Club News We’re thrilled to see that the Glen Kernan Club has been featured twice recently in esteemed national coverage — a testament to the club’s transformation and growing reputation. Golfweek published two features celebrating our course renovation led by Jim Furyk and recognizing the club as Jacksonville’s first “super-premium” private club. Thank you to our Members for being part of this exciting new chapter! ’Boutique’ private golf clubs are hot — here’s one in Florida Golf is hot again, with 47.2 million Americans participating in the game in 2024 (on-course and off-course combined) according to the National Golf Foundation. That’s up 57 percent in the past decade. No other sport has experienced that kind of volume growth. Not surprisingly, golf ball sales, the ultimate consumable, are up more than 50 percent compared to pre-pandemic levels and are continuing to drive an uptick in equipment sales. Glen Kernan reopens after Jim Furyk renovation in Jacksonville “Our goal was to make the golf course challenge our stronger players at the Jaguar tees and make the course more playable for the folks playing the forward tees,” Furyk said. “That is difficult to do. I tried to leave areas to run the ball up on the green and benign pins but also present a left pin over the bunker with a backstop you’ll have to putt over if you miss it.” Furyk, who works in partnership with architect Mike Beebe, lengthened the back tees by 400 yards to just over 7,200 yards but shortened the course from the forward tees by about 500 yards. Angles are tougher for the stronger player and friendlier from the forward tees. [read the full article]

Golf News FROM THE GREE NS WITH JOE WILLIAMS DI R E C T O R O F AGR ONOMY
Dear Members, I hope you are all doing well and enjoying the New Year. As we conclude our first season on the newly opened course, I want to provide an update on conditions and outline the deliberate steps our agronomy team is taking to ensure Glen Kernan continues to mature exactly as intended.
We are also addressing surface firmness and smoothness with a comprehensive plan that includes aerification, topdressing, and verticutting. These practices will improve playability, manage grain, and create more uniform surfaces as we enter the next growing season.
It is expected that our newly renovated golf course will show areas of compaction during its inaugural winter season, particularly as we move into shorter days and cooler temperatures. The turf is responding as anticipated for a firstyear grow-in, and these conditions fall well within normal parameters. As the course continues to establish, winter turf will have a stronger canopy and a less compacted feel, resulting in better playing conditions.
Our first season has provided valuable insight into specific pressure points on the greens—whether related to moisture management, nematode activity, or localized stress. With this knowledge, we have clear, actionable strategies in place to address each area effectively and prevent future issues.
Protecting the turf during this phase is a priority, and our traffic-management strategies are already proving effective. Continued adherence to all traffic-control measures allows us to minimize stress and promote long-term turf health. To further support this effort, we are expanding screening areas in key locations to improve traffic flow and safeguard highuse zones. Throughout the winter and into spring, our team will systematically address areas experiencing the greatest traffic and environmental stress. This work includes shade management (tree removal), root pruning, and selective tree trimming to enhance airflow, light penetration, and growing conditions. Once the turf resumes active growth, these areas will receive targeted fertilization and focused agronomic attention to ensure strong, consistent recovery.
To further strengthen our program, we engaged a highly respected USGA agronomist to review our agronomic approach through extensive testing. This collaboration reinforces our commitment to best-in-class course management and ensures we are applying the most cutting-edge practices today and into the future. I appreciate your continued trust, patience, and support. The foundation is strong, the plan is clear, and we are confident in the progress ahead. We look forward to continuing to elevate Glen Kernan and delivering the course experience our Members expect. Warm regards, Joe Williams
Director of Agronomy

Golf News G OLF TIPS FROM JOHNNY RAND OLPH P G A H E A D G OLF PR OFE SS IO NAL
Tips From The Tee: Focus On Tempo, NOT Tension Many amateur golfers struggle with tension, especially on the first tee or with challenging shots. Tension often shows up as a tight grip, rigid arms, and a rushed swing. Instead, aim for a smooth, controlled tempo. A great swing starts with a relaxed body and a smooth takeaway— think of swinging “easy” rather than swinging “hard.” Try humming a song or counting in your head to find a consistent rhythm. By making tempo your priority, you’ll produce more solid contact and better results without feeling like you must force it. Golf is a game of finesse, not brute strength. Johnny Randolph

PRACTICE FACILITY HOURS OF OPERATION Monday, 8AM Until 1 Hour Before Dusk Wednesday - Sunday, 8AM Until 30 Minutes Before Dusk Exclusive to Golf Members only, we are delighted to welcome you out for practice and preparation. As you enjoy this space, please observe proper divot management by practicing using vertical line patterns rather than scatter or solid block patterns. This method dramatically improves turf recovery and ensures optimal conditions for all Members. We look forward to your next visit and to a fantastic season of excellent golf!

MES SAGE FROM ALINE BERKE NBRO CK D IR E CTO R OF R ACQUE T SPOR T S This past year marked significant growth and momentum across Glen Kernan’s Tennis and Pickleball programs. We welcomed an Interclub Ladies A3 team, currently first in league play, alongside our established B1, B2, and C2 teams. We also expanded our First Coast presence with new C2 and A3 teams, and launched an A3 Working Women team in conjunction with B1 Working Women and B1 First Coast. In addition, we fielded a Mixed Doubles team and Men’s 3.0 and 3.5 teams, further strengthening competitive opportunities across the Club.
Looking ahead, our focus is on continuing this growth. We aim to increase participation across our tennis teams and to start additional pickleball groups for Members interested in learning or playing more regularly. At Glen Kernan, there is room for all players, at all levels and with all interests. I’m excited about what’s ahead and grateful to be part of such an engaged and growing racquet sports community. Aline Berkenbrock Director of Racquet
Our junior programs continue to thrive, with Thursday afternoon kids clinics and Thursday night coed clinics consistently full and bringing great energy to the courts. It has been exciting to see so many young players developing their skills and enthusiasm for the game. This year also included tremendous overall growth in the tennis program and an incredible inaugural Member–Member tennis event, which truly showcased the spirit and community of Glen Kernan. Pickleball has also become a vibrant part of club life. Our courts are often full in the evenings, offering Members a fun, social way to play with family and friends. We currently offer pickleball clinics for kids, beginners, intermediates, and advanced players, making the sport accessible and welcoming at all levels.
