United Way by the Numbers What kind of community do you want for your children? How do you know your charitable dollars are having the greatest possible impact?

We at Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW) know that you have many choices and considerations when it comes to your philanthropic investments. That’s why we continually strive to maintain our reputation as the tri-county region’s largest, most effective and transparent funder of local health and human service programs. The numbers tell our story:

The total amount HFUW was responsible for raising, managing and distributing in fiscal year 2011-2012.

This also includes monies managed through the United Way Stewardship Program, which administers emergency food, shelter and utility assistance funds, the United Way Gifts in Kind Center and the Ryan White HIV/AIDS assistance program.

Message from United Way’s Board Chairman & President/CEO

Dear Friend, Each year, Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW) seeks the best, most heartfelt way to thank our Leadership Donors, whose legacy of compassion and generosity are what makes our community great.

Words, no matter how sincere, cannot convey the profound difference you have made – and continue to make ‒ in the lives of tens of thousands of local children, families and seniors who have simply had nowhere else to turn. On their behalf, we offer our deepest thanks.

On the following pages, you’ll meet a few of the people who’ve been helped through your generosity and hear their stories in their own words. You’ll also see an update on Investing in Results, United Way’s strategic model focused on prevention. Since adopting this innovative approach four years ago, our organization has channeled resources and expertise to address the root causes of poverty, hunger, homelessness, low graduation rates and other pressing problems. Today, we are proud and pleased to have good news to share, thanks in large part to the trust and support of thousands of leadership donors, corporate partners, volunteers and others who have joined us on this important journey.

With lingering effects of economic recession still impacting many in our community, United Way remains firmly committed to meeting residents’ urgent, immediate needs. And with an eye toward the future, we will also stay true to our goals and vision to transform the long-term health and well-being of our entire community. That’s good for everyone.

Improving Lives and Community Conditions

FOCUSING ON

PREVENTION

As stewards of precious community resources, United Way focuses dollars for greatest impact, as well as the greatest return on our community’s investment.

Research shows that every dollar spent on prevention saves $7 in intervention.

Prevention makes smart economic sense and it’s the right thing to do for people.

To move the needle on serious problems, United Way is focusing work and resources in these four priority areas, which we call Investing in Results:

Creating safer neighborhoods by reducing violence – especially youth violence – through programs that mentor teens, improve high-school graduation rates and promote life success

Helping low-income families increase their financial stability through financial literacy programs, credit counseling, improved access to affordable childcare, resources for building savings and more

Improving the health of children and families through partnerships that promote mental, physical and social well-being through healthy beginnings, access to healthy choices, family engagement and education

Reducing hunger and homelessness by linking people to public assistance programs, affordable housing and other prevention-based resources

United Way Helps Orlando Family Keep Electricity On When Fred Barr called United Way 2-1-1, he had nowhere left to turn. As a former ad agency creative director, he’d been laid off during the recession and was unable to find another job.

As the sole provider for his teenage son and wife, who has multiple sclerosis, Fred felt enormous pressure to hold things together. But when his savings and benefits ran out, things went from bad to worse when he learned he had cancer.

Unable to pay bills, Fred called United Way 2-1-1 when his electricity was about to be shut off. After being qualified by case managers, he received several months of utility assistance, which helped him stabilize the crisis, continue his treatment and hold his family together.

“United Way really kept us afloat during a difficult time,” Fred said. “There are certain things you need to survive – rent, utilities, food, insurance – it’s a like a chain. And when the chain breaks, you’re really unprotected. United Way 2-1-1 helped me keep the chain solid.”

Dividing the Dollars Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW) was responsible for raising, managing and distributing $25.3 million throughout Central Florida in fiscal year 2011-2012.

Known as “total resources,� these include dollars raised through the workplace giving campaign, leadership giving, special events and other donor-related activities.

It also includes monies managed through emergency food and shelter programs, utility assistance programs, a military veterans program, the Gifts in Kind Center and the Ryan White Part B HIV/AIDS assistance program. HFUW also solicits and administers several state and private foundation grants such as one for United Way 2-1-1 crisis counseling services funded by the Florida Department of Children and Families.

These, combined with other programs, services and resources, make Heart of Florida United Way, the region’s largest funder of local health and human service programs.

With your help, United Way touched the lives of more than 347,594 people last year. From children to seniors, to those recovering from job loss or a family health crisis, United Waysupported programs help people at every stage of life.

United Way Campaign Raises a Goal-Shattering $19,365,723 to Help Central Floridians in Need Thanks to a tremendously generous community, United Way’s 2011-2012 campaign roared past its $17.4 million goal to raise $19,365,723, representing an 11.2% increase over the previous year and the highest campaign total since 2001.

Led by Campaign Chair David Fuller, Chairman, President and CEO of SunTrust Bank, Central Florida, the campaign was supported by nearly 400 corporate partners, who truly rallied together to help neighbors in need. Leadership donors, 2,580 in all, were another major component of the campaign’s success, contributing a combined $4,526,830.

“We went into the 2011-2012 campaign with a feeling of optimism, yet we were mindful of the difficult fundraising environment that we faced across Central Florida,” Fuller said. “It’s when times are tough that a community shows its character. There is much for all of us to be proud of from this campaign.”

Among the campaign’s Million Dollar Community Champions were: • Walt Disney World, consistently the campaign’s largest contributor, donated its largest-ever HFUW contribution of $5.7 million.

• Publix Super Markets, Inc. contributed $2.6 million, including $523,000 donated by 428 Leadership donors.

• Lockheed Martin Corporation raised $1.1 million, thanks to incredible support from 2,500 employees, including 310 Leadership Donors whose donations totaled $330,000.

Other top giving companies included Darden Restaurants, Inc.; SunTrust Bank of Central Florida; Orange County Government; UPS, Florida District; Tupperware Brands Corporation; AT&T; Florida Hospital; Wells Fargo; Enterprise Holdings; SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment; Siemens Energy, Inc.; and many others.

The Year in Review CAMPAIGN KICK OFF Central Florida’s top companies and business leaders came together to help kick off United Way’s 2011-2012 Campaign, chaired by David Fuller, President and CEO, SunTrust Bank, Central Florida.

UNITED WAY DAYS OF CARING More than 2,000 corporate volunteers took part in United Way Days of Caring, the region’s largest community-wide volunteer event. Once again, Lockheed Martin led the way with more than 1,000 employees participating. In all, 50-plus companies took part in the event and completed 72 projects.

20th ANNUAL CHEF’S GALA Tantalizing food from 25 tops chefs, fine wine, and tremendous support from WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort and other great sponsors combined to make the 20th Annual Chef ’s Gala the most successful ever. More than $219,175 was raised.

LIVE UNITED ALL-STAR CELEBRATION In recognition of those who made the 20112012 campaign such a winning season, the LIVE UNITED All-Star Celebration was held in April at the Amway Center. Thanks to tremendous community generosity, the campaign raised a nearly $19.36 million.

WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP LUNCHEON Discussing everything from her career as a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model to the entrepreneurial achievements highlighted in Forbes magazine, Kathy Ireland inspired more than 820 female leaders during the Fifth Annual United Way Women’s Leadership Luncheon.

LEADERSHIP APPRECIATION EVENT For the 14th year in a row, United Way teamed up with SeaWorld Orlando to thank and honor more than 2,000 Leadership donors who enjoyed an appreciation breakfast and day of family fun in the park with Shamu.

Jenny Johnson Holds Family Together with Help from United Way Jenny Johnson, is petite, bright and full of energy. She is also extremely busy. In addition to working full-time and raising her own two sons, she’s also a surrogate “mom” for her teenage siblings, Kelvin, 16, and Ashley, 18.

Jenny beams with pride when she talks about Ashley, who is attending Florida A&M University. “No one in our family has ever gone to college before,” she said.

“I’m so happy for her.”

When Jenny was 18, things were different.

After her grandmother – the only real mother she ever knew – died, Jenny and her siblings went to live with an aunt who didn’t want them.

As soon as she was able, Jenny moved out and brought her siblings to live with her.

Though things were never easy, finances reached a breaking point last year when she could no longer afford to pay the rent.

Fortunately, when she called United Way 2-1-1, she was qualified to receive temporary rent and utility assistance.

In addition, case managers helped the family find a better place to live and even coached Ashley on how to fill out college applications.

Today, thanks to a job promotion and timely help from United Way, Jenny’s family is doing much better. “I’m only 28, but I’ve struggled for so long, sometimes I feel like an old lady,” she said. “United Way really, really helped. If it wasn’t23for them, we’d probably be homeless."

Ahkeem Hollimon: Striving for Excellence When Ahkeem Hollimon’s grandmother marched him into the Boys & Girls Club several years ago, neither of them could imagine it would lead to a face-toface meeting with the President of the United States. “I was only 11, but my grandmother was tired of me getting in trouble,” said Ahkeem. “I thought I was being punished, but it turned out to be the luckiest day of my life.”

Thanks in part to United Way funded programs offered through the Tupperware Brands Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida in Kissimmee, Ahkeem found the support he needed to overcome many obstacles, including the violent death of his brother.

“At 15, I had to step up and become the big brother of the family,” he said. “When I saw my mother’s pain, I knew it was time to become a young man. We all have choices. I knew I had to make the right ones.”

Among them was his decision to graduate from Osceola International High School and attend Valencia Community College to study business and engineering. To give back, he also worked at his former Boys & Girls Club where he helped mentor a new generation of kids.

In recognition, Ahkeem was named 2011 Southeast Region Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America – an honor that led to a trip to Washington, D.C., and an Oval Office meeting with President Barack Obama, who offered some solid advice. “He told me to never give up on my dreams and always strive for excellence. To that, I would add one 29 more thing – never forget where you came from.”

Miguel and Sabrina: Moving Ahead with Help from United Way Miguel and Sabrina† are a young Orlando couple whose three children, ages 8, 6 and 5, are the center of their lives. More than anything, they want to provide a safe, stable home that will enable their kids to grow up strong and healthy.

But when Miguel lost his job during the economic crisis and couldn’t find another, things began to unravel. Unable to get by on Sabrina’s income alone, the family was about to be evicted with nowhere to go when they called United Way 2-1-1.

In addition to receiving temporary rent and utility assistance, Miguel found help in searching for a new job. They also learned how to create a workable budget, reduce debt and put a little money away each month.

With Miguel’s new job and their savings, the family moved into a better home in a safer neighborhood that the kids love.

Sabrina, who is working and going to college, couldn’t be happier.

“When Miguel lost his job, it was overwhelming,” she said. “Thanks to help from United Way, we got through the crisis and are moving forward again.” † Names and photo have been changed to protect the clients’ identity.
