Message from United Way’s Board Chairman & President/CEO

Dear Friend, Inspiration comes in many forms. It could be as inconspicuous as a child’s smile or a simple gesture of kindness … or as obvious as saving a life or reuniting a family. Regardless of where it comes from, we are grateful that you were inspired to give to Heart of Florida United Way this year.

As a contributor to the 2012-2013 campaign, your generosity allowed Heart of Florida United Way impact more than 400,000 people in our community. To understand this impact, imagine the number of seats in the Amway Center. Now, think about filling every single one … 20 times. As a result of our community’s contributions, that’s how many of our neighbors we were able to reach through education, income, health and basic needs programs.

United Way is many things to many people. But at the core of our mission is the dedication to improving the quality of life for as many individuals and families as possible in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties. On the following pages, we’ll summarize our work in the 2012-2013 year and highlight some of the real people who were served. You’ll see where your dollar is going, and the lives it is changing.

The names recognized are those who were inspired to give $1,000 or more in the 2012-2013 campaign. The tremendous spirit and compassion of these individuals and families allows us to accomplish great things together. Education

• A total of 4,432 local children and teens participated in programs to improve academic success and on-time graduation rates • 100% of participating high school seniors graduated on time • 95% of students improved their school attendance rates • 87% of children were developmentally on target for kindergarten readiness

• 20,904 tri-county residents received training, counseling and other tools for improving financial stability • 98% of clients improved employability skills • 223,369 Earned Income Tax Credit claims were filed regionally, bringing $551 million back to Central Florida last tax year

Health

• 3,355 residents received support and services that helped them maintain or improve their health and well-being • 96% of caregivers improved their parenting skills and understanding of their child’s development

Basic Needs

• 56,900 tri-county residents facing homelessness, hunger and other emergencies received help through United Way’s Stewardship program • 107,841 meals were provided by feeding programs • 92% of clients with shelter issues resolved their crisis and moved to a more stable situation • 217,642 people were helped through 2-1-1 services that HFUW provided to a total of 15 counties, including Orange, Seminole and Osceola 6

COMMON GOOD Investing in Results Heart of Florida United Way is moving in a bold direction focused on prevention. Building on our tradition of helping millions of Central Floridians since 1939, by focusing on prevention, as opposed to intervention, HFUW believes it can change the course for future generations of children and families.

By percentage, 2012-2013 program funding across all four focus areas was as follows:

Therefore, Heart of Florida United Way has put a stake in the ground and is declaring bold goals to find long-term solutions for our community’s most pressing problems.

CAMPAIGN KICK OFF More than 300 local business and civic leaders joined forces to help launch United Way’s 2012-2013 campaign, chaired by Shawn Bartelt, vice president and general manager for WFTV Channel 9 and WRDQ Central Florida’s Channel 27.

UNITED WAY DAYS OF CARING

For the 22nd year, Heart of Florida United Way mobilized hundreds of individuals from nearly 30 local companies to contribute to Days of Caring, a massive one-day volunteer effort that impacted more than 1,800 children at 18 partner agencies. Lockheed Martin led the way with more than 1,000 employees participating. Publix, SunTrust, UPS, Bank of America, Orlando Magic, Ernst & Young, Fifth Third Bank and many others also took part.

21st ANNUAL CHEF’S GALA

Twenty-four top chefs joined together for the 21st Annual Chef’s ® Gala supported by Walt Disney World Resort and other sponsors.

The event featured extraordinary food, fine wines, live music and silent auction. More than 1,000 guests enjoyed the evening, which generated a record-breaking total of $296,000.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON Emmy-award winning journalist Deborah Norville share how maintaining a thankful attitude can help women overcome any personal challenge during an inspiration speech to more than 700 guests at the Sixth Annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon.

LEADERSHIP APPRECIATION EVENT More than 2,000 of United Way’s most generous donors attended the 15th Annual Leadership Appreciation Event hosted by SeaWorld Orlando. The event, which honors those who annually donate $1,000 or more, is an annual tradition for many families. Guests enjoyed breakfast and day of family fun in the park.

LIVE UNITED CELEBRATION

Hundreds of workplace giving participants attended the 2012-2013 campaign wrap-up event held at the Orlando Science Center. The campaign raised $17.5 million thanks to the generous spirit of our community.

Overcoming Homelessness Last year, Jose Velazquez, an Army combat veteran, said he was facing an unbelievable crisis after he had lost his job and couldn’t find another. “One week before Christmas, my family and I became homeless and had to move into our van,” Velazquez said. “As a husband and father, it was the lowest point in my life.” Velazquez and his family overcame homelessness with help from United Way’s Veteran’s Assistance Program. “The help we received through United Way truly made all the difference in the world.”
