Early in 2020, the world as we knew it turned upside down and put distance between us and everyone we were used to being close to, including our patients and co-workers. Faced with challenges they had never before encountered, our resourceful team searched for solutions to new problems.

I am reminded of this tender quote by Fred Rogers as I reflect on 2020, and it inspires me to add that my heroes are also anyone who does anything to help a person who is dying.

The staff and volunteers at Harbor Hospice don’t wear capes, and they don’t fly through the air or leap tall buildings…yet they are spectacular. So I want to dedicate this annual report to each of them. They faced a global pandemic and, amid scary and uncertain circumstances, found the strength and courage to overcome fear and apprehension in order to safely care for our patients and their families.

Heroes must also show that the path they offer is safe and sure. Those layers of personal protective equipment we now wear—the facemasks, shields, gowns and gloves that have become our new uniforms—are one more way we let our patients know they can trust us to safely care for them. Those layers have also given families the assurance they need to entrust the care of their precious loved one to us.

As I write this in mid-spring, West Michigan is still reeling with high rates of COVID-19 infection. It is impossible to predict what normal will look like in six months or even a year from now. We have learned to live differently. Yet, what has not changed is this: you can trust that our care of patients, and the family members who surround them, continues to be our North Star. Their wellbeing, comfort and safety come first, no matter what else is swirling around us.

“How do we communicate with a patient who is hard of hearing and reads lips, when we have to wear a mask?” our team members asked. And with characteristic creativity and innovation, they began exploring ideas for that and countless other questions. To solve the mask dilemma, they requested special transparent medical-grade facemasks. The masks were hot and fogged up their eyewear, but they wore them anyway so they could safely continue to maintain absolutely essential communication with their patients—all their patients.
