needs. Local donors are also supporting protective measures that safeguard the well-being of babies and families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hayley English and her husband, Nick, welcomed their son, George, into the world in May 2020. George was part of the fourth generation of the family to be born at Huntington Hospital: Hayley’s mother was born here, as was Nick’s grandmother. Hayley and Nick’s first child, Emily, was also born here in 2019.

The English’s family ties to the hospital extend beyond receiving care: Hayley’s grandparents Henry and Cynthia Yost have been longtime supporters. So, too, are Hayley’s parents, Debbi and Randy Hoffman.

When Hayley and Nick arrived at the hospital in May, the reality of a widespread pandemic was still fairly new. For many, it might have seemed a scary time to need hospital care, but Hayley and Nick knew they were in the right place. “All of the nurses and doctors were very good at communicating with us about the precautions they were taking,” Hayley says. “We felt reassured that we were in a safe environment.”

Precautions included, for example, testing both parents for COVID-19 at checkin and ensuring their caregivers wore personal protective equipment at all times. Safety protocols also meant that additional visitors were not able to join them, but “With the team’s help, it was still an exciting, happy experience,” Hayley says, referring to her OB-GYN, Michael Mitri, MD, and other compassionate caregivers. “The whole focus was on the two of us bringing a special little life into the world.”

Today, George is a happy, healthy baby, cherished by the whole family, including big sister Emily, who “gives him love constantly,” says Hayley.

“I honestly can’t imagine a better place than Huntington Hospital to deliver a baby,” she notes — giving credit to the expert caregivers and to the generous community donors who also play a role in making superior care possible here. “My family has been happy to help,” she adds, “because we know how important donations are to ensure such a high caliber of care.”

Comfort and kindness.

When Lily Huang was injured going down a pool slide at the age of 6, her mother, Yanling Ma, rushed her to Huntington Hospital. Lily was born here and Yanling knew she could trust us.

Lily’s injuries were serious enough that she needed to stay at the hospital for care and observation over several days. The inpatient experience can be scary for a little girl, but our team not only provided the best of care; they also tried to calm Lily’s fears.

At first, nothing seemed to help. Toys did not distract Lily. Even a visit from one of our Pet-Assisted Therapy dogs did not lift her spirits. Then, as Yanling recalls, “A lady came by with a blankie, in bright colors.” Lily perked up and began to nod her head. She wanted it.

The blanket was among those donated to us to provide an extra measure of comfort to pediatric patients here — and that is exactly what it did for Lily. On the day she left the hospital, she still held tight to her new blankie, which she was able to take home with her.

“I was really impressed with the way people at the hospital go above and beyond to bring comfort to sick kids,” says Yanling. Lily too, now 12, has never forgotten the kind gift she received when she really needed it — and, as a way to bring comfort to another hospitalized child during the COVID-19 pandemic, she told her mom she would in turn like to make a blanket and donate it to our hospital.

Together, Lily and Yanling did just that. The colorful blanket they knitted — with blues, pinks, purples and oranges — will bring joy to a pediatric patient here. “I just wanted someone to get a blanket like I got,” Lily explains. “I had such great care in the hospital. I wanted to give something back.”

Every day, in numerous ways, Huntington Hospital staff members demonstrate their deep commitment to our mission. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen additional examples of this commitment, as staff members have courageously rallied to provide frontline care, around the clock.

The many hospital employees who participate in our I am Huntington employee giving campaign gift us doubly — through their philanthropy and through their dedicated work. The campaign is an important part of our Huntington Annual Fund, and

gifts help us provide the best possible care to all patients, including those with COVID-19, in our region. Whether made via payroll deduction, credit card, cash or check, all donations support the work employees do every day to provide world-class care.

Our organizational goal was to involve at least 15 percent of all employees by the end of 2020, and thanks to the generous involvement of so many on our team, we did just that!

We are deeply grateful to all employees who have given through I Am Huntington They continue to inspire us through their above-and-beyond dedication to the health of our community.

AROUND THE CAMPUS

Building a better future.

Generous philanthropic gifts from grateful patients and other members of our community make it possible for us to carry out important improvements that are essential to the future of great care at Huntington Hospital.

In recent months, we have made significant progress on several ambitious projects, including construction of a new cardiovascular center, enhancements to our surgical suites and upgrades to other healthcare facilities. While we experienced some minor delays due to COVID-19, construction work has continued during the pandemic, and some projects are now complete.

We recently finished updates to our Wingate and Hahn buildings, which required seismic upgrades in order for 75 essential inpatient

38 Responding to COVID-19 together.

beds housed there to remain in service. Moving forward, we anticipate concluding work on our new cardiovascular center by the end of February 2021 and look forward to welcoming patients to the facility soon after that.

Construction of our upgraded surgery center will be carried out in two phases: New surgery suites will be built out by April 2021. Upgrades to existing suites will then commence — with this second phase scheduled to be concluded by September 2021.

The completion of these projects will mark the beginning of a new chapter in exceptional care for our region. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to build for the future of high-quality health care.

Facilities upgrades now underway are helping prepare us for the future of care. Above: Azhil (Alex) Durairaj, MD, medical director of cardiology, looks in on construction at our new cardiovascular center, scheduled for completion in early 2021.

Staying informed.

During the pandemic, members of our President’s Circle have had several opportunities to receive updates about COVID-19, through special presentations by infectious disease specialist Kimberly Shriner, MD. Most recently, President’s Circle members at the Associate level and above were invited to a briefing regarding flu season and the coronavirus. The lunchtime event was held virtually and donors had the option of picking up a complimentary meal in advance.

Visit https://giving.huntingtonhospital. com/presidents-circle to learn more about the President’s Circle of Huntington Hospital.

Dear friends:

When you read this, it will be 2021 — at last! Happy new year to you and your loved ones, and I hope you had a peaceful and healthy holiday season, even as some of our treasured traditions were disrupted.

With 2020 now firmly in the rearview mirror, it is good to look forward to the future. Vaccines will be more widely available, promising the opportunity to spend time with one another again. Huntington Hospital will soon complete exceptional new facilities for the future of care, including a new cardiovascular center, updated surgery center, and a secure campus.

Let’s not forget, though, the important things we learned in 2020. The importance of medical science that informs breakthroughs in vaccine development and advanced clinical care. The indomitable spirit of our frontline staff, who selflessly do what it takes to care for us — even when our understanding of this new and life-threatening disease was changing day by day. We also learned that what each of us does — wearing a mask, socially distancing, washing our hands — has an impact on the health and well-being of others.

I have never been more convinced of the importance of Huntington Hospital in our community — and of our collective interest in keeping it strong. I urge you to join me in supporting this heroic organization and the excellent and compassionate care it offers every day.
