HGH Annual Community Health Fair

This March, we proudly hosted our annual Community Health Fair, organized by our Wellness Coordinator, Billie Lucero. With 34 vendors offering a wide range of services, the event focused on our top priority improving the health and well-being of our community. It was a great opportunity to connect with local resources and learn more about living a healthier, safer lifestyle.

Throughout the day, HGH staff actively promoted our services. Our High School EMT students provided blood pressure checks and demonstrated Hands-Only CPR, while clinic teams shared information about their services and our Nutrition team highlighted dietary guidelines.

We also offered discounted lab work for just $25, including a CMP, Lipid Panel, CBC, Hemoglobin A1c, and TSH, with PSA available for an additional $5. In total, 184 labs were completed, giving participants valuable insight into their health

At the same time, we hosted our second blood drive of the year in partnership with Vitalant and the Bureau o Land Management. Together, these events brought in families from across the community some learning more about their health, others donating blood to help save lives.

With staff sharing resources, answering questions, and guiding attendees, and with the support of our incredible vendors, the event reached over 600 participants. It’s always inspiring to see our community come together in support of better health.

Humboldt General Hospital Remodel

HGH has been undergoing several updates over the past few weeks: both inside and out. The hospital’s exterior signage is getting a fresh new look, replacing the worn appearance with something clean and renewed.

The Pharmacy remodel is close to completion as well. The benefits of the new and improved compounding suite will help improve care patient care as well as daily workflow throughout the entire hospital.

For our pharmacy, this means being able to make multiple batches of medications for weeks to come. How is this a benefit patients? Now our pharmacy team is able to respond faster to patient care throughout the day as they won’t be pulled away from making antibiotics.

For our nursing team, this means 24/7 timely access to sterile ready-to-use medications. Rather than having nursing staff mix antibiotics and medications on the floor, they can retrieve readily compounded sorted IV medications quicker and safer. Patients who need special doses while they’re here can have them compounded without premixed extras going to waste.

Overall, this upgrade improves safety, reduces the risk of medication errors, enhances efficiency for both nursing and pharmacy staff, and helps lower costs by minimizing waste and using more cost-effective options.

A Journey To Healthcare

HGH’s New CNAs

Humboldt General Hospital (HGH) is dedicated to providing our community with the best care possible and offering the most opportunities to receive care close to home. To achieve this, our staff is essential in keeping each department running smoothly. Great Basin Community College (GBC) has done an outstanding job educating students who eventually become valuable members of our team. Thanks to their commitment to education and our dedication to compassionate care, our partnership benefits both sides. Several of their programs, including nursing, medical assisting, phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, and more, offer students the opportunity to gain experience through clinical rotations at HGH.

At HGH, we collaborate with Great Basin College to provide students with the chance to pursue healthcare careers right here in Winnemucca. Through state-of-the-art labs and high-fidelity technology, students gain valuable hands-on experience. Ludivynne Canales and Ava Marquis are just two of the students who went through the GBC program and are starting out at HGH.

Starting in the CNA program last fall semester, Ludivynne perused her education for nearly two years. While she graduated in May with her associates, she also completed her clinicals last December at Harmoney Manor and Acute Med/Surg in HGH. After completing the CNA program, she applied for a CNA position here and is now working full time. Ludivynne is also perusing her education in the nursing program at GBC.

“I am incredibly grateful for the experience and support I’ve received so far. The CNAs I worked with during clinicals, as well as those who trained me, have been amazing and have taught me so much...Looking ahead, I hope to continue my journey in nursing and eventually become a travel ICU nurse.” -Ludivynne

Ava began her journey in September. She was interested in the nursing program in the start, but as she continued with it the more, she enjoyed it. Working with the patients face to face allows her to get a hands-on learning experience that the classroom can’t quite replicate. Ava is now working at HGH and applying for the nursing program Fall 2027. We are excited to see where these two will go next in there healthcare journey, and are cheering them on!

Hospital Week and Monarch

One of the biggest events of the year at HGH is Hospital Week and Monarch. This special time allows us to celebrate our incredible staff their teamwork, dedication, and the unique contributions each person brings to caring for our community. Our team works hard year-round to innovate and enhance the services we provide, and this celebration is our way of giving back. From fun games to meaningful awards and team-building activities, it’s a week dedicated to recognizing the people who make it all happen.

Nurses Week

A hospital can’t function without nurses, and our nursing staff is truly exceptional. Across every department, they bring compassion, skill, and an unwavering commitment to delivering outstanding patient care. Each year during Nurses Week, we recognize their dedication with the Nurse Nightingale Quality Staff Member award, honoring those who go above and beyond in their role. While we know words can never fully express our gratitude, celebrating our largest department is one small way we say thank you. We appreciate all that our nurses do, every single day.

EMS Week

Most EMS departments are part of a private organization or a local fire department. Here, however, we have the ability to work under the same leadership. HGH EMS goes above and beyond for our community. From specialized extrication skills to paramedicine, their scope of care is extensive. They are also dedicated to shaping the future of emergency care by training new EMTs, AEMTs, and paramedics, all while continuing their own commitment to lifelong learning and advanced certifications. EMS Week is a time to recognize and celebrate these incredible professionals .

Graduation

Graduation is approaching fast once again this year. We will have EMS students, GBC students from various programs, High School Emergency Medical Technician students, and even some of our providers in the Rural Residency Clinic graduating. As they enter the final stretch, we wish them continued success and look forward to celebrating their accomplishments. Congratulations to all of our graduates— we’re cheering you on every step of the way!

Denim Day At HGH

On April 29 HGH employees came together in support of WDVS and Denim Day. th Denim Day began after a 1998 court ruling in Italy overturned a rape conviction, arguing that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped remove them: implying consent. The decision sparked outrage, and in protest, women in the Italian Parliament wore denim to stand in solidarity with the survivor. That act grew into an international movement dedicated to educating communities and advocating for survivors. Wearing denim at HGH was more than a symbol, it was a statement. It represented a commitment to believing survivors, promoting respect, and continuing important conversations about consent, accountability, and prevention. It was also a reminder of the impact words, actions, and assumptions can have, and the importance of creating safe, supportive environments for everyone.

Denim was down every single hall that day, and we couldn’t have been prouder of all of our employees.

How to Take Care Of Seasonal Allergies

Allergies happen when your immune system overreacts to something that is normally unharmful, such as pollen, pet dander, and foods. Your body thinks it is harmful and reacts to get rid of it. Allergies for some people can be simply annoying while others have to alter their lives to avoid reactions.

Symptoms can range from: skin rashes or hives, itchy skin, sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, cough, wheezing, itchy watery eyes, swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, vomiting or diarrhea, and low blood pressure. Symptoms can start within minutes of exposure while other times it may take hours or days; they should go away after a few hours when you are no longer exposed to the allergen.

Yet, when you find yourself in the midst of allergy seasons, there are ways you can help manage and limit your reactions.

Follow these tips from American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology this alleregy season.

Keep your windows closed during pollen season, and keep areas clean, cool, and dry.

Check pollen forecasts and limit your time outdoors during high levels. If exposure is unavoidable wear a mask. Don’t touch your eyes outside and wash your hands before touching your eyes indoors. Take a shower, wash your hair, and change your clothes after you are exposed to allergens.

A cold washcloth or eye drops made for allergies to help ve itchy eyes.

your allergy medicines such as antihistamines, corticosteroid nasal ys, leukotriene modifiers, or decongestants. If those aren’t working, try unotherapy.

es are a part of everyday life for millions of people and for most they anageable. However, if you have severe reactions or have concerns, talk with your healthcare provider.
